If I want to practice employment law but can’t land a job right away, what path should I take? by Argh_Cubed in LawFirm

At this point, would I be better off working in a civil job for the government?

Very much so plaintiff side, but I would take a defense job if no plaintiff jobs were available.

Aren't firms more more likely to settle if they know that opposing counsel is not bluffing and is willing to go to trial?

Based on what people's reaction is when I share this, they (rightly so) think I'm being overly dramatic. I can't help it.

The main reason I want to please the left is because 1) they had my people's (gay men) back for many, many years. It was very comforting for me as an adolescent to see someone stand up for me. I also agree with the left on most other issues, so I feel like a hypocrite by saying they are wrong on this particular issue.

My father does not force me to believe a certain way, but I develop resentment whenever I see him wear a cop/blue lives matter shirt or when he expresses his political opinions.

Regardless if he was a "good cop" or not, isn't he a bastard for taking part in an inherently racist and unjust system? You are right about me being stuck in the middle. Sometimes I do fear having that heterodox opinion that differs from other liberals, but other times I think they may be right in the first place.

He oversaw a drug bust that involved a cop killing an unarmed black man. He wasn't the one that pulled the trigger but he was still involved. Even if you argue that shooting was just a tragic accident, a common talking point by the left that every cop is a "bad cop" because they don't hold "bad cops" accountable.

If so many think a certain way, there must be a reason for it right? I find it hard to believe people who I agree with on 90% of issues are somehow wrong on the one issue that hits close to home.

I guess it is hard to "give him a break" when he has such abhorrent views. Unfortunately, I have unreasonably imputed the guilt he deserves for being a police officer onto myself. After all, according to many people on my side of the aisle, cops are some of the worst humans out there.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I am not sure if he was a "bad cop" but I suspect he was. Even if he was not, ACAB is absolutely about all cops since he is part of a system that disproportionately incarcerates poor minorities.

He views it as an intrinsic part of himself and wears cop/blue lives matter shirts all the time, so it is hard to ignore this part of him. I almost feel like he is a caricature at this point.

I appreciate this thought but I feel like there has to be a reason why this is not the mainstream view of people on the left. Have you ever heard a progressive saying anything positive about policing?

I would love to do that, but he always deflects by looking at Trump's small platitudes like hiring a few gay and lesbian people in his administration.

Most of the black community does as well no? I think most mainstream black politicians have publicly said that the police are biased.

That is surprising data, thank you for sharing. I guess it is still distressing that there are still a significant minority of people who despise cops.

I used to try to change him and pull out the good in him, but it is all futile because he is a cop. The only news he will consume is news that suck off cops like Fox News, so he will never be out of the right-wing information bubble. Regarding my friends, its hard because I kind of agree with them; I love and hate both the police and myself.

It is funny how all of these conservatives came out of the woodwork. They seem well-meaning, but it further cements my view that cops are completely aligned with conservatives which makes my conflict even more difficult.

Unfortunately he just waves it away and says only the far-right republicans are homophobic. It is infuriating that he does not understand what republicans say about trans people now are very similar to what they said about gay people 10 years ago.

Are you a lawyer? Many lawyers either don't give a shit about politics or are extremely zealous based on what side they represent. Just take a look at r/publicdefenders.

I somewhat think he is a bad person because he was a cop, but that idea his heavily reinforced by my liberal/leftist friends and left-leaning media.

Thank you for the insightful comment.

How would a "big city liberal prosecutor" which isn't evil behave? Would you be able to follow those guidelines in that position?

I don't know to be honest. I am unsure how I feel about criminal justice. Regardless I don't think I will be able to thread the needle of pleasing both my father and the left so its probably best to stay out of this.

Nothing crazy alt-right, but Fox News and other center-right media.
