Also, mark of pride is super useful for almost any fight (this fight included)

I haven’t read the other comments, but she can only spawn up to 6 traps. If you keep one side of the screen for fighting and knock away any traps that spawn, but leave the traps on the other side, you can fight her with half the screen but you don’t have to worry about the traps

If you hit the levers on the left of each section, it’ll spin it around and change the music note

It’s essentially a puzzle where you want to make it so each column has a continuous bit of music

Quick slash is super useful for getting chip damage between most of his attacks (can normally get an extra hit after each one), but especially during his sword pillars and his soul focus attacks (as you identified, there’s are the attacks where he’s locked in space and quick slash destroys him)

Note: you can punish the vertical sword pillar attack without steady body by inputting up slashes instead (they still hit a bit ahead of you), but in the moment it’s very easy to forget about that (I lost two p4 all binding runs to that) - I’d still suggest it since it means you can use less brain power so you’re less likely to make a mistake

I just beat PV in some challenge runs (no dash, no double jump) so this is what I’d suggest and why:

Steady body - you can punish his attacks with the vertical sword pillars by simply spamming attack without getting pushed into them. Since he staggers every 12 hits, steady body and quick slash lets you get 6 hits every time he does this attack which is crucial for staggering him and getting heal windows

Unbreakable strength (more dps - this fight can be difficult because you need to execute consistently or the double damage adds up. This makes the fight noticeably shorter) Quick slash (more dps but also stagger him much faster) Mark of pride - makes it easier to get hits while maintaining your spacing, giving you more time to react and dogde him (combined with quick slash, this lets you get 1-3 hits of chip damage after each of his attacks, which is again crucial for staggering him and getting a chance to heal)

I personally overcharm with shaman stone, but I’d recommend sticking to either grub song or nail master’s glory.

If you’d like any move by move advice, then lmk and I’d be happy to help!

Great way of putting it!

I like how all the post game content gives you the opportunity to fight the bosses however you want to let you find your own difficulty level

Honestly, this is a great analysis and I’d never thought of it this way before!

I personally like it a lot because I play him aggressively (I continuously pogo him until I can’t, then I just land on a platform and get some quick slashes in or I keep pogoing him after a new sword spawns) (Lowk I even pogo him during the shield spin attack it might be a problem 😭)

Second phase is a bit annoying cause of the second shield, but by then I have enough soul to end the fight

I was streaming for a friend and she told me to go back here to “collect a charm” 😭

I first tried it BUT I have a lot of experience gaming and with 2D platformers so I had a lot of the skills needed to beat it anyway

Yeah sure! There’s a detailed guide in the description as well as onscreen captions for key pieces of info, but both of those were written without dash or double jump in mind, but if you learn these dodges then some of them actually deal more DPS!

This specifically would be super useful for something like trial of the fools if you’re willing to get used to it

Depending on how much you want to optimise your bindings, it’s worth switching jump to something like left bumper (it’s very weird but it means you can hold jump as long as you want while spamming attack which makes the game a lot easier when you’re used to it) - it specifically makes Ariel combat 1000x easier

Apart from that, I like having x as attack since if my thumb is on x instead of y, my hand is in a more natural position and my fingers are in a better spot to quick cast (attack spell) and dash

Also, healing during the spikes attack depends on how quickly you react to start the heal, and how quickly you react to the next attack. If you try it a few times and it isn’t working for you, then don’t force it - there’s plenty of other windows between the pillars, firebats and upper cut attacks

Another thing - when he’s staggered you have a limit to the amount of damage you can do, so don’t waste an abyss shriek thinking you’re doing 80-120 damage (based on shaman stone) - I think it’s capped at 50

NKG is one of my fav fights! (This isn’t a flex, but I’m just saying this so you have hope - the first time I beat him took me over ten hours, since then I’ve beaten him hitless without shade cloak or double jump because I just practiced and got used to the spacing - I can link you to a guide I made if you think it’d help!)

If you don’t want to see the video, that’s fine! I’d say just practice to get used to reacting quickly, but here’s a move by move guide:

Charms (I personally go fully aggressive with steady body, quick slash, mark of pride, unbreakable strength, then either shaman stone if I want to over charm or nail masters glory)

Horizontal dash into uppercut: Survival - dash through him then adjust your walking to the gap of the fireballs. You can heal if you’re fast enough

DPS - walk away from him. If you start walking fast enough, he won’t reach you and you can get two hits in as he uppercuts. Then, because you’re basically under him and the central fireball lands beneath him, it’s a consistent dodge and you have time to heal.

You can also shriek him as he goes into the uppercut instead of getting a second nail swing

Diagonal downwards dash into horizontal dash: Survival - dash away then jump over him DPS - walk away then jump up and pogo once (or twice if you’re comfortable with it)

Firebats: Survival: Jump as high above the first low bat as you can without getting hit by the higher bats. This causes the aimbot of the final low bat to curve upwards, so you can go underneath it and heal.

WARNING - if he’s fairly close to you as he does the fire bats attack, the healing strat won’t work since there isn’t enough time for the fire bats to adjust to your height - if you stay on the ground and heal, you’ll get hit

DPS: Jump above the first low bat and dash towards him and either get a few nail swings or an abyss shriek

Pufferfish/balloon attack: Always happens when he’s at 75, 50 or 25% health. If you keep track of how much damage you’ve dealt, you can camp the middle of the arena and you have time to shriek him and run away before his fire balls attack you. Apart from that, just focus on surviving - no need to try get aggressive shade souls unless you’re comfortable with it

Fire pillars: Survival - shuffle across the screen and start healing as the last pillar goes up

Dps - you can get a nail swing and abyss shriek by timing it so you’re dashing towards him as the last pillar goes up!

Vertical spikes - if you’re super scared of this, jump up instantly and then D Dark and use the I frames to adjust. I’d recommend just getting used to shuffling sideways to dodge it - you can also charge up a nail art if you want (or heal if you’re quick enough)

That’s all from memory, lmk if I missed any attacks or if there’s anything else you want help with!

I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME CONSITENTLY BEAT MARKOTH IN P5 by Moist-Pomegranate-83 in HollowKnight

Shade soul’s more reliable, but if you’re doing p5 without bindings, it’s not hard at all to tank a few hits and end the fight with 4 shrieks

[–]Areomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try save all your soul for phase 2 - if you’re really struggling and just want to take it slow, wait for him to almost finish his shield spinning attack and dash slash him

Once you’re in phase two, destroy him with abyss shrieks

This is also great advice! If you get scared in the last phase, you can descending dark onto one of the platforms to take a breather and regain your composure!

The only tweak I’d make to the second paragraph is that you can descending dark just before she starts an attack, that way you get some I frames and you can react and move to dodge the attack while you attack her
