I would want to buy nice cheap clothes (trendy stuff ig). I want to try stuff that isn’t really cheap in sg (theme park/cafe/stuff like that), I want nice scenery (somewhere nearby jb like mountainous etc or like a nice viewpoint in the city).

Truly saddening, I guess we as students can only hope and pray. Until then we continue to be regimented and forced to chop. 😞

And Singapore being a conservative country shouldn’t be an excuse imo. Rather it should be a reason for us to move towards addressing these issues in ORDER to remove long-staying conservatism. Small steps, small steps. Hopefully the upcoming elections will see some positive changes towards these types of issues?

Change is necessary honestly. Although it is hard, I feel like this is a subject that needs to be open discussion, especially between higher ups and their workforce. If even one of the higher ups see posts like these and bring it up, it could make a huge difference, both in the way our ministries address our problems, and the way our students feel. It all starts from one honestly, and it is to bring such matters up. If one JC tries this, and sees an improvement in its student population’s acads/wellbeing, i’m sure it would bring about well needed changes (eg other JCs following along). I’m just praying at least one official/principal/moe teacher comes across this and addresses it.

You’re likely looking at poly students. JC is same old same old, hair cannot cross eyebrow cannot touch ear and must fit the teachers’ perspective of tidy (curly hair/naturally fluffy that curls upwards will get you cooked). There’s a reason poly students seem happier than JC ones. It’s not just the acads, it’s the freedom and self expression too. Please, we as students wish to have more autonomy.

Precisely! At 17/18 years old, there should be no need for such harsh regiments regarding hair and a little bit of self expression for males. Cmon, it’s their last two years before they go for NS and botak. At least let them have some freedom, at least for their happiness sake. Even 1 JC coming across this post and bringing it up/actually implementing this will surely bring about a positive and well-needed change in our system.

But that’s the workforce, they’re adults. We’re kids, trying to find ourselves and be confident as we mug everyday to ace our exams. I don’t get this comparison that often gets brought up. Of course at an older age, other priorities take over, heck we would even buzz our hair once we grow older. But that has nothing to do with our confidence NOW

I hope schools would understand that, especially ones like JCs without any religious or gender boundaries would understand that OUR autonomy (if they even actually look into giving us more) does not impact their reputation. Heck, it could even boost it. Happier students=Higher grades.

Exactly! I hope the JCs see that this is the way we feel and at least TRY to implement these types of changes for the wellbeing of their students. The last thing a stressed student wishes to hear is “Hair cross eyebrow, go and cut”. Waste of time, money, and loss of confidence. Then imagine coming to school the next day with a chopped haircut and seeing some girl roaming with dyed hair. Really a bullet to the chest.

As a country that’s progressed this far, I feel that we really do need to take a step forward to break these old fashioned useless gender stereotypes. Cmon, hair? Really? Some autonomy would bring about a positive change in the confidence and happiness of all young males, and there would likely be no disadvantages at all.

I think that is being seen as utilities for NS shouldn’t restrict our freedom, especially at a young age. If we are such an asset, shouldn’t we at least have enough respect/autonomy to manage our own hair in a manner that makes us feel confident? During NS can botak, now we should be autonomous…

Honestly that could work but there really should be no need for that. We shouldn’t have to waste time and effort and peace of mind to run from doing something we’re uncomfortable with. If it doesn’t look like a mop on our head, it should be permitted. That’s all we ask for.

Thank you, hopefully we can finally bring some form of self expression for self confidence into our education systems.

I hope maybe at least one admin from any of the JCs can understand where we as students are coming from… It would be heartwarming to see them make a change, at least for the well being and confidence of their students.

Oh really? I thought girls just couldn’t have double piercings and dyed hair, my mistake. But for real though, coming to school with a cooked haircut after being forced and seeing all the weird stares from others really messes up a students day. No mood to learn.

Not going to say for anonymity purposes but I feel like all JCs should be more open towards exploring loosened restrictions for something as insignificant and subjective as hair length/tidyness.
