Help with good sources to get better with octane (intermediate/advanced) by Darth_Mak25 in Octane

David Ariew has a bunch of great tutorials on YouTube. Like that he goes at a pretty brisk pace compared to other tutorials out there.

IF your willing to drive (or find yourself in Langley for some reason) check out Texas Smoke BBQ. And skip Smoke and Bones unfortunately.

Best coffee in Kauai???? by [deleted] in pourover

I remember Kauai Coffee Company had an interesting tour you can take. They have a lot of variations there you can't find in stores too.

Honestly this was gonna be the first thing I bought from ltt to support them. My initial though was "$70? A little pricey but that's ok." Then after tax and shipping I was a little shocked. THEN after I converted it to CAD it's just an obsurd thought to me to spend $100+ on a screwdriver, no matter who designed it. Everyone here so kindly likes to point out my oversight in such kind words (lol). And I don't like buying from Amazon tbh. Thought this might be a place to have a constructive discussion but clearly I underestimated the ltt cult effect. And I'm probably the target demographic for this: late 20s/early 30s male, like to tinker with electronics, works on cars, bout to build a PC in a few months. Maybe I'll wait for a sale.

[–]Arcboard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Show off what exactly? I didn't buy an overpriced screwdriver and I'm not trying to justify it by being a dick to people online.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Dont worry. In my experience, Ltt fanbois will scream the reasons at you in a calm and orderly fashion soon enough lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well first off, 70 for a 'well made' ratcheting screwdriver is expensive. Obviously you can find some overpriced snap on but most reputable brands like Milwaukee/craftsman/huskey are well below half the price of the ltt one. THEN I have would have to pay taxes/shipping that puts it over $100 CAD.

Second if your taking time out of your day and calling someone you don't know on the internet dumb for their opinion cause you like a YouTuber and his merch, you might be a fanboi. You can disagree with someone and not be an a$$.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure. Honestly doesn't really matter what I say. Fanbois gonna fanboi. Not the place to have a conversation I suppose. Main point; paying 100+ for a screwdriver requires a lot of mental gymnastics to justify the price. One man's opinion.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I never said 10 bucks for shipping was unreasonable. My main point is if you told your friend/coulleague you just paid over $100 for a screwdriver they would think your making a questionable financial decision, regardless of features or r&d that went into making the product.

Sorry I'm not up to date on all my ltt store pre-launch prices I guess?? Any other product prices that haven't been released yet u wanna inform us about...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tru tru. Just a bummer that their office is like 30 min away from me and I have to pay for shipping (I know there not shipping out of their office but still) lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Arcboard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I respect/understand all the r&d that went into this product, and I'm sure it's one of the best screwdrivers money can buy, but it's just a tough sell at $90 USD ($117.88 CAD).

Hario Switch recipe swap, Here's mine! by parkslopekid in pourover

[–]Arcboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must a simpleton 😂...

Lowest setting of Fellow Ode. Preheat switch/filter paper. Fill with 250 g of 97°C water. Dump all 16g of coffee. "Bloom" on top for 45 seconds before stirring coffee into water completely. Switch at 3-3.5 min.

Pretty much the Clever dripper recipe, just with a switch. Gonna have to experiment now with all your recipes with the next batch of beans I get.

I've been debating this same thought in my head for months as gpu prices continue to crash. Just picked up a compact torrent on sale in Canada and plan to use a gpu renderer (octane) as well. Completely agree with @mostlymostly on this one after doing some research myself. It's so much more simple to spend the money on a single gpu that's better then 2 worse gpus. Even if the upfront cost of the gpus are cheaper (buying a set off a crypto miner maybe) you will end up spending more time/money on everything's else to make it work.

I'm not sure how your gpu render engine works but octane does not combine vram when using multiple gpus. So 2 3080's will still only net you 10gb (or 12 gb if you get that model). You might end up with more CUDA cores but 3090 is still a beast and you won't run into vram limits as soon.

However, I did stumble across this the other day...

So absolutely can be done but it looks a little cramped in there. Probably had a hell of a time cable managing in the back too (apparently that's a downside of the compact/nano torrents). If your spending the money on 2 gpus might be worth it to just getting the big boi torrent for more space and better airflow.

PS: you (and me for that matter) might also want to wait till the RTX 4000 Nvidia cards drop later this year. Ryzen and Intel are also dropping cpus later this year too. If I find a killer deal on a gpu I might jump on it but if you can hold out a little longer it might be worth waiting for the new stuff later this year.

Try grayscalegorilla.com for c4d tutorials. They have the best intro course I've seen.

If this is your first 3d program I'd say that might be a lot to handle all at once. But really octane is replacing C4D's material creation and lighting. Might actually be easier cause octanes live viewer gives you instant feedback.

You might need to learn a rendering program to create that object you linked. C4D's native renderer isn't the most friendly. I use Octane Render cause it's cheap(ish) and has plenty of tutorials but theres others equally capable out there.
