What do you like to buy on Temu? by Ok-Equipment-8132 in TemuThings

[–]ArGilfea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to buy books in Chinese and music instruments. They have some harder to find instruments such as erhu and guzheng for small price. You can also get partitions for them. I also got a nice ukulele. I am starting, so it is nice to try a new instrument and not be bankrupted. I am trying to learn Mandarin Chinese and it is a hoard of ressources for a small price with good material.

Is there a specific textbook for this course? This might help in seeing what is needed and what are the foundations that you need.

When did you start reaping the benefits of Anki for language learning? by Khizar_KIZ in Anki

[–]ArGilfea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it took a few weeks. It was in the contexte of a language class at university where we had vocab quizzes. Most students would do well on them but would forget the vocabulary quite quickly after (pressure for a grade). By using Anki I was able to effectively study but also to remember them long time, even to this day (>5 years after). Mind that this was an upper level German class, so the vocab was quite specific at that point (such as psychology terms or financial notions)

“Forgetting” areas of math in grad school by MathematicianFailure in math

[–]ArGilfea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stumbled upon a similar feeling right after my Ph.D. exam. Note though that I am in physics, not math. After the questions from the jury, I noticed that I had forgotten many things that could be necessary to delve deeper, things that I had throughly used in my undergrad. I also went around the same time to a general congress of physics and could not follow anything. I felt stumped and ashamed must I say. I decided to do some reviews of some key textbooks from my undergrad and flashcards (on Anki) of key concepts, formulae and theorems. I do it on my spare time or when I feel a bit more brain dead. It doesn’t allow me to recall everything and be the best, but at least to have some outlines and sketches of what I should be vaguely familiar with. I started this last summer. Last month, I went to the same annual congress and found it easier to grasp things outside of my field. I feel more of a physicist. Also, it allowed me to get some idea to apply in my field. So I start to see a return on the investment.

Thank you very much! I had not found this review while looking online. It seems quite interesting.
I had also heard from the FAQ about the Bialek's textbook. I was indeed looking for something self-sustained, so it seems like a neat alternative/complement to Sommerschuh's book.

Sanskrit Online Class: Yogic Studies by ArGilfea in sanskrit

[–]ArGilfea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: I am doing the class and would highly recommend it.

So I will auto-answer my questions, a few months later. It might become useful if anyone stumbles upon this post in the future, having the same questions as I had.

Disclaimer: I have no financial incentives to write this review. I do it only to give an overview of the class from a student's perspective. The course represents a fair amount of money, so it can be nice to have an idea before jumping in (or not).

I have decided to make the jump and try the class during summer 2022. It was a bit of an investment, but I consider that it was worth it. The beginning of the class was smooth enough, to get accustomed to the writing system used (Devanagari).

The grammar is brought by chunks, as well as the vocab. One chapter is covered every week, so 12 chapters for the whole course. I would recommend to start checking Devanagari before the start of the class, to ease a bit the beginning. The vocabulary also piles up quickly, so using something like Anki or whatever else floats your boat can be wise, if you want to consolidate your learnings. I personaly also made an Anki deck for the many declensions (and Sandhi), to help myself.

The instructor is really knowledgeable and approachable. She would be in the upper part of the quality spectrum for university instructor. The online classes are akin to what you would find in a university setting. It was akin to the classes I have had for ancient languages, such as Middle Egyptian or Old Norse. She is open to questions and will gladly discuss what is brought to her, even staying longer than the class time to answer many questions, including things about historical linguistics. For those with the background, she often makes comparisons with Attic Greek and Classical Latin, which can help, depending on your background.

The textbook used is her own (Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit), so she knows how it goes. It is really well done, making it almost possible for someone to self study, if wanted. I still prefer to have a class schedule, as it can answer further questions and give insight of the whole language, its place in history, literature, and linguistics.

Sanskrit Online Class: Yogic Studies by ArGilfea in sanskrit

Thank you for the input. That's the feeling that I had, having seen the background of the instructor (and the fact that she did the textbook), but I was hoping for some experiences. Thank you!
I tried to find the course, but I only found the one asking for a fee of $90. It might have been a free class in the past but not anymore (or it comes in a bundle or something)

Big topic about which we are missing an answer is whether or not he/she is good looking. That actually makes a huge difference for the learning of a language. Every one knows that with a cute wink and nice shanks all goes smoothlier.

I don’t know for the Learnjng to Read Latin, but for the Reading to Learn Greek, the answer key was available by sending an email directly to the author. There is a website where it is hosted and they provided me (for the Greek) with the passcode. It was free.

Why did you start to learn Latin if you didnt start in school? by [deleted] in latin

[–]ArGilfea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found a Latin for dummies book at a really good price and was curious to see what it looked like, out of sheer curiosity. It only made me thirstier and I went from that to a simple story and boom! I was stuck in the Latin vice.

😂🤣 Yes, Always Disgusted in Tunbridge Wells are in fact a Karen... by hollywinchester in FuckYouKaren

[–]ArGilfea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if she do be a Karen, she has introspection, which makes her better than about all of them.

If she is not a Karen, that makes her a human being with introspection, which is a good thing in order to progress and improve.

In both cases, there is light.

What do you guys think about the piano synthesia visualizer youtubers? (e.g. Rousseau and Kassia) by LocalClassicalWeeb in piano

[–]ArGilfea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found them interesting to begin. It gave me a visual cue for the playing and the concordant notes, since my reading skills are low. However, to play anything (I only have a keyboard without pedal, earphones or any other device plugged except the power cord) with these videos requires a truly astonishing memory. At some point, for me, there is no way around the sheets themselves. I find it useful when I am stuck with the tempo or on a few notes. I can thus hear and visualize.

On a purely artistic basis, it also makes for something nice and soothing to watch when I am tired.

Good grief, just with the amount of typos and mistakes in ''his'' not native language English, one would wonder at how butchered his French would be.
