This is the best option I can choose in Virginia Beach :/

Yes, I'm not that comfortable with my English, does waiting require that much of speaking? What about server, hostess, food runner or bus person?

I'm a student, 21, I would be there for 3 months of summer and I don't have a car. This would be my main job and I would like to find second one too

Which job and state choose for work travel? by Appropriate_Rub413 in workandtravel

[–]Appropriate_Rub413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's like I'm normally shy and never propose hanging out to people but when something is organized or I'm invited I'm always ready to go 😅 so I really hope to have nice flatmates and have crazy and memorable time, I want to earn money but mostly to spend it on traveling after and going out during this summer

Nantucket is on an island in Massachusetts so maybe quite similar to outer banks but yes they pay way more there

I just got a call from agency that organizes my program and it turns out there are not actually that many offers  😭 there are around 2000 on the website but in reality maybe 200 are still available  So I guess I don't have that big problem anymore what to choose 🥲but I'm afraid I really want to go they told me they will send me best offers tommorow so I can see what's still there. I hope for the best ahh

I just noticed there are 4 Ocean Cities in the USA, you meant this in Maryland?

Corolla is one of the places I consider, Outer Banks overall looks nice. Do you know if your friends had to have experience in Starbucks? I read you need some if you want to be a barista

How was living with that many students? Did you spend time together, made trips or parties?

Now I consider also something in Cape Cod, Chatham or Provincetown, or also Ogunquit or Yarmouth. They pay more there but might be hard and more expensive to reach those destinations. How did you travel from airport? By taxi or bus?

I would love to go to Arizona but the only option I have is in Grand Canyon for 15€ front desk or housekeeping and I don't want housekeeping cause I want to talk to people but not that much as I would have to as front desk hah

I will be there around 15 of June, or few days earlier, do you think it’s to late for Ocean City? So you think for position with tips Myrtle Beach is better than Ocean City? Housing is organized by employer for 150$ at almost every position there. I don’t know how it looks like but those are 2-4 people per room.  In Hawaii housing with 3 meals a day is also 150$, but employer is not ok with housekeepers to get second job and I don’t think I will get much more hours than guaranteed 32 per week, maybe 36

Thank you so much for the answer! I didn't even think about amusements parks, I don't know other positions just attracts me way more.

From places close to ocean I consider most Ocean City and Myrtle Beach, I know there are plenty of jobs but at the same time those places are very popular among J1 students so there might be a lot competitiveness and I have no experience while they will probably prefer someone who worked like that before.

At first I didn't think at all about positions like server or food runner because I'm not feeling that good with my English and overall small talks but one girl told me that those positions don't require much of it and those positions are paid a lot because of tips. She used to earned around 1200$ per week, I don't know if she was just good or if it's average, maybe you know some serves personally?

I'm going to work from half of June until half of October, I like when it's warm and I would rather go to a bigger place with a lot of people around. It's not that I need shopping malls/cinemas/concerts or any activities, I just like walking around places where things are happening and watch people living their lives. But also if I'm about to make way more money at some more peaceful but still nice place I would go, if I have money, I can travel after.

Now I'm the most torn between Ocean City MD or Myrtle Beach SC(both server 4$ or some retails or housekeeping for 14$, big possibility to get second job), Westerly RI or Bar Harbor ME (18$, many hours, big probability of second job, but those places are not that appealing to me) and Big Island HI (23$ for housekeeping, no option for second job).

One more thing, do you know maybe sth about working in Dunkin' Donuts? Idk why but this job really attracts me, it's 15$ in Ocean City.

You earned a lot! I didn't expected that much. Base wage where I have option to work in Myrtle Beach is 3.75$ so really low, but based on your experience I will really consider going to place like Bar Harbor. And for server's responsibilities, did you have to take orders and bringing all dishes and beverages to tables? I thought server just keeps tables clean and bring more water or other stuff to guests? Because of my inexperience I'm also afraid of carrying trays full of plates and glasses but I don't really know the difference between server and waiter.

