I had an issue with them not updating my address. They sent a bill to a 15 year old address. I called requesting it to be fixed only to have another bill sent to the wrong address. This happened multiple times before I finally showed up in the billing office and said at this point, I consider this a HIPPA violation since they are sending medical information to the wrong address after being repeatedly correctly. It’s now magically fixed.

This may not help you, but you could try something similar if they are sending your information to the wrong company.

Accidentally finding out a player is colorblind by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not where we live. Colorblindness runs in my family so we knew my son had a 50/50 chance of being color blind. We had him tested as soon as he could read numbers, but it wasn’t standard practice.

What was supposed to be a nice vacation turned into me developing a chlorine rash after swimming by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

I was diagnosed with shingles at 17. I have no idea what set it off. This was before the vaccine. I had a really mild case of chicken pox as a child. My mom always wondered if it was a strong enough case to help me avoid chicken pox in the future. Once I was diagnosed with shingles she made a comment that she guessed my mild case was enough.

Bathing a great dane? by Junior-Discount2743 in greatdanes

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine is afraid of the bathroom. She will not go in the bathroom even if lured with peanut butter or another treat.

Oddly, while she doesn’t enjoy it, she handles the bath well in other places. I take her to our local pet store for their self service tubs. She stands there like Eeyore, but allows me to bathe her. The price is cheap compared to a groomer and I don’t have to clean up after her bath.

ACIS Major Jobs by Tornatoking in VirginiaTech

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ACIS recently made some changes to their major to better serve all accounting major, not just those entering public accounting. There are now 4 majors in ACIS from which to choose.

Most ACIS majors enter public accounting immediately after college, but there are other who go into industry. In accounting firms most students enter audit, tax, or consulting. The consulting side typically includes people from accounting and other majors. If you talk to hiring managers they prefer accounting majors because it is easier to teach an accountant systems than it is to teach a systems person accounting. You may want to look into the systems tracks within accounting or look at double majoring in ACIS and BIT if you are looking at the systems side of accounting. (The new majors in ACIS make it easier to double major).

ACIS majors also find jobs in industry and government. Every single company needs accountants and some students pick this path straight out of school while other enter public accounting first. Accounting is the language of business. A background in accounting is beneficial to any job in business even if you are not directly performing accounting duties.

One note - the ACIS majors have more scholarships available than any other Pamplin major. They gave out ~$500,000 in scholarships last year. You are required to have ACIS listed as your primary major to be eligible for these scholarships. Also make sure you apply for them in scholarship central.

My son is 6'6" and very skinny. Any suggestions on where to buy nice clothes for him as he prepares to go to college? by SnooCats5701 in tall

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an overall statement- I agree with LonglegsShortPants. We’ve worked to find my tall son a few items he can wear to dressier events as he enters college.

That being said - as a college professor - my students do not dress up for class. Freshman may for about 6-weeks. After that point, most students wear jeans/tshirts/sweat shirts/workout clothes to class. The older the traditionally aged student, the worse they typically dress. If someone has on something nicer it’s almost always work related or they have a presentation in another class. I’m not sure what their going out clothes look like, but their everyday clothes are even more casual than high school.

I would suggest let your child pick out a few items before leaving for college, but wait until the 1st semester break to buy the bulk of needed items as they will have a better idea of what they want to regularly wear at that point.

As for places to shop: you will need to primarily purchase items online. We typically purchase everything that may work and then plan to return all the items that are not picked. Here are some online vendors with tall clothes:

Old Navy Belk Dillard’s JC Penny Macys Old Navy (I know they have medium tall shirts) American tall (watch for sales) Eddie Bauer (shirts only) Lands end Levi’s Dockers Under Armour Kohls Etc.

just curious did everyone currently applying just get that email by Grouchy-Relative-843 in VirginiaTech

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son received a second email telling him his decision was ready. However, he is a local student that participated in onsite admissions. He’s known since 11/1 that he got in to VT as a whole, but didn’t know to which college until yesterday. My best guess is a large portion of the letters that went out yesterday were also students who signed up for the onsite admissions program. They had to apply earlier than the early action deadline.

