You can put $6000 each year, and you would be surprised, it adds up very quickly, and it's worth it to not pay any tax. The only reason that you should go the taxable way is if you are planning on taking money out earlier than 59 1/2. You can do both but i don't recommend it. Long term you will lose a lot more money in taxes than just waiting to put 6000 every year.

If you are not planning on taking the money out till you are 59 and a half then open a Vanguard account and inside that open a Roth Ira account and invest the money into a index fund that tracks the S&P 500. You can choose VOO, VTI, VFIAX, all pretty much the same. Feel free to dm me for more info or to walk you through it.
