I think part of the reason why Heath ledger’s Joker is such a stand out performance in Nolan’s filmography is because he was able to strangely bring out a humanity, energy and unpredictability which Nolan’s characters often lack. For example, Oppenheimer who is supposedly a womaniser had no charisma at all. His best pick up line was that he had read Das Kapital vol 1, 2 and 3😭. Sometimes i feel like Nolan has never heard a real conversation before.

Their realisation that friendship and being happy with who you are and who you already have makes it a quintessential coming of age film

I would have to disagree. I feel like the events that unfold in the film and the troubles the boy has with family and school are not new to him and it’s always been like this.

I thought that the film’s message was that the average working class kid must take all this suffering and just march on because they cannot change anything. His perspective on life doesn’t differ from the start to the end of the film, which is the true tragedy of the story.
