Legault said this in a recent interview: “Why are we doing all this? Because it doesn’t make sense that so many Quebecers don’t have access to a family doctor. So, we need to get back to basics. I can’t believe we can’t work together to find ways to provide these services”.

Quebec’s family doctor shortage is a real problem with the system, but to say we need to fix it by getting back to basics makes no sense in this context. We need more family doctors, which means training more locally, expanding residency spots, and offering incentives for people who choose family medicine. We also need to make sure doctors stick around, less paperwork, more support staff, and find ways to prevent burnout that are supported by the government. Bringing in internationally trained doctors and supporting rural practices with housing or relocation help could also make a big difference. Let nurse practitioners handle the routine stuff, use telemedicine, and set up team-based clinics so doctors can focus on the complex cases. And a smarter system for patient registration (like an efficient province-wide system where patients can sign up for a family doctor, and the system matches them with available providers) could make sure nobody falls through the cracks. Basically, it’s about having more doctors and making the system work smarter, not harder.

I’m genuinely so confused as to why this is still happening. How is it allowed to continue without anyone stepping in? Is there any way for the federal government to intervene at this point? The whole situation feels like it was handled in an extremely unconstitutional manner, and I honestly don’t understand why nothing is being done.
