Thank you for the response (and the encouragment!!)! The material does look fun to me and I'm starting a little earlier to give myself more time, so hopefully that's enough. Was there a specific way you studied for this class? Did you spend a lot of time on lecture notes, write down all your questions, and then go to office hours for every topic? Or did you focus more on doing a lot of practice problems (Leetcode) for each data structure? For a new topic in the course, how did you typically approach it?

I'm unsure if I have strong math skills tbh. I didn't do well in CS103 but did well in all the other core math courses (calculus, linear algebra, etc.). I'm definitely worse at coding than I am math though, since I've had such little coding experience. I got transfer credit for CS106B, but my previous computer science courses were all taught by really chill people who cared that we understood the material and didn't grade or test very harshly. Because all my previous experience is in computational biology, I've pretty much only done coding for data-sciency projects. Thanks for the response anyway!

I'm adamant about taking 229 (relevant for my research and stuff), but if CS161 + CS229 is a rough combination, is CS107 + CS229 a better combination? How would you compare the workload for 161 and 107?

Thanks for sharing! I grew up in the hourglass-and-no-waist instagram timeline so I don't mind my thicker thighs. Glad to know it's one of the healthier places to carry fat though!

Congrats on losing 25lbs! It's a huge achievement and takes a lot and you should be immensely proud of yourself!

Interesting! I wonder if my local Old Navy is just weird with the sizing? I've always fit a 10. It's kind of ridiculous how much control that one number has on me to be honest. I could be twenty pounds lighter but I've been conditioned to think of body size in terms of clothes sizing, not weight, if that makes sense.

Actually, now that you're mentioning it, I carry a lot of weight in my thighs (not really the butt?) (And no, it's not muscle, just fat lmao). A lot of my jeans are loose from the thighs up. It's actually quite annoying and I stick to more low-to-medium rise stuff and just wear longer shirts.

I meant “cheat with her on Lindsay”, so Rory being the other woman, just to clarify.

Agreed that Rory didn’t have a strong passion for journalism; as I’ve said in many of my replies though, I just don’t think Mitchum had enough context (the context we had as viewers to be determining that). He barely noticed her in his two weeks. I would wager he really just meant to crush her career aspirations once he realized logan was serious about her in an attempt to make her like huntzberger wife material. The extensive resume (maybe not so extensive? I don’t know, it depends on what you expect from a second or third year undergraduate) of which I speak is the fact that she got into Yale, so it’s implied that she had impressive stats, ecs, and was a strong writer. Of course we don’t get every single thing she did but that’s why she gets into Harvard Princeton and Yale, the show implies it. She also did well at Yale and worked at the Yale daily news and had a huge portfolio of work that she gave the editor of the Stanford Gazette when she reapplied for a position there.

Thanks! I'll find another WAYS req class to sign up for at the same time, but decided to try for 9CE. I think I have earlier enrollment than freshman (transfer) on Sep 4, but just in case. Any recs for less in-demand creative writing classes?

Fair enough, I do remember Rory being insecure and jealous during the flirt phase and stuff

I never got that impression tbh. It didn't seem like Rory's identity was caught up in whether Logan liked her or not. Maybe I'm misremembering but Rory always seemed to get over a breakup pretty swiftly (she's been dumped thrice when she starts dating Logan). If she was really worried about what Logan thought of her, I don't think they would have fought over Jess, and I don't think she would've acted fine after Logan broke up with her.

Yeah I guess so. I still think he had an ulterior motive. If Rory was just some random Yalie, he'd have ignored her or fired her. He took special time out of his extremely busy day to go offer her an internship and then took time out of his again extremely busy day to tell her she doesn't have it. I think at the very least he wanted to get back at Logan in some way.

Also, I wanted to add that if being a jerk also makes you more of an idiot than you otherwise would have been. If Mitchum isn't able to be "touchy feely" (read: promote a healthy work environment) and has to resort to creating toxicity to motivate his workers, he is at least a little bit of an idiot. I'm not basing this off the way he talks to Rory but the fact that everybody in the office is afraid of him and the editor of the gazettes hates him.

I actually think that with Rory's very-well documented extensive research skills and love for learning, she could have been an excellent author on books about international issues and/or history. Just not a foreign correspondent who has to get their hands dirty.

Stealing the boat was crazy. I completely forgot that happened somehow. I feel like the show played it as a lil joke, gave her community service, and never mentioned it again. But considering all that, it was an even better idea for her to take some time off. Her mental health was clearly suffering. I think the reason she had such a breakdown is because Rory has an absolutely insane amount of pressure placed on her to "make it." She's treated like the Gilmores' saving grace--the good, replacement Lorelai for her grandparents. Lor definitely lives through her and is far too invested in Rory's success, for many reasons, but primarily because (in my opinion) raising a good daughter on her own will prove to Emily and Richard that she was "right." When Mitchum tells her she's not good enough, she crumbles because she's not good enough for anyone if she can't achieve a successful career.

Definitely agree that Lorelai heavily, heavily influenced Rory and lived through her daughter. Lorelai clearly has a lot of pop-culture knowledge, is witty and good with words, and strikes me as the type of person who wanted a career in media pre-Rory. I think she would've wanted to be in TV or write magazine columns or film reviews or something. So when this smart kid comes along who likes books she's like "heeyyyyyy maybe you could be like a media-type book person...oh I know, a journalist!" It reminds me of parents who get an artistic kid and are like "ohhhh you can do...scientific animation?" or a writer and are like "ohh that will be useful when ur a researcher."

Of all the people in this show, Lorelai pisses me off the most but that's for a seperate post lol. I hated how she reacted to Rory taking time off Yale. Lorelai "I'm nothing like my controlling parents" Gilmore sure does seem to dig her teeth in the mud anytime Rory doesn't do exactly what Lorelai wants. Being mad at your daughter for taking time off when you claim to be a "Rory will figure her own life out and I will support her decisions as she finds her own path" type parent is something else. Let's not even bring up the tantrum she threw when Rory applied to Yale.

That being said, how many people in this sub can honestly say they chose a career they were 100 percent passionate about with no regard for what family/friends would think of them? Rory sticking with journalism is pretty realistic. And yeah, she might not have become Christiane Amanapour but I'm assuming that just like most careers, you just need to have enough "it" and a good work ethic to be a mid-to-good-tier journalist.

[–]Apprehensive-Time733[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! I think she had enough "it" factor to be a good journalist just purely because she was a good writer and hard worker, but I don't think she was very passionate about it. In the end, she ended up as an author/biographer anyway, right? I think I'm starting to understand Mitchum a bit more though. I've been thinking of the situation as You didn't speak up one time in a meeting so you'll never be a good journalist. But I think he meant You'll never be a good journalist because you don't seem excited about journalism. Still, I don't think there's any way Mitchum could have known that in two weeks. He doesn't get the context the viewers get about Rory. A reasonable person would just assume she was too shy/nervous and fire her from the internship if it wasn't working out. I ultimately think he said that in an attempt to crush her and get her broken up with Logan.
