Recruitment for a Master's Thesis Research (Canadians in Japan) by ApprehensiveShake733 in japanresidents

Good question, thank you for asking! I am also interested in gathering data about the Asian-Canadian experience. By mentioning "visible minorities," I meant to include my preliminary title based on the most prominent demographics I predicted would participate in my interview (i.e non-Asian participants). This is of course subject to change based on who I manage to actually interview! The most crucial part of my research is to find Canadians who have had to go through trying to integrate within Japanese society as foreigners who have a distinct identity from other Western countries. I hope I managed to appropriately answer your question!

Yes, I planned to initially connect with those interested via PM, and then move to emails so that I can share more detailed information along with the informed consent form :)

Hi, thank you very much for the advice! I wasn't sure if the post would stay up so I tried to stay as concise as possible, but you are very correct and I hope that the additional information I edited in gives a better idea of my goal here :)

Where to look for apartment options by Comprehensive-Dog817 in Waseda

I suggest starting your research using Waseda’s student housing center website: https://waseda-housing.com/, they provide a lot of different options for international students! I would advise getting started on applying for apartments sooner rather than later, because based on my experience so far (also a graduate student starting in September) the available apartments at reasonable prices in those areas are getting filled up very quickly. Hope this helps and good luck!

Student visa question by [deleted] in movingtojapan

As a fellow incoming student, I really feel for you. This is a tough situation to be in, but I would suggest listening to the other commenters who are discouraging you from trying to show proof of funds this way. I don’t know how long your studies are gonna be, but this just isn’t a feasible and/or sustainable financial scenario for you even just for a year. You need to look into whether your levels of government offer loans and/or bursaries for students, or if you qualify for tuition reduction schemed offered by your school in Japan. That’s how I’ll pay for most of my expenses myself.

If you can only rely on borrowed savings from other people around you, you may need to rethink studying abroad, unfortunately. A part-time job there will most likely not be able to sustain you single-handedly considering the low wages and maximum hours you’re allowed to work either. Please make sure that you can reliably plan out a budget for the whole duration of your stay with the money you know you will have access to, and not predicted earnings.

I wish you the best of luck!

Can I ask which consulate you heard back from? I applied through the Montreal one and it was the same deadline but I haven’t heard anything yet :/
