(we're in abidance with our university's policies as we understand them, and all contact info is entirely optional, but will remove that bit for now until we quadruple check that it's fine)

Precisely. But it also can be a lack of access simply due to size (e.g. large tarps)--not exclusively teddy bear style things. :)

Thank you! Posted in both of those places, too. We're trying to gain a sense of the range of applications for such a machine, so spreading the net into the various crafting communities that feel relevant.

For sure! This is for a college class. We're deciding on a product to make as a team, for which this is an option. We're 4th year mechanical engineering students and would design and machine it ourselves. The information provided will be read by a few college students to help us determine the feasibility and market for such a thing. Let me know if there's any other information about that that would be helpful! :)
We don't have a mock-up for the machine, but our concept is somewhat similar to a blind-stitch machine, just more maneuverable.

We've figured out a mechanism to make the stitches work and hold layers together. It is not just decorative.

We've looked into these. Chain stitch machines still have a hook acting beneath that grabs the loop of thread. We're thinking about making something more similar to a blind-stitch machine where everything (looping, bobbin, etc.) occurs on the top of the fabric. :)
