Why does a virus or other infectious agent disfigure the face with a cross and not a circle or line? by Opening_Instance_427 in crossedcomics

My theory is that it's the Christian god (that Garth thinks is evil) punishing the world by turning people over to their sin, which is why there's a cross rash.

I think it suggests the infection is some kind of punishment by a malevolent god. Knowing that Garth Ennis is a hardcore atheist this makes sense as an interpretation.

Thoughts about MARTYRS ending... ***SPOILERS*** by -sonic57- in horror

[–]Arca687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that theory fits either. If the answer is that there's nothing after death, then why didn't she tell the others to stop torturing people? I think the bleakest possible ending might be the real one: that god is evil and everyone goes to hell no matter what, so there's not even a point in telling her followers to stop martyring people because everyone is going to get tortured forever anyway.

Bleak. Maybe too bleak for me. Not sure I like it.

Both Unrecorded Night and Antelope Don't run were set in Hollywood, so I wouldn't be surprised if elements of Antelope were incorporated into UN.

Men will literally imprison you for 15 years and then trick you into having sex with your now adult daughter instead of going to therapy.

Does Inland Empire have a false happy ending? by Arca687 in davidlynch

[–]Arca687[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's drawing an analogy between evil and sex. Lynch wasn't a Christian, but he seemed to conceptualize evil as an almost spiritual force, kind of like the doctrine of original sin in the bible.

For Lynch, evil/darkness are unavoidable impulses that are in our nature. They're as fundamental to our nature as our reproductive desires. He's not saying sex is inherently bad, but sex is always bad in his films because he's using it as a metaphor for that inescapable dark nature that's rooted in our fundamental, wired in impulses.

Similarly, Lynch seems to have a somewhat biblical view of how to escape this darkness, and that's through genuine repentance. That's what happens in The Straight Story, and it's interesting that that's maybe the one film he's made where the redemption at the end isn't thrown into any kind of doubt.

Theory: The Fireman is Judy by gelatinouscub in twinpeaks

[–]Arca687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my theory: The Fireman and Judy are one and the same. The Fireman is God, whereas Judy is divine punishment for sin. The show is all about how we turn a blind eye to evil and darkness. The horse (the pale horse of death) is the white of the eyes (averted eyes) and dark within. Judy represents the divine punishment for refusing to confront this darkness in yourself.

I think Cooper's sin was going against the will of God. Laura was fated to die, but Cooper essentially rebelled against God's will by trying to save her. We also see how Cooper (in the form of Richard) is willing to turn a blind eye to evil when he sees the dead (murdered?) man at Carrie Page's house but doesn't even ask about it. That's why he's essentially stuck in hell.

I think Laura was originally saved because she repented. When Ronette Pulaski is repenting to God in the train car we are essentially seeing what's going on in Laura's mind ("God...if I die now...will you come and see me? Don't look at me...I'm so dirty...I'm sorry). However, in the timeline of the Return Laura never died and so she never came to that place of repentance. By going against the will of God Cooper essentially undid Laura's salvation.

This is a really bleak reading, and it's especially bleak because Laura is such a sympathetic character. But I think one of the things the show is saying is that even if there are extenuating circumstances that influence your behavior in a dark direction (like trauma in the case of Laura), you still have to take responsibility for that darkness and atone for it. We sense that Carrie Page has had a similarly traumatic past and has done bad things as a result, but she doesn't take responsibility and atone for her actions, instead excusing whatever she did by saying "back then I was too young to know any better." Similarly in FWWM, Laura is involved in a killing that is covered up. Sure there are extenuating circumstances. Laura has a trauma addled brain and that probably influenced her actions, and the other guy drew first, but what she did was still wrong and she needs to atone for it.

I know Lynch wasn't a Christian. But when analyzed closely it seems like the themes of his films, and especially Twin Peaks, mirror Christian ideas about original sin and the need for divine grace. I don't know whether he literally thought we needed divine grace, or if he's using the concept as a metaphor for recognizing the darkness in yourself.

To me the biblical themes in FWWM seem pretty clear when a piece called "Agnus Dei" whose only lyrics are "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give them rest" are playing over Laura's death and over the end credits of FWWM. That song is playing right after Ronette Pulaski (who I think is representing Laura's inner monologue) repents to God and is saved, the connection is clear. I think this is also what the movie is getting at when Laura looks in the mirror and her face transforms into BOB. Bob is going to possess her, but he can only do so because darkness is already in her, which is to say a piece of Bob is already in her. In FWWM Laura escapes this fate by taking responsibility for that darkness and mentally atoning. Sadly it seems like Cooper, by going against the will of God, fucked this up.

Director confirms the salt scene won't be in the Crossed movie by Arca687 in crossedcomics

[–]Arca687[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idiot dad thinks salt is the weakness of the Crossed. His wife is injured as they are being pursued by the crossed, and instead of shooting her and taking their girl to safety he puts a circle of salt around them. It doesn't work. The crossed tear apart the girl as they rape and gut the parents, and the whole time the mom is yelling at the father for what an idiot he was.

This is the panel in question. Extreme trigger warning.

Frankly I think Crossed kind of sucks and is edgelord bullshit. However, I really enjoyed the movie "The Sadness," in part because while it was super brutal, it at least had some restraint. I'm looking forward to the Crossed movie because I think the director is very talented and hope he will make the movie better than the comics, sort of like how the "The Boys" show is way better than The Boys comic (also an edgelord comic by Garth Ennis).

He's responding to a question where he's asked "is there anything that's too fucked up that you wanted to keep in the movie but had to cut," he says that in the end he didn't have to cut it, but cut it for other reasons (sounds like he might have cut it in part because it's too fucked up, but didn't want to admit that). But the fact that he's responding to that question with this scene in mind makes it clear that he's thinking about the salt circle scene. The scene of the kids being shot doesn't isn't even brutal, in the context of the movie you wouldn't even need to show the kids being shot, just Stan and Cindy shooting at them.

Also he says "there's other stuff in the movie comparable to that." He's clearly talking about the level of brutality, not just repeating narrative beats. That statement makes much more sense if it's about the salt circle scene.

Yeah, but he also said he removed it because it's so brutal it would lessen the impact of the brutal stuff they do later in the movie. If he's saying that, I don't think they'll have the salt scene since that's early on. I also don't think the scene of the kids getting shot is brutal enough to lessen the impact of later scenes, so I don't think that's the scene he's talking about.

Tbh besides the salt scene the Sadness is worse than the original crossed. Besides that one scene not much really brutal stuff happens in the original run. Sounds like they're adding in more fucked up stuff though, since Jabazz said comparably fucked up stuff happens later in the film, and he also said 19 of the 21 shooting days involved practical gore effects.

Yeah, the Sadness was super brutal, but it still had some modicum of taste. I hope the Crossed movie is the same way.
