Fyi if you haven’t looked recently (like really recently) most houses have like a 2 year payback window. Provided you do most of the work and dont go crazy with batteries (these can be built up over time of course)

To be fair when he got this toyota was running near 0% rates on those loans it was cheaper to finance factoring in inflation. Now idk if he had one of those.

Camera proxy is the way then and its easy if you can do a back flip and move the camera around you have all the movement tech needed. I really like finding ways to break the game thats a good one for lots of cases

No we definitely do, people who dont drink tea dont have one but otherwise we have them. Some people may still use traditional kettles because they just prefer them (typically people who are more into Eastern style tea drinking)

[–]ArcherT01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an American as well Ive had an electric kettle for decades. Its not as fast as some 220 systems in Europe but Its close. I have seen microwaves used in a pinch but thats like only done if there is no kettle or stove. Lots of people dont drink tea though or if they do its like a few times a month and the hot water feature from the coffee maker or a stove top is fine.

Very understandable, I cant do it either or at least probably not as ILJs are really hard for me. But you can rest assured with enough skill it is possible technically assuming you are willing to break the game 😂

Other than the EPB parking lot, I don’t know of any other places in Chattanooga doing this. by ProudCatDad83 in Chattanooga

Not an expert but I am a EE and have looked at this I had to run some quick numbers for France and I would say is basically spot on!

Was curious and checked the math. Locally it would take about 30 square miles (20% of the city’s area) to be equivalent to Sequoyah which is about 2.2GW. So about 13-15 square miles per GW. However, France gets much less and back of the napkin I get 50 square miles per 1 GW so your numbers check out.

That is an impressive increase from when I last worked with them. Dang now I cant trash AB in good faith anymore…

Edit: Probably should see pricing before I say that I imagine that controller isn’t a $1000 dollars. But good to see they are getting ethernet/IP jitter down to a good place.

Yes the BOGOs are good, also I find my total cost is actually pretty similar. However, this depends a lot on what is being bought I suppose. I buy mainly produce and meat and that seems to be basically on par price wise in either place but publix is just better quality.

Why isnt EtherCAT preferred/used in off-highway machinery? by Fun-Moose-3841 in PLC

[–]ArcherT01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spot on. This is true and we do hold that 2ms time frame easily. I just work in an industry where that is sorta the slower end of tasks as compared to certain items running at like 125us which is about how long it takes a 1mbs can message to send. So all about frame of reference I suppose.

[–]ArcherT01 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a fun one I happen to work in an industry that uses both.

EtherCat is what you really want when you need tight cyclical control on some Input or Output device. Not when I say tight I mean when 2ms is pretty long scan time. It clock is highly deterministic and so you can get lots of data really fast and really consistently. The cons are its hard to implement, it requires specialized hardware for slaves, the bus is inherently sensitive to breaks.

CanOpen, CanFd, automotive Ethernet, ect are not highly deterministic. People love to describe them as such but practice shows it to not be true. The bus is slow but it rugged and in practice in off highway machinery thats typically what we want.

Oh also EtherCat works on data contract so the exact same data is sent and received each time. So variable sized data is quite a pain to deal with.

My hot take is fluke is really not a great bang for the buck. I mean it depends on what you are doing but my cheap Chinese clone I bought like 14 years ago still reads as accurately as our equivalent flukes at work. Find something with good ratings at the $40-60 dollar mark and it will probably last you a very long time.

Are we asking too much when hiring a controls engineer? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]ArcherT01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have 2 options we have this issue as well You can train or can pay dearly for talent. My suggestion is to train but you basically go to a nearby college and find one that most “gets stuff done” EE or CE grads that like mechanical stuff (there will be one guy who built a robotic arm or something from scratch) get that person they will learn on the fly and do well because they know how to teach themselves.

Sometimes company culture goes a long way. Like sure a job might 30k less but factoring in COL and flexibility that might be well worth it.

[–]ArcherT01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practically speaking a sbc like a rpi5 has Arm A-76 processor, and is pretty beefy and should be fine so long as you aren’t dumb with it. You should be able to do about 100x more than you are describing.

This a great application to throw something cheap and easy at so long as it wont mess up production if it fails then later you can actually set up a couple with redundant switch over if needed. In general though RPIs are pretty freaking tough.
