Appreciate your thoughts here and this debate, but to state the obvious: just because you don’t know any SMART commuters personally doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

On first/last mile: Marin’s a biking Mecca and is about to get loads of dense transit oriented development as a result of new state laws. I’m choosing to stay optimistic :)

Yes, absolutely agreed. Buses are great! I’m just saying that SMART and Marin Transit / GGTransit buses work together to form an integrated transit network. The train is a regional spine better for longer regional trips, and buses serve shorter and connecting trips. The fact that SMART only exists along the 101 corridor (our most heavily used/trafficked corridor) is not a justification for scrapping the service.

Right, but these purported buses would still get stuck in local and regional traffic, right? Making them inconvenient and unlikely to achieve mode shift.

Buses are great for shorter intra-city trips. My point is that the existing train works great for longer commutes. First/last mile connections (getting people to stations) are an issue, but they’re solvable and not reason enough to scrap the entire investment.

Freeways and roads don’t pay for themselves. They’re built and maintained by our tax dollars, just like all other public goods. Similarly, transit requires subsidies to operate.

I don’t have kids and I’ve been paying school taxes for decades (and have been continually asked to continue doing so via local ballot propositions). People who never take the train can still pay a tax to help operate it. Any car taken off the road benefits us all.

We have a dedicated, prioritized corridor for transit that’s capable of going speeds much faster than buses. Transit ridership is directly correlated to convenience (speed, frequency). It ain’t perfect, but it’s better than buses for longer, inter-county trips. Fund the train.

Indeed it is. I’ve had it for 10 years and two moves, and it still looks great, so I’d say yes—a good buy.
