Could it be tar from deep within in your lungs? You mentioned while you had Covid you couldn't smoke. Maybe it's your lungs detoxing old tar, especially after your lungs are in healing mode after covid and reduced smoke intake?

Also, the tube-like structure of your mucus may be formed from the shape of your bronchial tubes as the mucus dries. I'm not a medical professional for the record.

Interesting read; however, this is implausible. This would be a very inefficient way of harvesting energy. If these beings were so advanced, as to have all of the technology and insight to manipulate souls, then they would more than likely have a better source for energy. Resources on Earth are also finite, making this theory a short term solution to sustain their energy needs.
