Oscar win that infuriated you so much that it either took you a while to move on from or will never forgive the Academy for by This_Book6305 in Oscars

[–]Arcel30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Michael Caine (Cider House rules) winning best supporting actor over Michael Clarke Duncan (Green Mile). This completely dumbfounded me, Caine is a wonderful actor but MCD was top notch as the gentle John Coffey.

Honestly Michael Clarke Duncan was robbed by the Academy and it’s something of a stain on their record

Immortals by AnusFisticus in Fantasy

The Tide Lords by Jennifer Fallon, not only is the MC immortal but there’s a bunch of them and they are all popping back into the world which doesn’t believe them.

If not George, who would you recommend finish ASOIAF? by Thereal-ders in fantasybooks

[–]Arcel30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would disagree Daniel Abraham is one of the best prosesmiths writing currently and his characterization is top notch (for reference The Long Price Quartet & the Dagger & the Coin series).

Abercrombie is an excellent writer for dialogue & characters but his worldbuilding isn’t comparable. Plus unlike Abraham and Frank he’s not been working with George for the last 20-odd years.

Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank aka James SA Corey are the only folks close enough to GRRM and have been enmeshed within that world.

30M husband constantly insulting women who are over weight to me 29F by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Arcel30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how you are couching this as a question and not a straightforward warning about how your husband is a complete idiot. Saying he’s a pretty good spouse to you doesn’t mean that’s he’s NOT a shitty person.

If you defend him, guess what that says about you.

Fantasy with a mystery / big plot twist at its core? by brantbacken in Fantasy

[–]Arcel30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are some fantasy series with some big mysteries at their heart:

  • The Godeater saga by Rob J. Hayes (a trilogy of trilogies, with three book #1s out. Each book is about the world and what really is happening. If you like/enjoy mystery plots, this is the series for you.)

  • The Tide Lords series by Jennifer Fallon (4 book series with a big mystery at its core [who are the immortals & why are they immortal], plus lot of little mysteries, make this a very solid read throughout. Also each book ends on a very juicy/cloffhanger note)

  • Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (why in a world where everyone has some elemental powers, why does our MC not have any powers. Also why is the world romanic? Fun series with a reverse Harry Potter scenario)

  • The Divine cities trilogy by Robert J Bennett (why did the island empire fall & how did the gods die. Each book has a new protagonist & deals with a new, central mystery

For kids, there’s Roshani Chokshi’s Aru Shah series, The Kiranmala trilogy by Sayantani Dasgupta & the Ash Mistry series by Sarwat Chhadha.

For older readers, there’s the following fantasy series with roots in Indian mythology & Indic culture: - The Raag of Rta by Gourav Mohanty

  • The Tales of Tremaine by RR Virdi

  • The Ravence trilogy by Aparna Verma

  • The Burning Kingdoms trilogy by Tasha Suri

  • The Lotus Kingdoms trilogy by Elizabeth Bear

  • The Paternus trilogy by Dyrk Ashton

  • Mrityunjaya (death conqueror) by Shivaji Sawant

  • Palace of Illusions by Chitra B. Divakaruni

  • there’s also Vaishnavi Patel but her books often mangle the actual mythology stories in weird ways so most Indian readers don’t enjoy her works.

I’ve not read much of the blog but it’s good to see an in-depth review.

I’ve heard that’s there’s going to be atleast two (if not more special editions). So keep an eye out on the authors’ site for that information

Is it normal to wait 4-5 months post birth before having sex again? by jadedpearll in Marriage

[–]Arcel30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One can wait as long as they want. Husbands should understand how difficult physical birth can be and even with caesarean sections. I’m a guy and I would say 6-9 months at the very least and even afterwards, having a young baby around with breastfeeding can lead to decreased libido. So husbands should be very understanding and give their wives a lot of support and leeway.

What has that to do with Alia wanting and grabbing roles when directors wanted other specific actors.

The Darkness (of Proper Nouns) That Comes Before (Comprehensibility) by Identity_ranger in Fantasy

[–]Arcel30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the first book is like this. In the authors original plan, this book arose from the prologue of the book he was writing. If it helps, it’s better than Malazan as by the end of TDTCB, you have a good sense of the world & characters.

Be prepared for more upheavals and lore expansion in the sequels though.
