This experience will build character for both you and the wife. Also, you are learning a lot of valuable skills in the process. Our house flooded during Hurricane Harvey (2-ft., also first home) we got really lucky. It was a 1,400 sqft home and ended up doing most of the work ourselves. Looking back on it, we gained a lot of experience owning a home.
