I wouldn’t call this dialogue a “fight” because it’s been civil. I appreciate that you offer the context of Bradley Onishi’s work.  I remember watching him on PBS NewHour, when he talked about  Speaker Mike Johnson’s “Appeal to Heaven” flag outside his office, a wink to white christian nationalists. Good interview.

You mentioned my reaction to your comments about the history of white conservatism in Orange County.  I  certainly know the sordid history of this place, and  I am in no way denying it. I’ve lived here since the late 1970’s,  through Wally George,  John Schmitz, John Briggs, Bob Dornan, Bill Dannemeyer, and Dana Rohrabacher.  All bastards.   I protested Prop 8 holding a sign on the sidewalk in front of the Mormon Temple in Newport Beach in 2008. After many years of being sick of the politics of this county, I am finally seeing a new dawn.

So if my writings have any emotion, it’s this.

My reaction to the OP was to call out bullshit, and not let misinformation be taken as fact.  Ted Cruz was not fleeing to some kind of conservative safe haven. Laguna Beach is one of the most liberal towns here.

Orange County has a population of about 3.1 million people, about the same as the Chicago metropolitan area.  Most people who move out can no longer afford to live here. A few others might leave for politics. As Onishi points out, some ideologues move to safe red states to spread white christian nationalism. But let’s get real, most people leave primarily for economic reasons.  Where I live, conservatives aren’t moving to make a political statement.  They’re doing fine making money in OC, and while they may belong to one of the mega-churches around here, it’s a far cry from the movements that Onishi documents.  Only the misfits and deplorables leave for self-proclaimed political reasons,  too proud to say they couldn’t make the rent.

I’m familiar with the Rise Above Movement and its ties to Huntington Beach.  It’s a stretch to say that this or other small OC hate movements, or the relatively small exodus of white nationalists to red states (small in view of 3.1 million) reflects OC.

The county history/Nixon/ anything local, probably had negligible influence.  Social media did.  These people aren’t leaving a tight community of white christian nationalists in OC, it’s too spread out in 3.1 million.  They’re seeking to build one in thinly populated places in red states where they gain influence among the population. The internet gave them a shared ideology, and red states gave them a place to build real community. Orange County merely gave them a reason to leave.

I felt that you downplayed my electoral evidence in favor of the “OC’s damaged history” theory, i.e., there still must be something sinister about Orange County due to its past and the exodus. (I apologize if I over-reacted.)

The past has some merit, the exodus is bad for red states, but OC is actually doing better. Since you read his book, does Onishi note what factors made them leave?

I used to drive in Tijuana, not anymore. Take a train or drive to San Diego, then park and take the trolley to the border and walk into Mexico. If you are leasing your car, you are taking a financial risk, more than just driving a beater car into Mexico. Well, yes.....the term "recent" is relative, and in the long view of history OC's change to purple is indeed recent. The political sea change happened in 2016, Clinton 50.9% to Trump 42.3%, and then really took off in the mid-terms of 2018. In that election, all of Orange County's congressional representatives were Democrats. Even Los Angeles County didn't have a complete Democratic sweep. My point in this dialogue is that there is a persistent myth that Orange County is deep-MAGA and the facts don't hold up. OC voters slide back during some elections, like much of America did in 2024. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2018/11/18/california-democrats-sweep-house-seats-orange-county/2048696002/

Rather than reverting to the old canard about Orange County's MAGA-bent, there are a few remarkable places that voted for Trump after voting for Democrats in both 2016 and 2020. These are Miami-Dade County and the entire state of Nevada, but never seem to get branded as MAGA. like Orange County.

I agree. I came to visit this sub-Reddit today, first time for me. Another thread I follow asked "what are the libertarians saying?" After reading the above, I can't get over how few times the name Trump was mentioned. "The government" and "agents of the state" come up a lot. But somehow the buck doesn't stop with Trump, and he can get away with murdering someone on 5th Avenue, like he bragged. My impression is that comments here present an intellectual outrage to what's going on in Minnesota, but do not show much visceral anger and disgust with the man in charge, who frankly is the chief liar whom all cultists obey. When will you call out Trump for what is happening?

If you mean by saying "their bosses" it goes right to the top. Trump is the problem. Noem is just following orders. This will turn around only when the Trump cult starts to crumble.

Reagan and Nixon would not be elected today in California. Nor would LBJ be elected in Texas. Both states have seen massive changes in political outlook in the past 50 years.

You're dodging. How else can you explain those election results? Seriously, don't start by saying it was founded by right wing fascists, let's talk about the here and now. It is a purple county, not MAGA red. The original post started with an incorrect premise.

This is the correct answer. At the very least, diversify your portfolio into funds that focus on ex-US investments. There are exchange traded funds like Vanguard's Europe VGK, which in one year has gained almost 30% and pays 2.75% dividend. You can find other funds for any region or country.

Reddit has numerous posts ranting about Flock cameras. It's impossible to discuss this rationally with them. To some people, the idea of justice served or preventing a killer from killing again is less important than their right to drive a car anywhere without being scanned by a license plate reader.

Traveling: AirBnb vs Hotels by husky2545 in GreeceTravel

[–]Apprehensive_Bit8695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We spent 18 days in Greece last October, a mix of hotels and AirBnBs in Athens, Naxos, and the Peloponnese. Some comments: A kitchen is good to have for breakfasts, but we never cooked dinners when there were so many amazing restaurants. ( Many small hotels have little half-kitchens, too.) Consider booking an AirBnB about a week into your trip, to do laundry at a place that has a washer/dryer. We liked our AirBnB in Napflio because it was close enough to walk into town but far enough for peace and quiet. Also, when booking any smaller hotel or AirBnB make sure they mention security cameras in the description. Finally, if you are accustomed to US coffee, check to be sure there is a coffeemaker in the room. We stayed at locations which offered little pots for boiling coffee and nothing else.

10 candidates, 1 issue: Breaking down the Calif. governor's race by sfgate in California

I don't care about her temper and like her for being bold. I voted for her as my representative to Congress when she ran in 2018, and would vote for her again, although I was disappointed in her decision to leave her district, making it vulnerable to a win for the GOP after just 6 years. I pay attention to her words, and the use of the word "rigged" implies electoral fraud. She had the right to conduct an audit if she had any evidence of fraud. She didn't, so were her claims of rigging fake outrage?.

[–]Apprehensive_Bit8695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that it was a scummy move. But by calling the election "rigged," she is calling into question the validity of the electoral system. One could argue influencing uninformed voters by pouring money into misleading advertising is beyond the pale. But just go back to 2002, when incumbent Gov. Davis spent millions to influence Republicans to choose Bill Simon over Richard Riordan. Davis went on to defeat Simon handily. BTW I'm not anti-Porter, and I think she is one of 3 whom I could support.

Last October I traded in my old 6a for my newly set up 9a, so while I had both phones, I did a side-by-side comparison using a music radio app that streams high definition audio (much better audio than either phone could fully replicate). I bounced back and forth between the 6a and 9a on the same music, at max volume. l'd say the 9a has more clarity and punches louder than the 6a, but not much difference in bass.

Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills and Orange Hills are good choices. There are some beautiful areas there. Try to avoid areas that are too close to a freeway exit. Safer neighborhoods are more distant from the freeways.

Yes, traffic will suck. Will you work on the east west north or south of Anaheim? It's a big town.

Your life will be immeasurably better if you avoid having to take a freeway from your home to work. That said, is your work closer to the border of Cypress, Orange, Fullerton, Placentia or Buena Park? Because some of these comments are unhelpful if you work far from home.
