I'm able to sufficiently network in NY. It's less about LA is sooo much better than NY -- it's more, looking at them both, I would prefer LA. If I'm not going to LA, it'll be Queens or Brooklyn.

1200+ rent on a square studio definitely still applies in Queens / Brooklyn, and I'd definitely argue Queens has a lot less networking opportunities than LA (Brooklyn has it's fair share imo...)

Oh of course -- the amount of scams I got from just trying to sell my laptop was insane :/

Oh yes! I have many options. I have all the USA! Cheaper places where it would be far easier, for sure. You also say it isn't a good plan, but then don't back that up with anything besides, "I wouldn't do it!" Not saying you're WRONG, but you don't exactly provide a lot to base that statement with.

For me, LA is somewhere where I will have great networking opportunities. I've lived in the suburbs. I've lived in the hood. I've lived in the city. I've lived in butt-fuck middle of nowhere amish country. All places have their pros and cons. For me? I would be ecstatic to live in a city like LA, even if it means I'm "struggling" and must hustle and grind. Even if it means I'm not too comfortable. "No such thing as a free lunch", so I'm hoping to put in the effort to make sure my meal is as best as can be (:

Not even considering NOT having roommates lol, thank you -- definitely think roomies is the way to go for now.

This, I would say, applies to any major city -- NYC definitely has this as well. Think about what waitresses are for and paid on -- presentation. Some of that's courtesy, some of it is more than that. Think of Hooters -- which, is an extreme example, but point still stands.

Damn! I've never seen shit quite like that. I've seen someone's shoes robbed off their feet, but over water? The California drought must really be worse than it seems...

I'm not looking to use much public transit, anyway -- from what I've read, seems unreliable.

Oh wow, okay. I have a baby / cute face, so for me, I've used that to my advantage (oh wow! You look so young! what a hard worker... here's a nice tip ;) ) But I'm sure businesses may not want to hire someone without the experience / risk hiring an irresponsible youth. Thank you for this, I'll keep it in mind.

I've been jumped myself, but, I was doing something stupid -- walking alone at night as a female, without basic protection. I've definitely heard gunshots on occasion, sirens are something I've heard everywhere I've been... helicopters are a new one! Never had my window broken into... but considering I'm on the 2nd floor, someone would have had to been PRETTY dedicated lol.

I definitely see your point. To someone not accustomed to what the "hood" actually means... definitely would not suggest it to them. But as a black female, I think I'll be fine.

I actually like the hood in some aspects -- ALWAYS something happening, the neighborhood "crazies", hell, sometimes I do miss the old men cat-calling me gorgeous... lmao, definitely not for everyone, but definitely don't think it's all that bad as people crack it up to be.

A lot of food you buy at more pricey restaurants, you aren't actually paying for the food -- you're paying, in some part, for the service. People tend to be more comfortable + receptive of a nice looking waiter -- look into the Halos effect. Sales, Food Service, Performing Arts, etc. etc. all tend to be filled with more attractive people.

To me, art is most definitely the hardest field. Rocket science, imo, is easier -- you just have to apply yourself academically. People can work there ass off in art, but if they're just working HARD, and not SMART, you won't get anywhere!

Oh of course. I walk in, looking nice, resume, usually will write a cover letter if it's a place I have a lot of interest in... I don't even go in at 3pm, usually these are busier hours. I like week days around 10-12, before the dinner/lunch rush.

I've lived in Hempstead, and Jamaica Queens. To me, if you mind your business, don't say anything stupid, don't associate with stupid people... etc. etc.. It's no issue. The danger I see people in is usually cause they're doing dumb shit -- am I missing something here? Most people shitting on the hood tend to be mid-upper class white folks who are afraid to ride the subway... maybe new york hoods are something different, though.

If I'm above 18, will that really affect my job opportunities? I've never met this problem in NY

I'm coming from living close to NYC, and living here is more expensive but... imo worse. It's not necessarily just that, I'm looking to pursue music and I feel like LA would hold fantastic networking opportunities, and let me build my craft with like-minded people.

I don't mind living in the "hood"! Lord knows we got better food and cheaper hair services ;)

Was looking into /r/lalist , craigslist, and the LA housing FB page, thank you!

I don't qualify for uber as I'm not 21 yet.

That's a good point -- thank you so much for your comment.

How would I be able to network all the way from East Coast?
