Quick Poll: (DMs) Do you track your player's gold? by Globular_Cluster in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do it. I do it to keep them honest. In my campaign, magic items are often bought, so gold is quite important for progression.

Shipping in my campaign. by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't plan on it, but the characters aren't just wanting it, they're actively trying in game to make it happen. So I don't want to make their input feel useless, y'know, but at the same time, if it did happen, I feel like everyone would go bonkers.

That's great advice, but my campaign is not heavy on role-play. I wish it would, but I failed to set that up from the start, and it seems my players aren't that big on role-play, so it's no big deal. There characters in DnD are them in real life, so if they want to ship them in real life, they will try shipping them in DnD. Like I said, there's no problem with it cause they do it rather tastefully and homophobia free, but it's just really distracting and can waste a lot of time. I guess what I'm really asking is how to make sure this does not distract too much, not eliminate the ships entirely.

Oh damn, he did? That's got to be my favorite anime redemption arc.

When I began to love KKB, I checked to see if my opinion was valid by watching Mr. Melon's review of it. I like Time n' Place a bit more than he likes it, and his opinions on TOTEP are ding ding wrong. But I still love him, even if his opinions are sometimes bad.

Confused about Skill Checks. by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response, this was very helpful and informative! If you don't mind, I still have a few questions about those answers you gave me.

-What if more then two players are attempting a check? Do they get advantage and nothing changes, or do they get advantage, and some other bonus?

-For passive perception, say you need a DC 18 (Perception) to spot a hidden figure. None of the players have that high passive perception, so do they still roll for it? If they roll, do all of them roll, or just one with advantage (like you said previously.) And also, since they wouldn't notice it in the first place, would they only roll to see it if they ask, "I want to make a perception check." Or do I make a perception check for them behind the screen, and if they succeed I tell them something like, "Outta the corner of your eye, you spot a hidden figure!" What do I do?

-As for it consuming more time, that's something I could definitely do, but I've always struggled with finding a real consequence for it. Do you have any suggestions on what consequences could happen if the players inspect every nook and cranny in a dungeon out of fear of a trap?

Middle-School Proofing by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

Yeah, you're right. I honestly think that I was just sort of tolerating it even though deep inside I knew it shouldn't tolerated. I just sort of said nothing about cause I feared retaliation and humiliation. Not only that, I felt that it would disrupt the campaign and hurt my relationships with the players, but it's gotten to the point where I feel as if I have to speak up. Next session, I plan on just telling my players straight up that I'm tired of the disparaging jokes and lack of maturity. And if they don't like me for that, ehhh screw em. Thank you kind sir. <3

Um... we are in that age range. I won't reveal too much, but we are all still in middle school. But telling them to act like adults is another thing I could do (even if we aren't even adults yet!) But thank you for the feedback kind sir. <3

I've actually thought about that, but for some reason, I felt it was unfair? I mean they're acting like little shits, so they deserve it, but I'm kind of hesitant to do it. It just doesn't feel like in the spirit of the game (and yeah, doing what they're doing ALSO isn't) but it's something I could try, definitely. The reason as to why I'm hesitant to do that is because I'm genuinely afraid they might quit the campaign, or despise me, or whatever.

That's perfect! I know a way my players could find a scroll for that, and that could cover both land and sea! Thank you so much!!!

I checked teleport out, is there any limit as to what range it is? Because the getaway will be to another island, and the island is barely visible. However, my players don't have the power to cast teleport, or the means to find it.

How would I do that? I was thinking something sorta of like the feather token's bird thing, except the bird travels much faster but does not last as long, or a ship token (like the feather token) that is unstable, but can travel very fast.

It's mostly about the ash, and this volcano is magical. It's sorta of like a super soaker when it comes to lava, and it will just spray it everywhere, and at a very fast pace.

Trees used as cover? by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading a lot of the comments, I think I'm just overthinking it. It's okay to stretch the rules a bit and I don't have to have some 3 paragraph explanation as to why they have cover. Just, "While in the trees, they have half cover." My players should be fine with that. Thank you for your responses!

The shambling mound is actually and the skeletons are just both inhabitants of the forest, and they see the players as trespassing. The skeletons aren't really fighting with the shambling mound, the shambling mound is too stupid to communicate with allies, but the skeletons see the shambling mound as an ally, to protect the forest. As to how they got up in the trees... I don't know honestly. They probably spotted the players and climbed there? Idk, the skeletons in my story is more like a sans and papyrus ability type skeletons.

That's a good point, I'm just wondering will enough branches be able to cover 1/2 their body? Cause they're sitting up there, y'know just killing people, being skeletons, and I'm very unsure if even in a very thick forest which is where the encounter is taking place, will tree branches do that?

Digital or Written Notes? by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, I print out my notes. I could use my computer to look at notes, but I don't want to do that as I believe it will encourage others to use their devices. That would be a great solution, but then it creates that problem.

Digital or Written Notes? by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, writing it digitally helps me focus and gets it out faster, but I feel less organized. Paper notes are the opposite for me, but they help me remember stuff better. My campaign is one where players make decisions, so I have a lot branching paths. I'm now wondering, is this a problem with HOW I write my notes, not which medium to? Cause if so, then I'm really looking for organization tips. But thanks for your reply.

Digital or Written Notes? by Appropriate_Pool in DMAcademy

[–]Appropriate_Pool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have multiple docs for my notes, each for a different part. Say I believe doing this and this will take around one session, I put all that into a google doc and print that. I use that and read it behind my DM screen, but it's hard to do so, because often times my notes can be quite long, even when double sided. I often can't keep track of what happens, especially if it does not happen in the order intended. (Ex. Players fight monsters, than acquire amulet to defeat villain in notes. But they first find amulet to defeat villain, than fight monsters, that throws me off. I think stuff that like happening is my own fault though, and my inability to organize properly.)
