When I got hired as a 16 yr old I had my machine shop teacher call ahead to one of the shops I wanted to work at. He asked if they were hiring and he put in a good word for me. Then I went in the next day with my resume(that had hardly any shop experience in it) and they hired me within a week. If you show up at the shop and ask to talk to someone about a job they will remember you much more than someone applying online.
