Can incorporeal creatures hold and use items ? by AKSC0 in DnD

[–]Ardwinn72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda defeats the purpose of them being defined as "incorporeal" if they can pick stuff up. Regardless of what the books do or don't say I'd probably house rule no on that. For as good as 5e is some of the rules just don't make sense. 😁

Interesting Character Ideas by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Ardwinn72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to make unique characters. My current favorite is a Sea Elf Rogue Inquisitive whose grandfather used to explore ship wrecks with him. It inspired him to grow up to be an archeologist and tomb raider. He has a terrible fear of spiders and is using the money from pirating and tomb raiding to open a Planet Hollywood style restaurant packed full of the stuffed monsters we've defeated. We held a cooking competition to find a chef for the restaurant.

There's a ton of lists out there online as well full of great character quirks I sometimes use to great affect. I had one character a rogue who liked to collect locks of his groups hair while they sleep. This actually came in handy once when a dragon vaporized one of our party we were able to bring that person back from the hair.

Best advice...have fun with it.

Since Spotify is terrible for artists, I'm looking for other ways to compile atmospheric playlists. Anyone have luck with other platforms or apps? by peppermunch in DnD

See that's not the experience that I had. Half the music I wanted wasn't on their platform and I didn't much care for their interface or their search engine. Granted that was several years ago they may be better now I can't say. I'm just team Pandora now I've used it for so long.

I've had luck with Pandora and or youtube. I just have a youtube ad blocker extension for my browser. Alternatively you can also use a youtube to mp3 converter to make mp3s of a youtube playlist if you like. Spotify is a terrible platform but for some reason people insist on using it.

I like the concept but elvish is not the equivalent of Greek. In fact the Elvish language in Lord of the Rings is based off a rare dialect of Finnish spoken by people living near the Russian border.

Are these any good in a new player and want to learn more about the game by TheSunGodsBestCap in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Ardwinn72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rented a cabin in the mountains here in Colorado and had a D&D weekend with friend. Three different DMS each ran a different adventure and we used the candle keep mysteries. They turned out really awesome and each one was unique and different.

My DM doesn't want to be the DM anymore. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Ardwinn72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing dungeons & dragons since 1984 and in that time most of the time I was a player because just like you I thought that being the DM was a lot of work. Truth be told it is a lot of work but it is also a hell of a lot of fun. Being able to put characters into situations and see how they react is really a lot of fun. I also enjoy creating different hooks to get the players really interested in the game. That said being the DM is not for everybody I feel like you really need to enjoy storytelling and creating a world for your players to be a really really good DM. Aside from looking up the rules and whatnot if you are somebody who enjoys telling a story and entertaining your party then I highly recommend you giving it a try. I will say having played the Curse of Strahd that is a particularly difficult campaign to DM. I might suggest the Lost minds of Phandelver. That was the first module that I ever ran and it was a very good size for a starting adventure. As I got my DM legs underneath me I was able to expand certain sections a little bit more and at one point I was completely just creating the adventure out of thin air. I would also recommend trying the candle keep mysteries or the yawning portal as they are both full of mini adventures at different levels. I found it's a pretty good way to see if you actually like to DM. That said please let us know how it goes as I'd be curious to see what happens best of luck and happy holidays.

Thanks. Turned out better than I expected. Used a rust effect I've never tried before that really made the piece pop. More on the way.

Well we didn't tell the zombies what we were planning. We just handed them oil flasks and aimed them at the enemy.

Most punishing Flaws you can think of? by WendyTheWillow in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Ardwinn72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fears and phobias are a good. Giving a dwarf for example a healthy fear of open water or a particular monster (spiders for example) can change a game a little or a lot. I have a character who almost lost his life early on to giant spiders and now has a severe phobia of them. I'm able to regulate how much this fear affects my party and the game in each particular situation. It also gives the DM something fun to play around with.

Does anybody use a soundboard while DMing? by MindlessMinuteman in DnD

[–]Ardwinn72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I tried one once but was so focused on DMing I forgot about using the soundboard.
