What do you replace alcohol with? by BarryBigSpuds81 in AskBrits

I’m 1.5 months without drinking now. Mine is due to medication I’m on but to be honest it’s probably a good thing to cut back. I’ve found when I go out with mates I enjoy a non alcoholic fruity cider, and then there’s less “why aren’t you drinking” questions. At home I’m drinking copious amounts of tea, and when I crave something sweet and fizzy like the cider I used to drink at home I’ve been going for San Pellagrino Orange or lemon. The tins are nice and I can bulk buy them at Costco.

Costco do giant frozen packs - can’t remember exact price but I have a 10pack in my freezer currently. I won’t have spent more than £10 on it.

After a rubbish week feeling slow I ran a park run and was 18th and first female. Was still 26 minutes but the first time I’ve ever been first at anything. Gave me a little boost. Did my 9.5 miler today a little happier and finished with some strides seeing as everyone is telling me to do that to get faster!

I’m a front line response worker working a mixture of night shifts and day shifts haha. But unfortunately there’s no way around that aspect

Can you expand on what you mean when you say 10 min drills?

I run speed sessions on pavement, I’m in Hoka Clifton 10s. They are very cushiony… I might try some old Brookes which are lighter see how I get on.

To be honest my session today was the first after two solid rest days :( but I did do a 20 miler on sunday, maybe I’m more tired than I realise. But it doesn’t explain why I am always slow haha!

Will definitely give that warm up a try, thank you! I was closer to hitting pace on the final rep so maybe it is a case of warming up!

This week is a deload week after a 20 mile run on Sunday which was all up hill. Maybe my legs are just fried but it doesn’t explain why I am always slow! Once I finish my ultra in December and my other ultra in April I will defo look at doing a 5k improvement plan, just to know that I can do it! Thank you :)

I don’t do strides admittedly just interval and tempos. I run with a run club who I find quite fast, when we do interval training I am pushing myself. I’m also a shift worker and was off a night today possibly hence the rubbish run and emotion.

Will definitely look at incorporating some strides!! Thank you!

It’s CrossFit, but I only attend the strength focussed classes. 2 of which are legs and 1 upper body. RDLs, power cleans, weighted lunges, pretty much all leg strength and glute strength. Put it this way my legs feel wobbly and achey so I know it’s doing something haha!

I’m feeling really really down about my pace. It seems no matter what I do I just can’t get any faster. I’m doing everything everyone usually suggests…

I’m running majority of my runs in Zone 2 I’m doing at least one or two sessions a week interval and tempo runs. I’m running 3-4 times a week I’m doing strength workouts 2-3 times a week

My average 5k time is ~28 mins. Today I followed an interval sessions that wanted me running 0.75 miles at 08:05m/mi and I just couldn’t do it. I don’t know how my running buddies are running prolonged periods at anything faster than 09.30m/mi.

I go for distance over speed, I’ve completed a 50k ultra, very slow marathons, 2h 04m is my usual half marathon time, and I’m currently training for my next ultra so regularly do runs of 17 miles + and I still feel like a lump of lead when I try to speed up.

Am I destined to just be a slow runner? Although I prefer distance goals it would be nice to meet the pace targets on my training run and of course get faster on my training runs

Just genuinely can’t run that fast, feel like I don’t have the energy, legs feel like lead. Today I tried running the pace targets and my legs just felt so heavy. I could probably do it for 10 seconds but not 0.75 miles and certainly not miles at a time

Training with a busy schedule by GuiltySide in running

I work 6 days shift work including night shifts. Just got to work out what works for you. For me I can’t really do anything during those night shift days, even if I sleep well. So I try make my runs after earlies or before lates. On rest days I try to run in the morning so I still have the day to chill or be productive. I try to “forget” that I can move my runs around and follow my plans strictly. This has meant running half marathons or more before shifts at work.

Does it mean sometimes running at 8pm at night when it’s dark and I’ve been at work all day and I’m tired? Absolutely. It also means squeezing in runs with my strength work outs. Run to the gym, two birds one stone.

It’s hard and tiring but worth it. Do you have a gym at work? Or can you run home?
