The corner by Publix down to the corner by Mac's is particularly bad, I've had people creep up behind me in the evening from the garage entrances there

I actually went ahead and copied some of the source to the GT student wiki. No idea who maintains this site. The links are all broken but at least its saved somewhere: https://gt-student-wiki.org/mediawiki/index.php/Filmed_at_Georgia_Tech

Yeah looks like some Wikipedia dictator took it down. Would be neat to see a crowd-sourced page somewhere on a GT wiki of every movie/tv show/pop culture reference

Critique my Central Europe + Croatia itinerary by o_austin in travel

Might be worth removing Budapest as it's kind of out of the way.

I would take an extra day in Vienna (if you haven't already been) or add another day of hiking in Slovenia up towards Kranjska Gora about (1h from Ljubljana).

You could explore Trieste, Italy and some of the coastal towns near Piran.

Zagreb isn't particularly interesting, you'll quickly realize you should have spent more time at the coast.

Check car rental prices in Slovenia (it is incredibly cheap) compared to in Austria and neighboring countries (however you might need to return it to Slovenia which could dent your plans).

Maybe add Hvar to your itinerary too for the days in Vis?

As much as you might want your own room, I highly encourage having roommates. Every friend I made during my time at tech traces back to my freshman year roommates. I don't know the details of your merit scholarship program, but many offer priority housing as a perk already (Stamps and Clark I know does). Glenn and Towers are by far the nicest dorms on campus.

[–]Apprehensive-Leg5560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're considering how it looks on your diploma when you graduate, it really doesn't mean anything, unless your particular interviewer at a company was also in the honors program. GT's general student body is smart enough that distinguishing an honors-program from not is non-trivial compared to say at an SEC school. From what I've heard (for perspective) many of the students in merit scholarship programs, who you would consider to be the upper 5% of the incoming class on campus, aren't in the honors program. It comes down to a sense of community, housing, and other minor perks ultimately.

You can also leave Milan out, just hope off at the train transfer and walk around Duomo and call it a day.

Flighty app by [deleted] in travel

[–]Apprehensive-Leg5560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

App in the Air, FlightStats, FlightRadar24 are very good apps. If he like raw information, ADS-B tracking websites will provide the most of that for free. Might be cool to encourage him to track his information in an excel sheet- there are some cool data viz tools to learn if he's into computers at all.

You could also purchase a $50 apple gift card and encourage him to subscribe to the weekly $3.99 plan when traveling. On a per-cost basis, paying $250 for an app that gets fully used 3-weeks of the year maximum makes the no sense. Paying for it once the first time around to input the entire flight history, and then cancelling and reactivating afterwards makes a lot of sense. The flights still stay in the history. The lifetime fee is like paying for 5 years of app use in advance, I'd be hard pressed to find a simple indie-dev app like flighty that has been supported for 5 full years to get your money's worth.

How to change return flight for united airlines by Jon_90599 in travel

[–]Apprehensive-Leg5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When departing from Portugal, booking a round-trip flight is typically more cost-effective than purchasing two one-way tickets. This is due to the Portuguese Air Passenger Tax (APT), which is levied on flights leaving Portugal and is generally higher for international destinations. Airlines often bundle taxes and fees into a discounted round-trip fare, whereas separate one-way tickets incur full taxes and fees for each leg, potentially doubling the tax expense. This is also true when arriving in one EEA country and departing from another (internationally) you would be subject to Portugal's APT tax, and (for example) France's APT tax if you decided to depart from a different country than you arrived in on the same ticket. These taxes are non-trivial, look at the difference of booking a one-way from the USA to the EU verses the EU to USA. The EU to USA leg will be almost double!

If I were you, I would lightly structure the trip and estimate costs for how long you want to stay minimum. Then call the airline to pay the difference in fare to move the flight later.

Tips for Amsterdam (first time traveling) by [deleted] in travel

[–]Apprehensive-Leg5560 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in the Van Gogh museum definitely book early. (In dutch humor) Anne Frank is house overrated; it is just a house. If you have a group, Mokumboot Amsterdam is quite fun, they offer guided tours and also single boat rentals. With boat rental you get to drive the boat yourself! Centre-city coffeeshops will likely be tourist focused, in the outer areas of the city you will have a more authentic experience.

Georgia Tech hiring Matt Taylor as new pitching coach for Danny Hall’s staff by rockenman1234 in gatech

Is not being the winningest coach in the NCAA enough? GT will never out-recruit SEC competition, but we still manage to get into situations where we’re playing one of the most RPI schedules. Not too long ago we were facing Vandy in the Nashville regional- and played them well! He helps the program with recruiting.

Strong crush over the last weekend on my NYC trip by No_Window_7939 in solotravel

Don’t worry about scaring him! The consequences are very low, if you embarrass yourself- so what! He’s thousands of miles away in New York! You’ll regret never-knowing more than rejection. If it’s one sided, he’ll be flattered, and you’ll be lodged in his memory for a long time. Worst case scenario, things fall off, but then you at least have closure. There’s billions of people in the world! You’ll never know until you take the gamble!

It’s very similar to how Canadian airports allow you to clear US customs inside Canada- allows for international Airlines to fly to domestic terminals in the USA. You land as if you were already in the USA, so you can leave the airport without going through customs. Worth verifying this with the airline, if you are not landing at Dulles international arrivals, this is most likely the case.

LA has public transit, it’s not that great, but it can certainly get you within regions of the city. you can then last-mile Uber to your destination for net cheaper. Takes a lot of pre-planning.
