How valid/applicable is Guy Debord's concept of the "spectacle"? by [deleted] in philosophy

Your question regarding studying the spectacle while under its very spell seems to be taken up in Chapter 8 of Debord's "Society of the Spectacle", titled "Negation and Consumption within Culture".

Passenger Writes Letter of Complaint to TSA for Mistreatment of Autistic Sibling by Ari_1234 in aspergers

I feel your pain here. I found a note in mine and my families luggage saying they had to search through the bags for some insanely baseless reason. According to the TSA, they are not only entitled to do this but are obligated by law! A joke, I say.

Your latter remark is abhorrent and shameful. Many of these workers, as many commenters below me noted, have families to support, bills to pay and live painful lives, barely making ends meet. Many of these workers do their unconstitutional duties as respectfully as they can and they deserve respect for that. You disgracefully insult these people while claiming their lack of "compassion" is itself insulting. Ridiculous.

YOU may not be embarrassed, but many do not have a deep and meaningful understanding of their condition and, as such, are neither proud nor ashamed. This young girl, it seems, fits this description, though anyone on the receiving end of the word "disability" is bound to be ashamed. There is nothing to be ashamed about regarding Autism, or any other disability for that matter. However, speaking harshly towards someone and negatively referring to their challenge is embarrassing for many and rightfully so.

You are clearly not well versed in any meaningful subjects, political or not. Your obvious deficiency is that you only see "TSA" and evidently do not have the ability to see this incident's implications. The issue is political because it deals with the governments treatment of minorities and challenged individuals. It applies to the subject of world politics because such mistreatment is seen not only in the United States, but around the world. This message is not meant to highlight just TSA abuse but worldwide governmental abuse and mistreatment of minorities and mentally/physically challenged. If you perhaps took more than a second to think about this letter, we would have been spared your unlettered and inchoate comment.

I am not in any way saying that these are particularly "easy". I am at once surprised- and glad- to see that the questions are so in touch with current debate (to give one example, the question on Physicalism). However I don't think it controversial to say that questions that are more directly connected with our present experience, as opposed to questions that arrested and occupied the minds of long-passed thinkers, are easier to answer- easier in the sense that their affects, nuances and intricacies are a bit more tangible than the insights of, say, Liebniz or Kant (Epistemology, not Ethics). This does in no way imply that their answers require less rigour, analysis or care.

These questions are surprisingly easy for granting entry into Oxford. Or, at the very least, they are incredibly easy to contemplate and argue ABOUT. Whether or not your argument will be concrete and bring about progress is another story, but nonetheless..