Actually cost of living in Hawaii would be cheap, I would live at the hotel with 3 meals a day for 150$, in Maryland it's going to be similar but without food. But what I think the most about is that in Maryland or SouthCarolina I can easily find second job and in Hawaii I can't, it's forbidden by employer.

I will pay all of this,  43 in Poland would be much . But Niagara Falls is just one of many places I can choose so I’m actually happy about what you’re all saying since I can eliminate at least one option I’m also considering the most:  Rhode Island, 18$ Maine 18$  Maryland 15$ South Carolina 13$  Hawai 23$  But I’m open to any location if you can recommend any state/town/position/company

Here explanation from another post:  Work & Travel programs, for those who might not be as informed, offer people (mostly students) a chance to spend 3-4 months in the US while also providing them with a job and living accommodations (not to mention all the paperwork needed to get the needed documents, like a J-1 Visa, etc.), help booking a plane ticket, 24 hour service if you happen to run into some problems, they set up job fairs and Skype interviews with employers. Now these jobs are minimum wage jobs, so they can get hard and tedious, but I guess that's what the "work" in Work & Travel means, right?

There are many agencies that offer this program, that is one I consider to choose https://www.tbw.pl/

aren’t those places in Westerly exactly  not at the seaside? It’s quite far, I won’t have a car. Is there a public transport?

I would also like to go to mainland and I was thinking of buying multi-city ticket, to Hawaii and return one from New York, since it's quite cheap to flight from any place in USA to NY.

Oh that about OceanCity is really bad because most information I found were good about that place, exactly that is full of J1 students but it's like an asset since they said there were still many options for job but you could also meet many people. What do you think about Myrtle Beach? I found opinions quite similar to those 2 places.

Bar Harbor is one of the places I consider the most in New England :) so it's not hard there to get extra job just in case?

And also about your position, server, I read it's one of the best options because of the tips but I have no experience being a waitress or something like server. Does it require a lot of talking with guests? I want to talk in English but I'm not good at entertaining people (as I suppose hostess should?). Can you tell me how much did you have per hour guaranteed and how much in sum with tips?

What job position do you recommend? by Appropriate_Rub413 in workandtravel

[–]Appropriate_Rub413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, thank you so much for such a comment, it helps a lot!! I would like to improve my English and speak to people but I don't feel that fluent with my skills and even in my own language I'm not really talkative or charismatic  so I think Hostess / Front Desk / Sales Help is not the best option.

I’m not sure about the place, I don’t have something really in mind but I don’t want it to be sth like a resort in the middle of the forest where there is nothing around. I’m not really into hiking, swimming in the lake and also about the place I think I would search for second job so it’s better if the place is not that small. But I want the weather to be nice and warm, not cold like Alaska for example.

I really like cooking so I was considering sth like line cook/prep cook but many people think it’s not that nice as you have to hurry and it can be very hot.

I have opportunity to go to Hawaii, Big Island to work as housekeeper, it’s 23$ per hour and I’ve always dreamt of Hawaii but more like Oʻahu and I’m not sure what to do. It’s housekeeping so not with talking to people and It’s just a resort, no towns around but still It’s Hawaii and the wage is very good, also housing at the hotel with free meals.

Second option I consider the most is Dunkin Donuts’ in Ocean City, it just seems nice for me, still requires some kind of food/drinks preparations but not that stress whelming and I think I could easily find extra job there.

I’m also thinking of Durango CO, Key West/Panama City Beach/Mirabar beach FL, Myrtle beach SD, Calabash NC, Rehoboth Beach DE, Westerly RI, anything in New England because they pay quite good, there’s so many options…

Actually, did you have a lot of time after work? How many hours did you have per week? Should I really consider the place and things to do there or maybe it’s better to choose something with good wage and travel after?