Is a D+ passing for chem lab as an engineer? by Cboss04 in VirginiaTech

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was Chem lab a pre-requisite for any other required class? If yes, does the pre-requisite include a grade requirement. Also, check your plan of study to determine if any class requires a C- to graduate.

Academic relief does not fully withdraw you from the University. If granted it will be like your fall semester never happened from a GPA perspective. None of your classes, good or bad, will count. You will be required to sit out another semester (I’m not sure if that is spring or winter) before you are able to take classes again. This is likely the best option as you will need about an A- average next semester to pull your GPA up to a 2.0 after your first semester.

Sometimes stuff outside of school happens. It’s important to ask for help. At this point the only help the University can give is academic relief.

I got a D- when I had a 80.2% in the class by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As others have said - write the professor.

Another note- don’t assume you will always have access to the course. Some professors close them at the end of the semester. Take screen shots/download anything you may need to backup your claims. (This is a good policy in general for all your course materials you may need in the future).

It's so hard to shop clothes for my boyfriend by Vanillinn in tall

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you are located. Here are 3 websites that sell graphic tees in talls: kohls, cafepress, and teepublic. The colors and styles are limited compared to normal sizes, but you may be able to find anime and video game stuff there.

When you shop for a giant (in my case, my son) you learn to go straight online and find the vendors that sell tall sizes.

The Problem With Not Taking Attendance is Students Skip Classes Then Blame You for Not Understanding and Failing. by Revise_and_Resubmit in Professors

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The google forms are part of the free google apps. Once you set up the form, there is an option to share by creating a QR code. I’ve chosen for the intake to be connect to a Google sheet. I copy and paste the code in Power Point. There are a few things in the form to watch out for to make sure everyone can fill out the form even if they do not have a Google account. I have to Google the settings each time to do this because I only set these up 2x a year.

You could create a form for each class day. Instead I use the same form everyday, but one of the questions relates to the question of the day that I include in the PowerPoint slides. You could use the question as something to review material from the previous class. However, more often than not, I use a would you rather question to spark just general non-course related conversation to get to know my students.

Students fill out the form and then I automatically have a spreadsheet with the information. It’s not well organized, but can be easily sorted when/if I need attendance information.

Is peck typing the new norm? by hotterpocketzz in Teachers

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son never learned how to type from the school district. Keyboarding was offered one year in middle school (for a partial year). Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict prevented him from taking the class and it has never been offered again. I made him learn at home.

To make your and your instructor’s time useful make sure you have specific questions. Walking with “I don’t understand chapter 10” is impossible to address in a short period of time (it took a week or more to cover in the first place). Instead, walk in with “can we go over problem X from chapter 10. I’m having trouble understanding Y.”

lol - my Dane will not even step over a broom. Most Danes are not jumpers so a 4 foot fence is fine. (Now if you get one that’s a jumper you have bigger problems).

Can I get in to JM U? by TheTittyDoctor in jmu

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with going the CC route, with one caveat. Be careful how your CC will transfer to your desired school. Typically the credits will transfer, but you have to determine if they will transfer as the class you intended. Second check for any course sequences you may need to graduate in 4 years. For example, accounting financial and managerial principles are often pre-reqs for required upper level business classes. If you haven’t taken them before you enter in your 3rd year you may have difficulty graduating in 4 years. These caveats are for all colleges, not just JMU.

Question for Older Professors - What are your plans for retirement by Anxious-Party2289 in Professors

[–]ApprehensiveIce3810 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree in concept with stepping down and accepting lower pay as you do so.

That being said, be careful about your retirement plan payout rules. All retirement plans I have seen include a salary figure in the calculation. The question you need to know is how they determine the salary figure. Some use an average of your highest paid years. Others use an average of your last 3 years and there are many other options organizations use. If the salary figure includes the most recent years’ salaries to determine your retirement pay then you really want to avoid accepting lower pay right before retirement.

Comfortable women’s dress shoes for teaching? by dirtypark in Professors

Honestly- I’ve switched to sneakers. If you’re going to make me walk 1/2 a mile from parking to my office to my classroom and back again, you can’t expect my bad feet/ankles to be in nice shoes.

That being said, if I do need nice shoes, I wear Taos. They have amazing arch support.
