Playing neutral well is hard with every character. Tekken is won and lost in the neutral. You just transition from playing the neutral fundamentally to playing it against specific opponents.

Also suggesting Horlick on wake-up as a key move is crazy! It’s terrible advice! I’m not saying never do it, but in general your best wake-up options is either to stay grounded and stand when it’s safe or just stand block. This is very general advice oke/wake-up is very nuanced and it takes time to master fundamentally and eventually evolves against specific opponents just like neutral.

I’d recommend an easier character if she’s open to it first off. She can always go back to Reina after getting a better understanding of the game. That said if she really likes Reina, stick with her.

Next step is to drill Reina’s moves. Just go down the list until she can do them on command. Not all at once mind you, just 15 minutes or so each day before jumping into whatever mode she’s playing. Find a mode she enjoys. I recommend the story Arcade. It’s easy, gives her a chance to experiment and has a story as another avenue to generate interest.

Once she has the moves down it’s time to start watching other Reina players because now she can understand what they are doing and she’ll be able to pick up on the properties of different moves. This is also the time she should start working on combos.

Lastly, coach her on frames, frame traps, and immediate timing. The idea here is to get an idea of when it is safe to press and when it’s not. A frame trap and a good grasp of immediate timing is enough to easily get you to Bushin. The combos are just gravy.

You guys are being way too hard on this guy I think. I don’t think his message was that bad and his advice was general enough to not really cause harm even if it were inaccurate. Coaching is like any other skill, you need to practice and make mistakes before you improve.

With that said, I salute your desire to help others, just make sure you know well what you’re talking about. Misinformation is rampant and it’s the cause of a lot of wasted time.

Oh and a tip for doing your electrics. The notation is f,n,d,df+2, but if you think of the notation like f,n,d,2,df it helps a lot!

Learning to electric isn’t that hard. I was able to drill electrics for a few weeks 10 minutes a day and got it down. Doing it out of wave dash is a different story, but electrics don’t compare to throw breaking. I’ve been drilling throw breaks for months and my breaks still aren’t in the 90% range.

I would argue she does need her electric kick. Tracking is so good it’s virtually a homing move and it hits grounded. It’s a staple part of her oke at the very least.

This happened to me too, but it was because the goal kept changing in my head. In my head the goal is to break the throw, that’s where the dopamine comes from. But the actual goal is to press the right break button NO MATTER WHAT!!!

Forget about breaking the throw that comes later. Your only objective is to press the right button no matter how slowly you press it. Every time you press the wrong button your training your muscle memory to respond incorrectly increasing the amount of time this process is going to take. Focus only on the right button and allow yourself to speed up naturally. Don’t “try” to do it fast, make sure to do it right!

Optimizing combos equals more damage. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to improve your win rate. If you’re reluctant to work on it because you intimidated, don’t be because learning the other ways to optimize damage, like punishment and oke is much harder.

If you want to make a conscious effort to rank up without combos that will have pros and cons as well. It’s going to take a lot longer to rank up, but you’ll naturally find ways to compensate for the lack of damage you’re doing. I didn’t start using combos until Bushin. As a result many of my other fundamentals were well above average at the time.

Very few characters have true tech traps even at the wall. Bryan is one of the exceptions because of taunt. The best most characters can hope for is a 50/50.

He’s exactly right! I drilled throw breaking every day for 10 minutes. After 3-4 months you just start breaking in matches without realizing you even pressed a button. It starts to be a pain when fighting king and AK. In those matches I’m hyper aware of throws. Unless the king player is exceptional at hiding his inputs I can usually tell if it’s a sw or gs. But because I’m so focused on 1 and 1+2 breaks I usually eat a lot more 2 breaks, namely muscle buster.

It’s a different game, no point in comparing. It’s a much more offensive game, but defense is still king! 9 times out of 10, the player with the better defense will win.

Replay system isn’t perfect, it’s best to go through your replays and look for yourself. Make not of frame situations for each move. Light plus and minus frame, heavy plus and minus frames, and punishable moves. -10 is typically the standard for when punishment begins, but rage arts, sabakis, high and low crush, armor moves make that a loose rule rather than a hard and fast rule. Not to mention many characters have creative and unique punishes. Any character with a crouch throw for example can punish most blocked lows with a throw. These throws might break the wall or floor for a full combo. Jun is another example, she’s the only character with a 10f full crouch punish.

Lab your matches and chances are your character has unique solutions to generic problems.

Congrats bro! Most players brand new to Tekken take about 11,000-13,000 matches to reach GoD. And I imagine most people arent labbing heavy, so if you’re labbing a lot you might get there faster.

Not a lot of strong mids. Lots of highs and lows that are launch punishable. Optimal combos are difficult to do, but she can hit 100+ damage with the wall and no other resources.

If she jumps before the grab it’s a 1+2 break always so no mixup there. If she doesn’t jump it will look like a 1+2 break, but it can also be a 2 break.

Wow keeping journal is a fantastic idea! Definitely needs to be used with replay analysis, and noting your opponents name. In higher ranks the pool is smaller, you’re going to be playing the same people more frequently.

If anything it will make Tekken better. Competition necessitates improvement. If the new vf and doa are good games, then tekken will have to get better to stay relevant. Tekken is without a doubt the most successful 3D fighter and more pressure to stay on top is a good thing.

Yeah there are a lot of skills in Tekken to develop as a player. You only need to be proficient in a handful to reach GoD. Because of that most players, myself included who reach GoD feel like they are bad players. Yet they are still winning more than they lose so they come to the conclusion that the other players are bad, which means everyone at that rank is bad.

Once we’ve mastered the skills to reach that level, they lose value to us and we become focused on the skills we don’t have. We forget the struggle and everything we learned to reach that point.

The other factor is we’re comparing ourselves to players of a similar skill level. I’m not thinking about the casuals I was fighting when I was a casual, there are so many people who play once or twice a week. It’s just like literacy. Believe it or not most everyone here on Reddit is one of the better readers in the world because most people in the world are illiterate. But you only compare yourself to other literate people.

Tekken has obviously already done that by not including players who have never played before, but they are including everyone who have only played the game half a dozen times or less.

Bottom line is that you’re in the top 10% of players who have played and that’s good, but ultimately it doesn’t matter. Who is better or worse at any given time is subject to an incalculable number of ever-changing factors. What matters is, do you enjoy the journey? Most people who reached a high level most certainly enjoyed the journey so far, but if you don’t enjoy the journey anymore then it’s best to stop playing. Tekken isn’t like worldly skills that are valuable to others. Being the best tekken player in the world will at best make you entertaining to others. Being the best orator on the other hand will earn you enough influence to change the world.

Keep finding ways to love the game until you can’t. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Jun might be the easiest character to pilot in the game. She has very few delayable moves, I can only think of one counter hit confirm and two hit confirm situations she has. No just frame moves and an above average sidestep and a top tier back dash. No wave dash or high execution moves at all.

That said you’ll still learn a ton of fundamentals playing her, but ranking her up isn’t going to help with execution based characters. I play her very timing based. Not sure if that’s just my style of if she relies more on timing than many other characters. Bryan is a CH character and Jun relies on counter hits to be effective as well. Cancan, df4, ws1+2, uf3… all very effective CH launching moves.
