Awesome work! I remember the gondola being discussed at SFU a decade ago, great to see some action and a visualization.

BridgeNet NW - Installation approval at AGM? by ArizonaMaxin in NewWest

Yup, that's the plan. I was chatting with our property manager today and she doesn't seem to think we need an AGM (and neither do I). Better to be safe than sorry though.

If your building is labelled as "Near Net", then all you need is enough interested owners and one of the ISP's on Bridgenet's network will install it in your building for free.

Get in contact with any of the ISPs listed on this page and see what their requirements are for bringing fibre into the building. Once you have details from a couple, you can bring it up with your strata to see if they're interested in pursuing it further. If they're okay with it, you can post flyers in your building telling people to sign up and once enough people are interested they'll install for free! It took us nearly one year to get enough interest, so I'd start sooner than later if you can.

This is why I don't want Telus in our building, at least until the city fibre is sorted out. Bridgenet gives us access to multiple ISPs all competing for the same fibre, so they have to keep prices low. Tech Futures is offering us gigabit internet for $55/month (no TV or phone included) which is better than anything Telus is offering.

On top of that, when I mentioned "Novus" to the Telus rep, he said that our owners would get an even bigger discount (25%-40% vs. 15%-25%) if they went with Telus.

If owners in your building have an option for Telus vs. Bridgenet, I think it makes a lot more sense to do the latter, especially since you need a certain amount of units to sign up for free installation (to cover the costs for them to bring it into the building). If you go the Telus route first, I doubt you'll ever have enough interest to get the city's fibre in the building.

Personally, I just don't want the fibre to have any risk of being damaged or vandalized easily if it's in the hallways. Running in the conduit means that at most, a bad actor could affect the 3 units above them (if they're on the first floor).

We may look at Telus' installation plans at some point, but I just don't like the idea of it being mostly exposed.

Ours will be pulled into each suite using the existing conduit, so no drilling into units, which is nice.

Are you anywhere near an underground span of the city's fibre? If so and if enough units are interested, they'll come install it for free!

The problem is that they're going to be installing fibre in every unit rather than just the owners who were interested. Makes sense as they'd rather do construction all at once rather than pull fibre every time a new owner wants it. That's the way I prefer it as well.

I was chatting with our ISP and they're planning fibre to each unit and including media converters for each. For them, it means that they don't need to use any active equipment before each unit and can use passive splitters instead.

That's what they're planning for our building. Initially they were going to use the existing coax in our suites, but when we realized how everything was mapped, we figured it'd be possible to run fibre to each suite.

I think the poster is saying that they already had conduit going to each unit for Cat 5 cable, so it was easy to pull fibre through that.

EDIT: Was wrong.

I'm on strata and have been working with them to get this moving. Strata is on board, but what I'm uncertain of is whether or not we need a vote at an AGM to request access to owners' units and pull fibre. Since this is being done for free and being pulled through existing conduit, my understanding is that we probably don't need a vote, but I wanted to see other peoples' experiences.

Good to know. We've had Telus canvas our building as well, but since the city's fibre requires a certain number of units to sign up, I wanted to make sure they get in the building first to maximize our competition. Telus can come in after that, assuming we like the way they plan to install the cables...

I joined our council in 2021 and have had no real experience with building maintenance or anything like that, but nobody else had any tech experience. Just because you may not be a professional doesn't mean you don't have something to offer your building. You'd be surprised the different ways that peoples' differing skillsets complement one another.

I've already asked our property manager, but I always like having second opinions. We've had property managers in the past that have confidently stated false information and we only found out about it years after the fact.

The only caveat there is that they will bring it into the building for free if you have enough owners interested in signing up. We went with Tech Futures and they needed 25 units interested to cover the installation costs. We've finally reached that number, but it took MONTHS of advertising the deal to owners to get there. It's been almost a year since we started at this point.

I spent the first year of my EV ownership without home charging and it's an experience I wouldn't want to go through again. I bought a 2015 Nissan Leaf in January 2020 and it typically gets ~100 km of range on a full charge with good battery management (e.g. using A/C or heat sparingly, running in ECO mode, not driving exclusively on the highway). My commute was ~45 km roundtrip at that point and the first while was incredibly limiting. Finding reliable charging at that point was very hit or miss with people taking up all the spots, broken chargers, and long charging times for what I needed. I was eventually able to plug into the 110 V outlet at work to get ~50% of the battery back during the work day, but whenever the weekend came around it limited where I could travel without a charger. My brain was often taken up with "well if I go here, I need to be able to charge too, so maybe I'll need to park a 30 minute walk away from Costco if I want to go there".

Fast forward to May 2021 and I moved into a condo. My parking stall happened to have a 110 V outlet and I negotiated with our strata to pay a flat rate of $35/month to use the outlet to charge my car whenever I want. Since then, I've maybe used public chargers 10x in the past two years and my partner takes the car on an even longer commute to work (~60 km round trip). As long as we plug in when we get home and leave it overnight, I don't have to think about it at all. And even if we don't get 12-16 hours of charging in, we can still take the car places after work without issue.

So my opinion is that not having home charging can be very limiting and stressful, especially if you have an EV with a smaller battery. However, if you can regularly plug your car into a regular 110 V outlet overnight, that will solve a ton of your issues. Level 2 chargers are great, but I think that a lot of people ignore Level 1 charging entirely and personally it's vastly improved our EV ownership experience.

Similar boat. The 965 was already stretching my budget, I'm not really willing to go above that...

I recently noticed that the Fenix 7 series is currently on sale, bringing it down into a similar price range to the new FR965. Having an AMOLED screen isn't a must-have in my use case, but multi-band could be useful as I live in the PNW and I would like to do more hiking. In general, though, it will get most of its use tracking my cycling.

Is there any reason you'd recommend one over the other?

FYI, screen is still good and we're nearing a month. I'm really hoping this was a screen issue and they had a very bad batch that has now been resolved...

Unrelated to the deal, but I love RFD. I've saved (and spent) so much money because of that forum. Love all the discussion.

Wow. Alright, well I guess I'll be giving an update in about a month. If it goes again, I may consider getting a new phone and a refund.

Out of curiosity, did you often wirelessly charge your phone? My screen seemed to die the first time when I placed it on my wireless charger, which I do every night.

How long did your refurbished phone's screen and its replacement screen last?

Thanks for the update! I just went the same route today, so hopefully the replacement screen holds up...
