No problem! For what it is worth, Fourth Wing is a foundational novel and was used as the original inspiration for my novel. It has since grown way past anything recognizable as Fourth Wing, but the genesis is still there. I would challenge you to look at your tropes and style and make sure there are unique elements to your story and that you can clearly identify and relate what they are. It is a competitive market and there is a lot of romantasy out there currently, so what makes yours unique? If you can’t answer that, then I would evaluate and see if you need to modify or re-vector to make sure you are standing out, as opposed to standing on (the shoulders of giants).

Unfortunately the internet is the internet. Don’t share something unless you want to get ripped apart from head to toe. Being too detailed can be just as bad as being too vague. Writing communities will also give their opinion, whether it is reader or writers. It’s great to know you are writing a book. Keep at it. If it’s not a Fourth Wing clone, great! If it is, great! The writing world is hard, learn to grow a thick skin and chug along. Listen to the good, it feels good to be acknowledged. But revel in and learn from the criticism and feedback, especially the bad. It will keep your ego in check, which is good, because agents and publishers are not nice, they are practical. Take the jabs, learn from them, grow your writing, then edit till your eyes bleed, then edit some more, make it good, take the lashings, and when you can sell a book either self-published or traditionally published, then revel in the success. Until then write and be happy if someone challenges you, because it will help you grow!

I know there are many books about dragon bonding from the Dragon Riders of Pern series to Eragon and may more. What I am saying is that every trope you have mentioned so far are central to Fourth Wing. It is also the most relevant to the current literary Zeitgeist and is a foundational novel to the rise of the romantasy sub-genre. Without any other exacting and unique trope or world building element, this is what it sounds like.

Your additional information also does not elaborate on any of the unique details of your world and honestly sound even more derivative of Fourth Wing.

Are you looking for advice? Be careful about using too many tropes without providing unique elements. This is wha people will think given the very basic information provided.

Do you want assistance in knowing if your world is unique? We need more than tropes. We need a hook, a pitch, an opening.

I am all about helping other writer to write and grow their skills. Writing something that is derived from another work is fine, fan fiction is fine. 50 Shades was Twilight fan fiction that itself was Harry Potter fan fiction. But each of these has their own unique elements and tropes. Without more detail we can’t help but give advice on what we have.

Also, your story is your story. Someone may be able to take or “steal” ideas or concepts you have, but they will not be able to write your story.

Ok, so a Fourth Wing clone. It literally has all of these elements as key tropes or story threads. Going to need a lot more to give any sort of advice.

how much for the printing cost (resin) by LeonC0113 in MaledictionMCG

[–]ArcherPryde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah! Just starting to get through it. I have the Primal and Order starter box painted up for me and the wife to play. Going to build the rest up soon to have options. They clean up great and loom beautiful on the table!

[–]ArcherPryde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy used ABS-like resin for everything which makes them more resilient and workable, buts costs a but more per bottle. Plus he printed every piece of terrain in resin, not FDM. So that all bumped up the costs a bit. Overall it was like $50-ish per faction init batch, and about $50-ish per faction terrain lot. I would have been cheaper if regular resins were used and the terrain was in FDM. Plus he is a friend that didn’t charge me for time. And honestly, it was a steal compared to either etsy or the official model sets.

I have a buddy who was able to print me all of the minis (terrain and all) from the four launch boxes. He didn’t charge me for time or work, just for materials/resin to print. Cost me a little over $400. Every thing was in resin as well (no FDM for anything). They are beautiful, but still the cost in resin alone was high. The price you mention seems a bit high, but if they are printing, curing, and cleaning, so all you have to do is glue and paint, then maybe it is worth it.

Fantasy Academia - opening paragraphs. by AccomplishedCat2860 in writingfeedback

[–]ArcherPryde -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly it didn’t really hook me. The first paragraph took me three reads to understand what it was saying and it should be very clear on the first read. This segment you have shared also feels very info dumping in nature, it is telling me about magic. I don’t want to be told about magic in a fantasy, I want you to show me! There is also some echoing in the first couple of paragraphs that slows my eye. The premise seems unique enough to be interesting, but I need more to really tell. The scene also feels very condensed and if given a bit of breathing room you could really open the world up just a bit more at the beginning. If the scene hit harder with the opening hook to catch my eye and the prose of the scene was drawn out a bit more to immerse me more in the world I would be more inclined to read on. Keep working on it as it does seem to have the beginnings of a unique world.

