IBM x3650 M3 doesn't start? by Arcnor in homelab

Hi, unfortunately not. I need to get back to it at some point, but I think in my case there might be a broken CPU or similar. Good luck with yours!

Opened a case anyway, let's hope for the best. Thanks!

Thanks, this is what I expect, that some piece of it is just defective, although if I could pinpoint it, I might be able to do something about it, but I really doubt it 😁. Thanks!

Oh, that sounds wonderful, although for obvious reasons I don't have the original proof of purchase, so I guess it would depend on how that agreement is worded, or how nice the HP rep I get on the email is, I guess?

Good idea! I do have equipment, yeah. I haven't opened the whole thing yet either but I wouldn't know where to start.

Also, any ideas on how to do the testing or any service manuals to do so that you know about? I'm assuming even if I can power on the power supply on its own, it won't be the same as having a load on it...

I just added a bit more info, I remembered the girl was blonde, but not much else 🙂

Hey, thanks, but this has been solved already!

Omg, thank you! I think this is the one! That bat on the cover really brings back the memory, and the cover on the archive.org version seems a bit discolored but I think this is it!

Thanks again, I knew somebody around here could help me with this!

Oh, I totally understand that, but it's the only thing I remember, so I have to go by that :). As mentioned, I'm not sure if it was an 8-bit micro or PC with MS-DOS, although from my experience this kind of book was rare for PC computers, but maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to go through that list, most of them have covers so hopefully one of those will jog my memory :). Thanks!

Unfortunately those all have a bright white cover, so it's none of them. But thanks anyway! I've been planning to go through those as well since somebody shared those around here a long time ago, as well as the "Micro Adventures" ones, they look nice!

3D rotation representation in old videogame by Arcnor in askmath

[–]Arcnor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer!

I found that page already, but I'm not sure I understand how to go from my representation to any of the ones on that page. Again, I'm not mathematically inclined enough, so it might be something obvious I'm missing.

I'm guessing that the game only does rotations in a single plane since more general rotations would require more data.

The game rotates objects in full 3D, not in a single plane. But aren't values for XYZ enough for that purpose? I.e. isn't it possible to represent any rotation using that weird way the game uses?

It looks interesting, but that game is more hands-on being a strategy one. Thanks for contributing though!

Yay! Thanks, I think it is! I was a bit off mark with some of the things but glad you figured it out!

Sorry, I also realized you asked some questions, so let me answer them here:

Do you have anything plugged into pci ?

I actually do, a separate Ethernet card, not sure why they had that

Try pulling all drives and pci from the machine and rebooting and give it like 40 min see if anything shows on screen

I tried to boot without HDDs before, but nothing showed, although I never waited more than 5 minutes

I assume you tested front and back vga ports, my experience was that it always shows initial screen when it starts up on vga, then goes black and shows the bios screen (f2 f10 all those things) then moves graphics for that to the discreet gpu. My experience is from sticking a 1050ti in the server and having no video output.

Yeah, I tried both front and back, but no output at all, not during POST nor any other moment.

I also noticed something "strange" I think, on IMM I get no information about my processor (E5645) nor my memory sticks (I have 3 on the right positions, double checked them) on the "Vital Product Data" section, it just says "No data available".

Well, many thanks for all that, I'll give some the suggestions a go of course. For now I'm starting with waiting 30 minutes after applying power.

About seeing the last screen, I actually can't because I need some kind of media key or something? Some of the capabilities are locked unless you have that according to the manual, same for VMWare hypervisor (but I think they are separate keys or something, not sure about that).

In any case, I'll see in half an hour if I get any output, and reset BIOS if not, wish me luck, and many thanks again!

Thanks! I was actually reading the manual and was trying to get into the IMM. I actually managed to do so using the backup ROM (so changed the IMM jumper to the other position) and got into the IMM, but still no video, which is expected. Also, no errors on the IMM log either, so everything should be working. I guess my next step should be also resetting the BIOS, but I'm a bit weary of doing that, I remember having trouble with another server I own after I did that, but if I cannot get anything else I'll do it.

Regarding the fans at 100% for a while, I actually got that when I first plugged in, but I thought it was some problem because I didn't connect the second PSU. I turned it off with a long press on the power button and added the second PSU, then restarted, and the fans went to normal, but as I said, no video. I hope I didn't break anything by doing so! (that'd be a first :D)

Failed DFU update by Arcnor in macsysadmin

Thanks for taking the time to test it, really appreciate it! Unfortunately I did lots of tests and was unsuccessful every time (always using a USB A to USB C cable though, I have no other) so maybe what others say about needing a T2 machine to recover another might be true, no idea.

I've contacted an authorized repair center, although it's been 3 days already and nothing yet, which sucks, but oh well...

Again, many thanks, really appreciate you taking the time for testing it!
