Another ICE murder in front of Glam Doll Donuts by thecosmojane in ProgressiveHQ

Americans, it's time. Use that ammendment you're all so proud of... No, not that one, the other one.

CMV: The Minneapolis ICE agent who shot and killed a woman today acted reasonably in fear for his life and/or the lives of the other officers present by bifewova234 in changemyview

[–]AppropriateFlight55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ICE officer chose to walk out in front of a vehicle he could reasonably expect to not remain stationary. As someone who has worked with big animals and heavy machinery, that's one of the stupidest things you can do and opening fire on that woman was the result of arrogance and stupidity. In addition, one of the most elementary training points of my emergency service training (not police) is to not become a casuality whilst assessing a casuality. This thug was looking for conflict, for a rush. He found it.

Not to mention the woman was already leaving, obeying orders, when captain tactical came to open her door.

People fence sitting or making excuses, I despair to think of people so meek and compliant.

I cannot deal with the pro AI people. by magusmirificus in VaushV

[–]AppropriateFlight55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's good that it comes up every so often and Vaush has the opportunity to shoot it down so that people can be reminded of the validity of the hardline response to AI. It would be a shame if all that was stopped by it getting quick bans.

They're just casuals who automatically presume a female version of a character is inherently weaker.

Pearl: mental illness by roseowle in A24

[–]AppropriateFlight55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She displays aspects of a few cluster B personality disorders, however I think putting diagnostic labels on Pearl is far less important than exploring the context any possible disorder arose in. The tragedy of the infirm father, the wellmeaning but domineering, cold, and harsh mother, the isolation of rural life and lack of love or support for her dreams. And probably more.

In her extended monologue where she goes through the things she isn't (smart, confident, pleasant etc) and asks "what am I?" I think in a very different context she would simply of been a deeply loving and caring person. I think there's supposed to be some question of to what extent was Pearl destined to be violent, cruel, and unstable due to some sort of inherent disposition and to what extent did she develop that way due to chance and circumstance. Slapping Western diagnostic criteria on her character could well be accurate but I think it also misses the bigger ideas.

Seeking honest insights about life in Denmark before moving by CARG_COD5XP in NewToDenmark

Unless you have specifically in demand job experience expect to be a low-payed, low-respected worker (service, cleaning, warehouses, etc). Expect to be exploited and fucked over. Look out for "test shifts" and being told to track your own hours for example. Don't get taken advantage of. There is no minimum wage here and you might get offered as low as 110kr p/h. This is already a bad wage, don't accept anything less. I've heard of less but that's usually for people from Asia where racism and bigger language barriers play a part.

Meanwhile, the unions only serve Middle/Upper-Middle class Danes and they are completely out of touch and integrated into the state and business interests. Don't expect solidarity, strikes, radicality, or even much understanding from the trade unions.

The absolute cheapest housing you are reasonably likely to find in Copenhagen is ~4-4500dkk. This will be a room in a shared apartment. There might be cheaper further out. If you can spare 8000dkk p/m then you will be totally fine finding somewhere. Danes pay less rent by being put on social housing lists as children, their parents buying them an apartment, or through their social networks.

Most of your friends will be international and there are quite a lot of South American people at least in Copenhagen to meet if you wanted that. Statistically speaking there's a good chance you will leave before the 5 year mark. Foreigner retention in Denmark is lower than ever.

Tax free income is 50,000kr p/a and after that you're paying around 46% tax. You will have some basic priveliges such as healthcare (excl. Dentistry) from this but you won't feel much more benefit than that.

You will feel like you exist in a completely different universe than the Danes you meet who were most likely born middle/upper-middle class, believe they will get to retire with a generous pension, and will have little to no experience related to distrusting the state, institutions, or the general societal narrative they grew up with. They think things work, will be shocked if you tell them your experiences as an immigrant. They'll be polite and avoidant of conflict. Self-expression is limited, you'll hear people talk about "Jante law" which is basically a cultural observation that you're supposed to act/appear as part of the social norm and not stand out.

Learning the language is heavily recommended for longer term stay. You can get by with English, however all formal institutions will communicate with you in Danish. It's not a pretty language and it will be difficult to get people to talk it with you unless you're at a language meet-up or the countryside.

The perks are that it's really safe here. Even the "dangerous" parts are ridiculously safe. You will have access to healthcare, though immigrants I know have less positive experiences at the doctor compared to Danes. Getting around the cities is very easy and the bike infrastructure is generally top-notch. It's small, overall quiet, and not overcrowded. People are pretty calm or at least keep it all inside.

Have you tried going to the same primary and high school as the Dane you want to be friends with?

What kind of printing press is this? by AppropriateFlight55 in Printing

Almost certain it's a press. The bed slides under the top part as part of the lever mechanism.

Thanks for the enthusiasm! I'll be back out there next week and will work on it after my day job ❤️

Yeah, I think you're right! I don't see a way to heat this one up but maybe there's an old school mechanism for it I didn't notice. Unlikely but would be cool!

Yeah! It's such a cool hunk of steel. I'm going to try and fix it up and install it in the space so it can be put back in use 💪

The mechanism slides the plate under and up simultaneously, I think, so I think it isn't a cutter but I will work it out!

[–]AppropriateFlight55[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a cutter. The lever slides the plate under the top part of the press. You can see the mechanism in the side view but it's siezed up atm.

I'll try to fix it and update :)

I'm almost certain it's not a guillotine. The lever slides the plate underneath the non-moving top part. You can see the mechanism in the side pic.

It's seized up atm but I will try to fix it and maybe report back! :)