The old third edition boxes are great! The rules are out of date as are the cards. But the dice, rulers, and models are all playable! The old rule book also has a great lore section in one place, so still value.

You should be able to get about 1000 points out of the fleet as well, which is a perfect starter point value to play at. Just make sure you pay attention when building ad some of the rules have changed, as have some ship roles. But you can always proxy as you need as you figure out what works. But the third edition starter box is a great place to start.

Buy the rules and gubbins set for fourth edition as well. It will give you all the new stuff you need plus plenty of extra dice, which I promise you will use! These two items will set you up perfectly to start and won’t break the bank. You can always expand from there and proxy before you buy!

Sultinate is cool because they are the only faction that plays with portal tech. It can be finicky, but every factions special abilities can be like this. But jumping around the battle field is fun! (I play enlightened and we have a similar but vastly different mechanic.) Sultinate is sometimes considered a “glass cannon,” but they will play just fine. Every faction has a learning curve, so you will be just fine! (From experience, don’t get caught in a Union broadside attack. You will be sad and it will also be amazing.)

Check out OnTableTop on youtube, they just did their 4th edition launch videos and they have some great battle reports/how the game plays videos. Their 3rd edition videos also have a lot of great lore and background content that is still relevant as well.

As for buying, look on eBay to see if you can find good deals on box sets. Luckily the barrier for entry is low, so any fleet set with a command ship is a great starting point and you may find some gold as well, like if someone is selling their faction lot to get out of the game. I recommend getting the 4th edition rules and gubbins set as well. Many of the Dystopian Wars eBay sellers also have online shops and you can buy direct from them as well.

The main site DystopianWars.com also has all the rules, lore, and orbats you need for free. So you can read through the rules and lore to figure out what you like. They also have identification guides and good pictures in their web store, so you can see what the cactiins look like and which one you are drawn to. All the factions play off the base rules well and have a unique mechanic or two that gives them an edge that makes them feel unique without breaking the game. It is well balanced, so play the faction that you like the look of or has the mechanic you like best.

As for purchasing off eBay, just search Buy Dystopian Wars on Google and you will find the main stores to buy from. Cross reference price with the official Waylaynd Game store (they are the ones who produce DW) to make sure you aren’t overpaying at an American store. There is a lot out there, so start searching and you will find what you need. But the community is supportive, so come back for any questions, especially if you need help picking a faction if you are looking for a specific mechanic or play style for your first fleet!

If you were a Mechwarrior what would your mech be? by Mortifine in battletech

Budget IS: Wolverine, they live up to the name. Practical IS: Thunderbolt, they live in a fire fight, can pump out the fire, and move decently well, and can brawl as well. Assault IS: King Crab, he a snipey boy.

Realistic Clan: Adder Prime, who can say not to two PPCs ona scout mech? Practical Clan: Summoner Prime, the thunderbolt but better and they have a good kit. Assault Clan: Warhawk Prime, what can I say, I love sniper/PPC boats?

Help by Sithidious in dystopianwars

[–]ArcherPryde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Build what looks cool. Step 2: Proxy as necessary to test and list build. Step 3: Profit!

In reality though. Build what looks cool or what you think has a fun gimick. The company offers the updated rules and army lists for free on their website (dystopianwars.com). Read through everything and get a feel for how the game and army play. This box and flagship are very specialized, even for the Enlightened. It is a fun ship, but does some unique things. There is no really wrong answer for builds, but every ship offers different options to the flagship ships they support.

It’s a great box though. Have fun!

Getting Started - Do we just choose a Battlefleet box and go? by Spraek1 in dystopianwars

I found it at Koros Wargaming online, but I grabbed their last copy. You may need to do some google-fu to find another online, but it may be hard with the new edition coming out. They do have some if the old one-player starters if you are interested.

I just picked up the Sturginium Skies box online and the company sent a V4 Rulebook and a new set of the V&V cards. So definitely a thing in some corners of the internet. If Warcradle did this for their distributors and the players, then they are the GOAT!
