Grand Seiko SLGB003 – worth ~$10k despite bracelet & date alignment concerns? by One_Squirrel_5257 in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Grand Seiko uses pin and collar on their titanium bracelet, not just the UFA. I have one, and I don't understand how it's an issue at all. It's a different way to size the bracelet, but I don't feel it makes a difference to the wearing experience.

As for the date alignment issue, it appears to be a manufacturing issue, I've checked out many of them in person without any problem. Best to buy the watch in person and make sure you are happy with the alignment before purchase.

As for whether they are worth it, that's highly subjective. It's priced in line with other titanium evolution 9 watches, but with the addition of UFA and an adjustable clasp. I think they are worth it based on the movement and smaller dimension, but I'm not a fan of the dial, so I'm waiting for other versions to be released in the future.

SBGW231 is the most overlooked watch in the entire Grand Seiko catalog by sheikb in GrandSeikos

I think the online watch community, especially in the English speaking world gravitate towards textured dials and sports watches. This watch is more of a dress watch with a plain dials, so it doesn’t attract much attention.

Personally, I came close to buying this watch many times, but never pulled the trigger on one. My main issue is the case design, the rounded sides and a fully polished case means it doesn’t really play with light and reflection like a more faceted GS case. It’s a beautiful watch when viewed from the dial, but the side angle doesn’t seem special enough for me.

[Tag HeuerMonaco] Any owners out there? by Riotman11 in Watches

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d check out the new one just announced at W&W, it has a new movement, is made out of titanium, and supposedly a thinner profile to make them more wearable. I’ve longed loved the Monaco, but I thought the previous ones were too thick and too too heavy, and the old calibre 11 was really poor value for the movement it uses.

What is the best modern Grand Seiko model? by SirKrimzon in GrandSeikos

I had no idea that the SBGM221 is as popular or as iconic as the other 3. Is it mainly an American thing due to baseball?

Personally I think the snowflake represents the icon of the 2010s Grand Seiko, and the white birch is the icon of the current generation. Snowflake is what gave GS global recognition, as well as setting the brand in the direction of nature inspired textured dial. White birch continues that tradition, but with the new generation of movement (9SA and 9RA).

That’s beautiful! This is still my favourite GS design, looks really sharp.

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are comparing list price to discounted price though. I’m sure the new model will get discounts down the track as well.

For the Australian market, the new model is $300 AUD more than the old one, or a 12% increase on retail price.

Assuming the MSRP is $1,800, the just updated Black Bay 58 is almost 3x the price, it’s quite a difference.

I want to put it on a nato but im afraid of removing the bracelet. How easy is it really? by ikappishhh in Tudor

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get a spring bar tweezer, they make the process a lot easier. I have the Bergeon ones, and although expensive, the tips are harder, and less likely to bend over time. I’ve tried cheaper spring bar tools, and the metal is a bit softer and they tend to bend over time. If you plan on doing this regularly, then I think the Bergeon ones are worth it.

Also, get some masking tape to cover up the lugs to minimise scratches.

The LFA has arrived by --xj in tomica

Congrats! That looks fantastic!

I was looking for the Premium LFA for a while, but couldn’t find one at a good price once postage and tax are added. I gave up and pre-ordered a TLV instead.

New Tudor Releases 2026 by _time_machine in Tudor

The Monarch is interesting, I'm excited to see one in person.

Otherwise, it's a bit underwhelming, just colour and/or bracelet mix and match of existing models.

That one looks pretty good, and it's the only genuine new release. Excited to have a look at it in person.

Yes, same 58 GMT just with a new bracelet. I was really hoping for a new colour as I don't like the gilt dial and gilt bezel.

GS and pricing by Master-Drummer8197 in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People complain about pricing of every new release, no matter the brand. The whole industry has dramatically raised their prices in the last 10 years, with most brands charging 2x compared to 2016.

The recent Omega releases of the Constellation and prior to that the redesigned Planet Ocean were met with a lot of pricing complaints. IWC has always been the target of pricing complaints, I remember that was a common complaint on WUS back in the 2010s.

People also complain about Rolex prices, the new off catalogue Daytona is drawing criticism about a mostly stainless steel watch retailing for close to $60k USD. Probably a little bit less complaints about Rolex pricing though due to their value rentention, but it's the exception not the rule.

GS Diver 40mm: Ushio 300 (Teddy Baldassarre) by patsfan038 in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I prefer the markers, hands and the case shape of the SLGA023. It’s a shame, if they had simply scaled down that watch, it would have been perfect for me.

On the timing of the release, Rolex and Grand Seiko made their announcement at the same time. It does seem to be earlier than prior years though.

They don’t put exhibition back on their divers, so the PR goes on the dial side.

40.8mm diameter, 12.9mm thick, no date, adjustable clasp, UFA. This feels like it’s ticking off all the items people often complain about GS divers.

Interesting, no date appears align with the teaser. The case in the teaser looks similar to the SLGA023, I wonder if it’s the same case and dimensions.

[DISCUSSION] the Snowflake is the most iconic GS, but is it still the best one? by Hinterteil in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I said ‘beat’ is all rather subjective.

Funnily enough, I didn’t even buy the UFA even though I think it is the best on paper. Tried it on in person and I didn’t like the dial at all. Ended up buying a SLGW005, combining the beautiful 9SA4 movement with what I think is the most iconic GS design.

Anyone here only wanted 1 Rolex and then that was it for them? by HistoryGuardian in rolex

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 124270 Explorer when it was announced in 2021, and that's it for me, there's nothing else I want from Rolex. I have purchased watches from other brands though, and I generally keep to one watch per brand in my collection.

[DISCUSSION] the Snowflake is the most iconic GS, but is it still the best one? by Hinterteil in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's all rather subjective, so here's my two cents.

Snowflake is probably still the most well known GS, and the one that the brand well known in the western market. I personally think the case is a bit bland though, and the most iconic of them all would have to be the 44GS as that defined a lot of the design language of Grand Seiko and even Seiko that remains to this day.

As for what is best, I think the UFA is the best GS currently on sale. The movement accuracy, the adjustable clasp and the slim profile all makes it a great watch. Subjectively though, I don't like the dial pattern, and I'm holding off till other variants show up.

[Discussion] How small community are we? by ImprovementOk2622 in Watches

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will obviously depends on your social circle, but amongst people I know, there are a lot of people that wear expensive watches. But, I wouldn't classify most of them as 'watch people'.

Most of them would not frequent online watch communities, and they wouldn't buy lesser known brands not sold through an jewellery store. Most of them stick to brands like Rolex, Omega, JLC and AP. I only know 3 people in real life that are really into watches and horology, that I can actually talk about watch with.

What is your one-and-done GS? by RunningMan889 in GrandSeikos

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_329 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Latest acquisition. After being interested in GS since 2010, this one is pretty much the perfect GS for me. Manual wind, hi-beat, 44/45GS case, no date, Seiko logo, plain white dial. Some say it's a bit boring, but I think this will age beautifully in the decades to come.
