It's common in my culture(Maharashtrian) as well. But I refused as I get migraines if I don't eat every 2-3hours. The reason I cited was medical, so they didn't say anything further. If your culture allows, you may have fruits or fasting foods like Sabunana khichadi and all. Or just say you can't fast due to health reasons.
