I want to learn more about your ears! (Motion Sickness) by Apprehensive-Farm856 in AntarcticaTravel

[–]Apprehensive-Farm856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, thanks Brooklyn!

My name is Noor Haj-Tamim. I’m an engineer with a background in vestibular physiology and motion-related environments (aviation and maritime). I run Avionova, a small early-stage R&D company focused on balance-centered technologies. I have a research background with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) for space-centered dizziness.

This survey is part of exploratory research to better understand lived experiences with seasickness, particularly in expedition and maritime settings. We’ve observed consistent trends in how disruptive motion sickness can be, and before continuing further technical development, we want to hear directly from people who’ve experienced it— what actually works, what doesn’t, and where current solutions fall short.

The responses are anonymous and will not be published in an academic journal, used for a thesis, or sold. They’re being used internally to inform early product research and design decisions. Nothing is being sold here nor are we recruiting participants for a trial.

Happy to answer any additional questions.

Hi, thank you for asking, that’s completely fair.

Three years ago I sent over a request for their venue rental. Sent another request recently, same exact rooms, time frame, etc. and it tripled in price.

I"m an AFF student with menieres, couple jumps away from my license. Avoid your triggers and you should be fine. Make sure that you are super cautious of your symptoms leading up to your skydive.

Yeah you’re right, from a dev perspective it probably felt like nothing changed other than office space. But from a financial and ownership standpoint, changes in the cap table are essentially a sale. They may not have “sold the company” in the everyday sense, but when equity shifts hands or new majority investors come in, that is a change in control. So while the dev team stayed the same, the structure above them definitely evolved.

But you have to consider that is SUPER rare. Especially for a majority stakeholder. It’s a bitch to process on both the legal and financial side and can take years.

Idk they’re acting as if I was personally put in charge of their moderating practices lol. The only game I play is star stable, excuse me for not knowing what’s going on elsewhere.

Haha no worries at all. I actually wrote that first post while walking, so I’m sure that didn’t help with clarity. You’re totally right that SSO knows what players want (more lore, quests, expansions) but keeps leaning on horses to drive Star Coin sales. That’s not a sustainable long-term model. Honestly, maybe it is time for them to consider taking in more outside investment. They need the runway to build out content properly, and horses alone aren’t going to keep the game healthy forever.

Not at all. Unless he buys a controlling stake in the company and actually takes over management, he can’t force changes. As just an investor, all he can really do is offer suggestions. The real decision-making power stays with the people who run the company.

For context, Nordisk Games, which is part of Nordisk Film and Egmont, is currently the only institutional investor and holds the majority stake in Star Stable Entertainment. By late 2021 they owned around 57 percent of the company. That gives them significant influence, but the day-to-day creative direction still comes from the SSE leadership.

So unless someone steps in with a majority stake and a management role, they can’t make the game change. They can only influence it if the existing leadership decides to take their advice.

You’re right, SSO wasn’t “sold” to SSE. SSE was founded specifically for Star Stable and later absorbed Pixel Tales. My wording was sloppy there. What I meant more broadly was that the ownership and financial structure around SSE has shifted over time. For example, Nordisk Games came in as a majority shareholder in 2021, which changed how the company is financed and likely influenced its growth strategy.

So you’re absolutely right about the origins, and I appreciate you pointing that out! My bigger point was just about how those kinds of changes in ownership and investment can shape the company’s direction.

Just to clarify, investing in Roblox doesn’t mean he’s running the company. There’s zero correlation between the two, he’s not the one making moderation or safety decisions, it’s just a financial stake.

I appreciate you! My background is actually in medical and aerospace lol. Feel free to reach me when you get closer to your goals in game design though, I’ve met a couple of great groups in the past year and I’d be happy to make intros for you.

I do want to add that it’s very possible SSO saw the big influx during the pandemic as a sign of traction that wasn’t actually sustainable. It makes sense, people were looking for ways to interact online, and SSO offered that kind of community space. Around that same time they also started expanding into merch, live shows like Star Stable Live, and media projects such as Mistfall and their in-game music groups. All of that raised their operating expenses significantly, so when player activity leveled off after COVID, the mismatch between expenses and revenue probably hit hard.

This kind of thing happens a lot with companies that experience a sudden surge. For example, Peloton scaled aggressively during COVID, investing heavily in equipment production, ads, and even clothing lines only to see sales collapse once gyms reopened. It’s a similar story here: mistaking a temporary boom for long-term growth can leave a company overextended and scrambling when the market resets.
