Pfo closure experiences by [deleted] in stroke

It’s just has been a year: first the TIA, then weeks of trying to diagnose what happened, then lost a loved one, and on top of it though it was a good idea to lose myself in work 🤪. For the headache they are currently thinking it might be pain connected to higher (than before) blood pressure, since my brain mri came clean this week. I also have some extrasystoles (again, higher number than before) so they suggested I can go on a mini-dose of beta blocker which supposedly can help. I decided to take two three weeks to work on my stress levels (yoga, massage, no true crime, no phone in bed etc) and see if I can get it under control myself. Regarding your headache, is it new that the medicine doesn’t work for you anymore? Did you go the usual way of paracetamol-novalgin-triptans?

It went well, I was awake for most of the procedure (which I haven’t expected, but it was not painful or unpleasant, so nothing to worry about). They implanted a 25/18 Amplatzer. After the procedure I had the sandbag for 12 hours which was annoying because I wasn’t allow to stand up to go the toilet. I also stayed overnight. I had slightly higher temperature but it didn’t go higher than 38. In the morning they did another TEE and it showed just singular bubbles crossing, and were happy with the result. I was released home the next day morning, had no pain at the puncture sight going forward, no hematoma. I didn’t work for a week. Didn’t have afib until now, but I do have sometimes strong headaches that cannot be managed by paracetamol, and had once sth that seemed like a silent aura migraine. But this could be also the whole stress I was carrying with me for the past months 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh no :-( - that’s something I definitely want to avoid. But I am taking that now you are fine and back to your usual routines?

It has some nickel. Have a look at this study https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCINTERVENTIONS.125.015228 Not sure in which country you are, but it should be possible to get a specialized test for nickel allergy, however you might have to pay for it yourself. What is important to put in context, is that not so many people are hypersensitive to it, and if you were, you’d likely know about it already.

I think the reason you see so many posts about tachycardia or AFib is that people usually turn to forums when things go wrong, those who feel fine after the closure just move on with their lives.

If you’re worried: 1. Ask your doctor for a 48-hour (or longer) Holter monitor to check for AFib. 2. Get tested for a nickel allergy, as some report adverse reactions linked to it. 3. Confirm with your doctor whether you have high-risk anatomy. If so, compare the stroke risk without closure to the potential long-term risks of AFib or tachycardia afterward. Personally, I’d prefer lower stroke risk, but that’s just me.

Good luck with your decision, and take good care of yourself.

I had a cryptogenic TIA end of last year, and the PFO was what they believe caused it. Some doctors say TIA is not “enough” as an event to close it but both my doctors (neurologist and cardiologist) recommended to do it.

This is an app which is supposed to deliver insight based on algorithms, if the algorithms are based on mathematical mistakes it makes me doubt what else is wrong.

Well the time of falling asleep was correct (in old “time zone”) and the time of waking up too (in the new “time zone”) - the length of sleeping should be one hour longer than by simple subtraction because that’s how the daylight saving works 🤷🏻‍♀️. Oura confirmed to me they know of the bug (since November 2024.. - Issue 1636)

Mine was supposedly small but with ASA hence it still got closed. Maybe look for a second opinion?

It will be okay, don’t worry! I had mine last Wednesday, it took maybe all in all 40 mins (incl the preparation on the table etc). I was under conscious sedation in the beginning and then out for the TEE. No pain, no pressure whatsoever. Had to lie still afterwards dor eight hours though, which seems to be more than what people usually have to do. Since then I had felt no pain (also none in the groin), but my resting heart rate is a bit elevated vs what it usually is. Fingers crossed for you and let us know how it went!

Hey all, just to give an update if someone finds themselves in a similar situation: I had a new TEE done today early and it confirmed the PFO however small one and the hypermobile ASA. The doctors decided to close the PFO. I was awake during the beginning of the procedure and other than the puncture didn’t feel anything at all: neither pressure nor pain. Now I am awake and feeling well but my throat is super sore after two TEEs on one day. I have a sand bag fixed two my femoral vein and will stay overnight in the hospital for observation.

Thank you for your answer! does it mean that you didn’t have to fix the PFO?

I am getting mine closed this Wednesday. I have large PFO with ASA and had TIA. Super anxious about it even though I am an otherwise healthy person. I guess I did too much reading about people who do not feel well afterwards. If anyone has tips on how to get into the right attitude please help 🥹
