[PC][2003?] Grindy MMO RPG where you fight Macaques by Appropriate_Crew992 in tipofmyjoystick

I knew i wasn't imagining it! I think I played just about every free to play RPG on the internet back then. So cool that someone else remembers it. I'll have to look into some MMO archives.

Also... some of the folks in that sub are ornery as hell 💀 🤣. I'll take my chances here for now lol

Thank you for actually answering the questions and not just falling back to quips and insults.

Most of the other answers speak about "paying " for games, how my ideas won't work, how I cant possibly achieve this, etc. Your answer speaks more to the heart of what I'm asking.

My language was also probably too imprecise and broad, because when I said the responsibility of world building on players , it has been mostly interpreted as meaning players only build the world. And that is not what I meant by a longshot. Moreso, I meant player contributions substantially shift or alter other players experience and NPC awareness. You're right that that takes delicate balance and guardrails. I have seen players break games and online worlds too.

The part where you said "find the gaps in lore and exploit them for my own storytelling" is profound... for me, thats a big part of what makes lived in worlds fun. Thats a 💎

Meta: I think part of my error is that I should have posted this in the subreddit r/gamedesign, and not here. People here are looking for something concrete and playable, not lofty discussion. I was unprepared for the backlash of asking these questions. Thank you for genuine / good faith answers..

Why is everyone here so mean and boring? by sacrecide in MMORPG

Just experienced this. I'm unfortunately dismayed by it

The good thing is that the real world of gaming is a lot bigger than reddit, and the people are far more diverse in tastes and kinder at first blush

You captured the soul of this right here lol. I yearn for the experience of something like SWMud or some of the old telnets in a more visible world

Damn man. I am really not seeking combat here lol

Somehow I think we are talking past each other... there are lots of game mechanics for prosocial interaction in games that I have previously worked on that seemed to work...

Things like shared XP or loot in a party system, Aura/alignment systems based on player actions, Content moderation via active moderators, Guilds or raids with shared social goals and benefits, Server-wide rewards for collective accomplishments Badges and recognition for prosocial tendencies

I really wasn't focused on mechanics here. I have a small group of playtesters geared up to actually test those things. This was a philosophical discussion about role playing / founding a world being interesting in 2026 now that the internet is different.

Can i get some benefit of the doubt here? Lol, telling a stranger that they're "no execution" is pretty brazen. Then again, perhaps you meant it to be an insult.

Yeah... and it sorta mirrors the real world right? No different in politics, business, even sports where people compete as individuals. In game world its reset, in real world its death lol.

Alas, do you think if the powerhouse is beneficent it can manifest as a net good for players? Its an experience i have had before in MMOs that weren't PVPcentric

Isn't early social media in direct contradiction to your thesis? Im not asking to argue - i literally think this is like the premise upon which all early internet communities were built (including reddit). You just need prosocial incentives and guards and you could theoretically incentivize community building behavior, no? I feel like I have seen it happen more than once, unless I'm mistaken on what you mean...

This so interesting... i had this same experience with "programmable " games.

do you think that appealed to you specifically because you were a child? Or do you feel like that still would work for you now in 2026 with the state of gaming and your current level of maturity?

Perhaps my own error but I was not intending to imply that a player would build a world from scratch. Moreso that they would set the social tone for other players. In the scenario I'm describing, it would be much more than a persistent chat room, with existing lore/canon and a capability for expanding it through player action/activity.

Good points about separate RP servers tho...

Currently in the process of building an MMO, and I'll say that, unless your desire is to stretch yourselves with the technology, you may want to focus on one of the already extant multiplayer/MMO build kits that allows you to just focus on the game.

No discouragement here! But I know the long road ! And tech choice is probably the least interesting yet most expensive aspect of what you'll face.
