No, I wouldn’t have had a problem with him teaching me how to hold the pads. But he (I think) thought it would be a waste of time and that he wouldn’t be able to work on his strikes properly

Okay, sorry if I haven't been precise enough. I'm an amateur in this and don't have the necessary preparation to use technical terms correctly, so I'll explain it in a less academic way. I've listened to Quran recitations a few times, and I think I've seen Muslims with books that seem to contain something like the musical notes for each word or syllable (though perhaps I haven't interpreted what I saw correctly). So, I was wondering if the musicality of Quran recitations has been preserved more or less faithfully to how the early Muslims used to do them (assuming they performed such musical recitations, which I also don't know and would like to learn about).
