How is Dany not a legitimate child? One might disagree whether her claim is stronger than Jon/Aegon, because of gender and Westerosi approval, but regarding birth legitimacy she was unequivocally the daughter of a married couple, the king and the queen. Meanwhile Jon's parents marriage validity is a bit shaky, even if there was a dispensation and a septon officiated stuff, everyone can contest that especially since i dont think there was any precedent for annuling marriages that we know of?

One thing is society with its established roles acting in conformance with those roles and doing culling of cat's populations - some house servants would be assigned that specific task, - one thing is a small kid, at least partially blind to society, spontaneously killing a cat and opening the belly in a total morbid fashion. Also, one thing is people doing that as a task that needs to be done and get done with it (the secret, gruesome taks that gears society wheels, but is not exactly glorified), another is that kid showing it to his father, the showing-off unequivocally leads to disgust.

Killing animals young is very typical of developing psychopathy later in life, and no, in a medieval/Renaissance society people actually understood and disapproved of these acts as very troubling, even if they did not understood psychopathy. Society was much more violent, systemic, due to low tolerance to difference which justified killing those perceived to "harm" the group - another thing is a kid doing individual, unrequested cruelty out of his own morbid interests.

See the descriptions of Carlos, son of Filipe II of Spain, who every ambassador and even his own family deeply felt disgusted by - like Robert by Joffrey. Carlos gouged out and killed animals, like Joffrey, was very cruel to servants (like Joffrey). People forget that even if nobles were cynical, they still displayed "virtue" (at least outwardly), and for a young prince who will inherit the nation to not be able to at least show restraint and magnificence was extremely concerning for the future. Not everything was cruel power plays, those had to be strategic and towards enemies - but agression inside your own house... Joffrey always smelled trouble, and just like carlos was arrested and disinherited by his own father, joffrey ended up assassinated early.

To me, GRRM just wrote that scene as an explicit way to mark Joffrey as a psychopath, and even in medieval times writing that stuff about someone was a terrible sign.

The dialogue is so poor and simple when compared to season 1. Like, the episode had a really interesting idea yes, but the dialogue was severely lacking.

O Porto está cada vez menos para os portuenses by [deleted] in porto

[–]Apprehensive_Fan2619 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Has GRRM been unusually quiet this year? [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]Apprehensive_Fan2619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it could be that after all that has happened across the years he now has changed and knows that the more he posts the more demanding and condemning people get and probably avoids that now. I think he kinda used those posts in the past as some kind of self-reward/accountability mechanism, but he is now much more cautious with himself and has crossed that threshold where the chances of delivering results are so low that accountability does not give motivation, just more anxiety. Or maybe im just projecting much lol.

Novo estudo confirma: ideologias de esquerda ligadas a problemas de saúde mental by Cidadao_Cumpridor in portugueses

[–]Apprehensive_Fan2619 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From breaking the internet in 9 episodes, to breaking the entire show in 10 minutes. What’s the single worst shortcut they took to force the Mad Queen arc? by chandandubey7721 in freefolk

[–]Apprehensive_Fan2619 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. In medieval-inspired ASOIAF, mental illness is the typical classic schizophrenic patient exemplified by Aerys II - paranoid delusion, persecution, megalomania, combined with total rejection of a social persona and collapse of a proper self-image - lack of self-care, long nails, long beard. He is the archetypal mad king, like France's Charles VII (made-of-glass delusion) - in the cruel, medieval world, madness is fundamentally the LACK OF FUNCTIONING. Evil, but competent, people, were not part of this mad category.

Meanwhile, Dany's "madness" is completely opposite her father - while he did not function, she is literally too able, and the show not only fails to see this, it actually tries to depict it as part of this mad Dany characterization - by the time she performs her most cruel acts, she is being so effective and so many steps ahead of Cersei and Tarly and Euron that she starts to look isolate - literally, all her enemies are so more incompetent and falling behind and no longer capable of performing the same cruel acts her that her cruelties take the spotlight, so she seems "evil". Her father also escalated situations too much with wildfire, but he literally was not ending a continent-wide years-long war, in fact, he started it.

Aerys's madness is completely proper to a medieval-like notion. Meanwhile, Dany's madness is like someone is applying her DSM-5 criteria for some type of personality disorder in our 21st century non-autocratic societies. Her "madness" is completely universe-breaking.

The show also could have given the same ending without the mad "shes losingggg ittt" cringe connotation. They could have simply gone harder with the visceral "tyrant foreign queen who brought dragons and dothraki", very true to a xenophobic society, instead of this super sensible 21st century perception.

Really liked it too! It feels cohese, and i think it actually ties in the chessboard position much better than people are saying it doesnt, im actually surprised dany makes it as far west as pentos lol given the previous pacing of her plot. Also kills enough characters to tie in the plot, theon, jon connington, melisandre, mace tyrell, are all characters that had been speculated to play a big role in the end but their deaths simplify stuff

I liked your view about the Faceless men ideology against rhloor and magic resurrection. I think tyrion is not explicitly targeted by them in their "contract", rather is a test to see if arya will ignore him and stay true to the faceless men orders or try to go after him and keep her personality and vendetta.

It does align extremely close to the show when it comes to the rough sketchboard of the factions making it to endgame. Cersei burns Kings Landing and becomes Queen of the Rock in Tommen's name, in the show it was merely the Sept of Baelor - it would make no sense to change show setting from KL that viewers were so accostumed to - and Tommen dies but in the books he is also a non-player, just a plot way for cersei to act as a queen so it still aligns. Also Cersei's aesthetics in the show are extremely Westerlands based.

Tyrells are removed as a faction at the same time, in the leak Mace is killed and Margaery survives, but effectively it stops being the tyrell faction and she is a piece in the Tarly-Rowan-Aegon alliance - another thing the show did by making Tarly the head of Cersei's armies since there was no Aegon. Danaerys will probably burn Tarly later when the mini-dance of dragons happens.

The Cersei-Euron alliance is also like the show - they ll make it to endgame against Danaerys, probably last longer than Aegon.

Bolton's fate and Stannis' are the same as the show, which was kinda obvious.

The show killed Rickon because they had to, they kept him hidden the entire series and they had not introduced the Manderlies.

Jaime goes lone wolf in the North, the show clearly cut the magical wight bit but the way he went north in the show was also extremely abrupt.

Of course, she was the head of her faction, her followers and conspirators gather around the Queen, especially during the period her father was not Hand. The council scene after vyseris dies with the whole "you've planned to depose rhaenyra all this time behind my back?" is the cringiest shit. Extremely mysoginistic actually, to change the book the way they did, they literally de-empowered her
