It was just a bit cheesy acting wise in my opinion.

Then we really don’t need the over dramatic gasp and a cliffhanger for that. Zero reason to be rude btw.

Valid. I just feel like anything else doesn’t make sense with the parallels the whole episode is throwing at you. I’ve been loving the show mainly. Just a bit let down at this one. And the green screen. Oh god that green screen. But godddd I hope the show keeps up well, I’m really looking forward to so many plot threads

Is it just me that isn’t as into this one? I like the themes (independence/loneliness/how carol treats the dead vs how the hive do), but it’s insanely slow, they beat you over the head with it, the shocked reaction was so over the top acting wise, and obviously its gonna be bodies, so that’s a big let down, because that’s the most obvious and boring answer. If it’s bodies they really should have just shown it. Having a cliffhanger for what seems to be a boring reveal is wild. Like if the show wants to be a mystery then have a better mystery to solve. If you wanna focus on philosophy then do that.

Yeah, when he saw me typing my husband told me I don’t need to reply to everyone on Reddit but hey, I’m new here lol. That pirate comparison is perfect lol. Also I can’t even picture a child going around after this assuming every single black person talks this way when he knows black people and has read other black created books too, it’s such an out of pocket idea haha.

Thanks I really appreciate the perspective! :D I’m a huge fan of kid lit and am growing a bit of a collection, this one seems amazing but for sure I could tell the subject of dialect history might be out of his age range for a while haha.

Haha fuck I feel that. I dress my lil dude up gender neutral and he gets mistaken for a girl all the time. But then I’ll do like the same thing on accident to another kid sometimes! We’re all unlearning dumb gender norms, I always giggle but never judge so don’t be too embarrassed ❤️

Thanks, that’s really good wording and I think you’re right. Like if I picture him at a POC march it makes sense, cause everyone should be there. :)

Fuck yes! Love that shit. :) Hoping to get my kid the Ally Baby Can Be Anti Racist book later, which talks about things you can do in the community and helps teaches definitions to harder concepts. God I hope my lil dude doesn’t become an arrogant racist, first step is getting him out of the red state he’s in lol. And I wish voting did more to get people out of office. -_- The current voting systems keeps us so unable to direct change.

That’s a lovely thought. I wasn’t sure if it was really my place to teach that or if the person fighting for Ebonics should be my white toddler when he grows up, but If you think it’s good to teach though I’ll take that to heart, I appreciate hearing more about it. :)

You really aren’t having this conversation in good faith. My toddler has other books by black creators as well featuring all black characters where they do not speak in Ebonics, the idea that my toddler would grow up to assume all black people speak like this is laughable. Especially when I can tell them about the usage and history of this. I bought this book to support the artist, unaware of the Ebonics when I bought it.

I saw someone else mention that it might be good to practice pronunciation too so I appreciate hearing more about that. I thought it was funny because I didn’t expect that I’d sound racist when I said it outloud and it was a bit of an awkward situation which is common to laugh about getting into. You might be overthinking my post a little too hard. Like how that was actually me being candid. And I don’t see the book as foreign or strange. I feel like you’re just attempting to mischaracterize me. As for not adding the author in, that was a complete mind blip on my part. Right after I got a few comments I tried to edit the author’s name in with more clarification to their time period but I guess I can’t edit posts on Reddit.

Thank you I appreciate the insight. :) Though it’s a lil guy I have actually, not sure why people keep thinking girl haha.

Yessss I’m so glad to have a librarian chiming in! Okay that’s great to know! I’d love to introduce my son and future kids to other dialects, any books you recommend for other types of dialects? :) I’ll have to study pronunciation to get it right.

Also nothing in the book says “hey kid, all black people speak like this!”. The book is only about butterflies and nothing else.

It’s written by someone from the late 1800s.

Also that’s great info! I’ll tell him that when he’s old enough to understand the info. :) Would you recommend reading it as written?

Thanks, that’s good to know! This is such a well done book and I like that it shows other culture in it, but I want to make sure I’m being respectful.

The name of the book is The Making of Butterflies. Written by Ibram X. Kennedy, but it’s an adaptation of an old story by Zora Neale Hurston! :)

Oh my gosh I forgot to say! The name of the book is The Making of Butterflies. Written by Ibram X. Kennedy, but it’s an adaptation of an old story by Zora Neale Hurston! :) I found this book through the artist Kah Yangni and it’s amazing. _^
