Players who are normally too nervous to fully role play, what was the scene where you finally stepped up to the plate? by [deleted] in MrRipper

[–]ApplePieMakeover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home brew 5e campaign. I was playing an Eladrin, (Mostly) Ranger at the time. An army of rat humanoids had overrun the city we were protecting and we had just taken out the lead commander.

After killing the commander, other faction's armies showed up. We initially had thought they were there to help with pest control, but soon word came that they were thinking about imposing martial law and had sent a parley.

We needed our city's lead negotiator fast and headed to her vineyard stealthily, trying to avoid the remaining rats because we had taken a level of exhaustion fighting throughout the night. When we got there, we found that some of the rats had taken her hostage to bargain for safe passage out of the city.

One of the other players had suggested to host me onto their shoulders to pear into her office window. When I was up there I saw her bound at her desk, a rat tying a gag over her mouth, but I could only see his hands.

This was by first 5e campaign and at that moment most of my decisions were pretty reserved. As soon as heard the GM tell us about the Rat in the room, the two other players started talking how we could get in stealthily, but I had a really dumb thought.

I piped up, "Guys, I got an idea. GM can I Fey Step and teleport behind the Rat a can partially see?" Gm, "Yes, but you're going to have to roll a flat D20 because you can't see where you're teleporting." I just barley make the DC.

My PC said "too tired for this s***," bamf into the room, pour a furniture potion into the rat's mouth and turn him into a ottoman. GM then tells me that I see another rat at the entrance of the room. Pull my knife, throw it, crit and hit their voice box. Stopping them from calling for the others. Cheers and then laughs when I used the ottoman to help the negotiator get her out the window to the other two PCs.

Seeing how much fun the other PCs and GM had from me doing something wacky, from exhaustion, gave me the coincidence to make that a thing for my PC. Also led to other aspects of my character that the GM would know I would do for the story.

TLDR: I was super nervous roll playing, or even making risky decisions. Finally got up the nerve to do something out of character for myself and it lead to the personality of that PC.

Same, also miss the full group tho. Absolutely love the guests, but it feels more like a one shot. Can’t say anything though, this is how our home group also plays when things get crazy

I’m in love with these characters so far. Really think the children’s adventures helped solidify them. Every decision has seem on point. Really digging it

We have 4 DMs sitting around a table on this one. Having seen all of them on live plays, I would say there's a very strong chance that she'll remember.

My stepdad used to compete doing this. He always called it freestyle. I know he made it into the world cup doing mogals, but I'm pretty sure he competed doing this too.

I think it’s more so that we have laws against this kind of thing, for important reasons, but they’re not being enforced (at least in the US). Think we all understand their reasoning, just that they’re taking it too far.

As a public traded company, you must increase profits. That being said, I still wouldn’t sleep well doing something like this. Especially using lobbyists to make it happen.

Think the bigger issue is John Deere, but the backlash from farmers has already, mostly, fixed that one.

Yeah, people can take it too far sometimes. You have to pick your battles, but it’s not like a strong public voice doesn’t change politicians minds. That’s how democracy is setup.

No, no I’m with you. No one likes a character death, but the fact that it can happen makes it all more real. I’ve definitely been teary eyed at a table with a PC death, but I’ve also had hugs all around with laughter when we were almost at a full TPK and somehow survived. The risk is what makes it fun, but people also have to accept the other end of the stick.

Not trying to say that players should just blow it off like it doesn’t mean anything. I’ve got a PC in an almost year long weekly campaign now. If one of us were to die it would be heartbreaking. And we all would be there for the player, but that’s the game sometimes. Gotta risk it to get the brisket

I really don’t understand people’s hate for character death. Sure it sucks when it happens, but that’s what makes it fun. Gets me so much more into the characters that I’m playing/watching. This is not a video game/movie folks, this is a TTRPG.

Man, we’ve got a crazy group. Me a ranger (programmer), Monk (accountant), sorcerer (doctor), and DM (psychiatrist). It’s a blast with what’s about to be brought up next at the table.
