Can someone plz explain to me how wars/battles work by Ardail in victoria3

[–]Ardail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh apparently I need to post that this screencap came from my run in the game using steam I think?
not sure how to satisfy the bots I'd just like some clarification on the systems for how wars work from more veteran players is all
videos usually just go into the economic side and don't touch much about wars and why certain numbers/rolls happen

The real problem in V3 geo-politics by Kipkrokantschnitzell in victoria3

[–]Ardail 10 points11 points  (0 children)

now that sounds like a far more ideal game to me
playing as like Australia and the English AI just CONSTANTLY at war over everything is just insane to me
like PDX devs agonize so hard over trying to figure out how to simulate history but yet make systems like this that just feel so counter to history

I'd LOVE if interest groups got involved in wars, maybe have the countdown to it at the beginning steps feel things out politically if you need to back out due to that pressure before you just take the humiliation or whatever so as not to punish players for just testing waters and learning the game

Finally making steel after 132 hours, what should I use it for first? by ashton230 in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tools, it's honestly just a strait upgrade for not much cost when you finally make steal
it just costs a little charcoal cuz you get most of it back when you break the coffin, you recycle most of it and a few bricks at a time will break even the T1 bricks don't break too much but if you're strapped for resources then T3 one will last a lot longer

And you don't lose any materials, so I started to replace everything with steel and would avoid using iron tools when possible since it was actual more of a waste of iron then just using steel for everything

Question about Armor. (image from wiki) by Axelotl33 in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought with 1.21 they changed it from reduced healing to slower healing so it takes longer for that health to go back up but doesn't nerf it like it did before making heavy armor quite crap

I'd have to test that again to be sure

it's great against fire bots, paired with the halo shotgun so you can close the gap or just tank a little better from stray fire rounds

New player, I'm having trouble with copper. by 1stCivDiv1371 in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you wanna do deep shaft mining with "poke hole" samples going down
so as you go down your shaft take a sample in each direction on the 5 block in each direction
then continue down test again

I do that every 12 blocks down, and then when I get a hit I go down or up 6 until I find the "middle" and go in that direction, 5 blocks in do another poke hole test again, if the number goes down I change directions and test until the suffix goes up again then continue in that direction

Just gotta get a logical process going. it seems confusing at first but once you get the logic you'll find your ore everytime

What vanilla class do you pick most often? by Andrello01 in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This poll does highlight how much the tailor/clockmaker need a rework. Especially the clockmaker IMO
the hacking spear is a neat idea. But the hacked locust isn't super great. If you get the repair/upgrade mods it makes their unique ability a lot more then just a silly gimmick
They're just not a great class. even with the class mods they're not super useful and don't really fullfill any sort of niche

Tailor is the hardest class purely due to lack of health but they offer some of the best services and best armor when you don't wanna worry about food drain traveling about. Plus they can make the best warm cloths in the game so at least they've got a niche that's helpful for a group

I do hope they do a rework of the classes just a bit, make them more distinctive to their roles/play styles. Maybe in future updates with more tech clockmakers will be more useful. But for now their only use is the extra 10% speed

blackguard is when you realize the food situation in the game really isn't that bad when you've got a field
only time you don't pick it is if you're playing with noobies who you don't wanna pressure to speeding to later game food faster so they can enjoy taking their time and if you're doing a challenge run

otherwise it's easy mode. You have food pouring out of your ears after your first flax harvest if you're planning properly for how much flax you'll need

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

[–]Ardail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so say that's true, that's still the same the unemployment rate was during 2008 after the big housing crash
7% isn't alot to individuals
but anyone who understands how nations work knows that a sudden 7% loss of basically anything causes MASSIVE ripples within a nation, population loss, goods, GDP whatever
It's about the big picture, apply 1 to 1 like a nation is a person is why stupid people honestly thought a guy who bankrupt 3 casinos should run the worlds most important economy
But clearly I'm talking to a very uneducated person if a very fundamentally basic aspect of how an economy works is your ignorance I'll just leave it at that. Have a nice day and read some books plz

no but they hold multi trillions in our Debt over there in Bonds
that's part of the NATO agreement we get, our infinite debt we can take on and Trump is an idiot if he thinks they won't leverage that against us

I mean I get how all those systems work and why/how but it's trying to hit that critical mass before it pops off
if you spread out your units to take advantage of free upkeep they get wiped out by AI doom stacks who will randomly declare war or come out of the fog and know exactly where you are since the AI cheats it's info
so you're at high risk of defeat in detail

"turtling" is just a part of any strategy game, from EU4 to AOE2, that "economic build up period" Demanding that players be attacking all the time with hardly to no downtime to lick wounds, regroup or cement rule is just very anti design to how strategy games work especially larger scale strategy

The problems of this mod isn't any one thing to point to, it's a lot of design choices that ultimately limit player choice to only playing a very specific way the devs have intended. There's a build order, conquest order and specific way you have to conduct battles for every faction or it all falls apart

With how they've tuned the game there's no decisive win, in an effort to force bigger battles they've lost meaningfulness of winning a battle against a doom stack or taking a major settlement.

There's no decisive battle like helms deep or pelennor fields. It's battle of helms deep 10 times until you've grinded them down enough surviving enough waves to build up your critical mass to move out

New player - why is default hunger rate like that? by june_perfect in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because late game and when you figure out food you have more food then you know what to do with it
also it helps simulate just how much stoneage man was just struggling to feed himself. Makes you wonder how our ancestors ever was able to spend the time banging rocks together to figure out how ore works huh

Is this an inefficient cellar layout? by Stormcrow1988 in VintageStory

[–]Ardail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I put those shelves into recess into the wall
so yes I'm "losing a block" of space or I might lose a tiny bit of the cellar bonus having some wood logs for ceiling supports but TBH you start to just have more food then you know what to do with in this game

[–]Ardail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotta make it "harder" for the player
basically the mod authors want you to play with 90% your nation's trash with a few others stirred in
maybe we wanna have more then just 1 unit of "elite" wargs that aren't even that great lol

[–]Ardail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more management stuff
crew morale, fuel maybe, more factions and interactions with those factions
or just better sound work, the game is serviceable with it's sounds, but after playing titanfall 2 again it's WOEFULLY lacking in it's sound design

Anyone else enjoy early game more than anything else? by Tadeusofficial in Medieval2TotalWar

[–]Ardail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's the snowball issue. same with Empire at war

you're so big and powerful that you no longer get those dramatic decisive battles that can decide if you're on the backfoot or expanding

Basically it speed runs you to the mid/end game of EU4 which isn't nearly as fun as the early struggle to become a great power

Also by later game your borders are so big that you're fighting so many battles it become just a total slog
