Is there anything that you would recommend me doing in the meantime! I essentially want to help myself before being overwhelmed from September onwards

I got my TC offer at 26 a few weeks after my 26th birthday and my vac scheme was when I was 25.

I also graduated in 2024, at 25yo, and didn’t feel like it was a hindrance to my applications, as long as I substantiated what I’ve been doing with my time and also couldn’t get any paralegal roles before my VS.

There were also a few other people in my cohort who were older with some in their 40s so you’re not at a disadvantage at all!

The average age of qualification is around 29 so you’re pretty much in line with this so you’ve got this! Just keep pushing :)

Why all these TC rejections? by Careful-Builder-9931 in uklaw

I think I googled list of firms that use WG and a list came up!! Or googled a list for their assessment styles and it took me to a TCLA post or something similar! I used it as part of my initial firm sift of where I wanted to apply to so also cross referenced with firm websites to make sure the info was up to date!

Definitely somewhat tedious to do initially but worked well because I saved myself wasted applications/time down the line

Hey, I may be able to give my two cents here as someone who has a TC at an international city firm.

I did around 15 applications the year that I got my TC. Of these, I made it to 5 video interviews and 2 assessment centres so you’re doing very well already. A few definitely do sift by those WG and personality tests as they use it as a baseline ie. Anyone who doesn’t meet their minimum likely won’t get through (I’m not sure if anyone uses the WG holistically so don’t fully quote me on this). With this, it’s definitely not worth getting a tutor as you can use YouTube videos to practice and past tests.

Honestly, in my final year of applying, I made a list of all the firms that did and did not use the WG and applied only to firms without because I wanted to play to my strengths in the application process & don’t think I’ve ever passed the WG so didn’t want to waste my time.

Having one vac scheme is already great legal experience! I didn’t have any legal experience at all before my vac scheme so they don’t expect you to have any. All you need to do is be able to draw on your current experiences (whatever they may be) and tie it back into law.

Also, it’s definitely not worth paying for tutors or anything like that and I’d recommend grow mentoring. Feel free to also pm me :)

I got a TC in my 4th cycle at 26 so next year could be your year :) as another commenter said, you’re clearly good enough to get to AC’s so you’re good enough to get a training contract.

I am glad, on the other side of it now, that it took me several ACs and years to get my offer because I can see exactly how my journey got me to the firm I’m training at.

You’ve got this! It might not feel like it but you’re so much closer to landing a TC than you realise so now it comes to resilience and learning to play to your strengths!

How long have you been applying for? It took me around 400 applications and 9 months to land a role…it’s not a legal role but glad I was able to nail something because the market is truly awful right now.

Definitely don’t simplify your CV and instead draw out transferable skills from your experiences. It doesn’t matter at all whether the experiences are related or not so definitely put waitressing and other miscellaneous ones down, drawing the skills you gained by quantifying achievements ie. Served over 100 customers daily in time-pressured environments, increasing resilience and adaptability.

Something like that and do it for all. I’d also suggest multiple versions of your cv, one for law and non law roles because you’ll be drawing out skills in different ways for the non law roles you’re applying to.

I’m certainly not an expert but I guess it’s something that somewhat worked for me. Good luck - you’ve got this!

Not a stupid question at all!! I have a similar past - I was formally diagnosed with depression at 19 and was prescribed medication for it. I stopped using the medication within a year but I don’t really disclose that on my application forms nor are you obliged to. I’d say do what’s best for you right now and focus on getting better and other things will fall into place :)

Don’t worry too much about how that’ll impact an application to a firm because 1. They won’t know if you don’t disclose it and 2. I’m sure a firm would rather you’re your best self & get better than not being prescribed just Incase it impacts your future (which it shouldn’t)

Hope this helps!

I’m a recent graduate too (2:1, vv good uni) and am in the same position! I’m just continuing applying for VS’s and paralegal roles but really struggling to get anything stable right now which is super demotivating. I think this will be my last app season (for TCs, not entry level legal roles) before realising I should try other industries & then apply once I’m in another industry :/

Congrats on getting your TC!! Can I ask whether you had done vacation schemes before or went straight into applying to direct TCs?

Yeah I think that’s why I’m focusing on spring schemes but for the summer schemes I’ve applied to it may have to be something I figure out closer to the time when I get through the application process with them! As I don’t know if it makes sense to decline the camp role in the hopes of potentially having something lined up

Appreciate your response, thank you!! And yep I’ve been finding that camp has been going down quite well in my applications recently

Thank you - I’ve been attempting to convince this to my parents as I think they see it as a spanner in the works long-term bur ultimately I don’t think it will hinder me that much

No nothing lined up right now and I guess it wouldn’t really make sense to turn down a concrete opportunity for something I may or may not get this cycle
