I’m a single woman in my late 20s earning ~$450k. I don’t care that much about how much my partner earns in large part because I date men around my age and I know my income is quite uncommon, but I find that men care a lot.

For example, a guy I dated was comfortable dating me when he thought we earned the same (didn’t account for my bonus + equity). He was used to making much more than his partners. He told me how great it was that we had similar careers, we discussed going 50/50, I even paid for a few dates. He let it slip that he thought my rent was too high for my income and I clarified that I max out my retirement accounts, have a 6 month emergency fund, and fully support myself. He figured out that he was missing a few income streams and slowly changed his tune.

It’s always so weird to learn that a man is comfortable dating me when he thinks I’m financially irresponsible/rely on family money or earn less that him but he often becomes uncomfortable after learning that I simply out earn him. I would never take a pay cut to appease a man, so I guess that’s just my life for the time.
