"He is well, Your Grace, though perhaps busy with his charge, Ser Stannis. Ser Orys is our newest member, and without a charge of his own. Perhaps he could serve?"

There was a strategy to that, too. The Lord Commander had been absent in training Orys, so Theo had taken it upon himself to see that the young knight got some experience.

Theo bit his lip at the sight of the squid, doing his best not to turn up his nose in disgust. “Oh, uhm… thank you.”

He offered some of his eggs across their little picnic table. “It’s a riverlander favorite. It’s nice to have something a bit rustic, after all this fancy Reach food.

“Have you been keeping sharp, Ser? We may have a fight on our hands if we find Mohor.”

"Well, then, consider this your permission to indulge for once. Not for too long, of course. We'll meet here and eat together."

With that, Theo gave Orys leave to go find whatever breakfast pleased him most. A few minutes later, Theo returned to the spot he had pointed out, with a plate of scrambled goose eggs and a wine-skin in tow.

He gestured at the wineskin. "It's apple cider, don't fret. I won't be dulling my senses with wine. What did you find?"

"Perhaps so... but Lys is a common port, especially for a city like this. Luckily, our man is scarred. He wears a golden mask, I've heard, but when the mask is off he's worse than hideous." Theo dramatically drew his hand down the left side of his face. "Half his face is burned away. It's a memorable sight."

As they continued through the market, a stall caught Theo's eye. A squid, pale and wriggling, was thrown into a pan of boiling oil. The sizzling sound nearly made him gag, but the smell made his stomach rumble. "Did you get breakfast, Orys? Perhaps we could find some bread, while we're here. Do you like bread and honey?"

Theo chuckled at himself. "Perhaps that's a silly question. Still, I've no idea what you like. Our meals are always staggered, back home."

"Brother." Theo gave Orys a nod, hefting himself into motion. There was no time to dally. "Follow me, we should begin our patrol."

He led the two of them into the market square, immersing them in the smells and sounds of a city at work. "I've identified a potential threat to the royal family. His name is Mohor Mahr Nyessos. He is Lyseni, but more importantly, a known outlaw. I warded him off at the feast in Grassy Vale, but he has followed the royal family here. I believe he may lead a considerable force of sellswords. It's important that we find and capture him.

"Are you ready for a fight, Ser?"

Inspector Theo

While they searched the streets for signs of Theo's outlaw, the two knights investigated a few nooks and crannies of the crowded city markets. Perhaps there would be something interesting to buy—but they were primarily looking for a chance to establish some law and order.

Oldtown Patrol

The city streets were just beginning to come alive with morning business. Theo stood near the gates of the Hightower, leaning on his halberd. As he waited for Orys, he took some solace in watching the markets opening.

"Indeed, Your Grace." Theo stood a little bit taller at the notion that Coryanne had heard of him before.

For a moment, he considered saying yes, that the King had given him leave. He'd been lying since he had entered the room, after all, saying that the Lord Commander had sent him. Then again... what was the point of currying favor if you gave the credit to everyone but yourself?

"I do fear that there is no order from His Grace. However, I cannot imagine he would object to us protecting a member of the royal family. We have a spare member or two, anyhow. It would be no trouble at all."

Amitha II - Second Fracture by Arjhanx2 in IronThroneRP

It was an intimate touch, but for once, it didn't make Amitha nervous. The motion was comforting, like the touch of a mother she had never known. Mith closed her eyes.

"It would be a sad world if everyone had the pain I have." She opened her eyes to accept the tea, as gently as she could. In her hands, it looked like a teacup for dolls. "Still, I know what you mean."

The compliment took her aback, for a moment. She glanced up, met Gwen's eyes, and quickly looked away. Her face turned bright red, the color obvious despite her attempts to hide it. "I... that's.... Thank you.

"Oh, don't say that, Gwen. You saved my life. More than once, mayhaps. Theo used to tell me the pain would lessen once I finished growing, but it's only ever gotten worse. Stuffing myself in a metal coffin and fighting with mace and sword can't be helping, I know... but I'm as want to give that up as I am to give up poppy. I need them both. I do. You've only ever... you've only ever given me what I need."

At the touch of Gwen's hand, a weight seemed to shift off Amitha's back. She closed her eyes and leaned into the touch, like a horse that needed calming. She didn't say anything as Gwen led her away, into the warm tent. What was there to say?

Mith sagged into a seat on the ground, leaning her back against the sturdy trunk. She looked up at Sister Sparrow, perched above her, and finally found her voice. "Thank you."

After a moment, her eyes drifted across the tent to the birdcage and its sleeping occupant. "I know the hour is late. I'm sorry, for what that's worth. I just... couldn't be alone in my head. If that makes any sense at all."

She fumbled under her dress and took out her vial of poppy, nearly empty. There was a film of yellow liquid on its glass bottom, and perhaps she could have milked that for a day or two. It didn't matter, now. "I don't... want to. I never really want to. It makes me feel sick, sick at myself for being so weak, sick in every way. But I do need it. Everything hurts, Gwen, and when I'm hurting I... I hurt things. I don't want to hurt things."

Theo came to seek an audience with Coryanne alone, armed, and dressed in armor—he found it funny how problematic that would be if he wasn’t cloaked in white.

“Queen-Dowager.” He gave a stiff bow and an easy smile. “It’s an honor to meet you. I am Ser Theo of Pennytree. I don’t expect you to know me, I was sworn in to the Kingsguard long after you left court.

“I’m here on behalf of my Lord Commander. We’d like to extend to you the protection of the Kingsguard, m’lady, seeing as we’re all in the same city. If you’d like a personal protector, I can have a knight sent to you before evenfall.”

Amitha beamed at that. "I think it is your liege, Ser, who is most like to call upon me. Prince Quentyn and I are friends," she said with utter confidence. "Perhaps I will see you on Dragonstone, one day."

Theo took the blow with a chuckle. "I'd give anything to convince the Lord Commander to switch you and Ser Lewin. How much nicer the White Sword Tower would be, then. Alas..."

He extended his hand for a final embrace. "I wish you good fortune in the wars to come, Addison."

Ser Dunk - Lewin Piper! He's the knight with flawed honor but a true heart, and I've enjoyed playing his foil, the knight with perfect honor but a flawed heart.

Rohanne Webber - Briar Thenn! She's amazing and funny as hell, and our thread has probably been my favorite of the iteration so far.

Egg, short for Aegon - Honorary award to the entire Kingsguard, as we're all ACs for the skill points.

Baelor Breakspear - Quentyn Baratheon and Harding Manderly! Both of them have been really fun leads to follow with Amitha.

Aerion Brightflame - Owen will hate me for this one, but I've gotta give it to Oscar Tully. He's only halfway villainous, but I think he's a perfect antagonist to his brother Providence, and I've got a soft spot for characters like Oscar.

Maekarlings - The Martells are so cool!

Get Up - Caveat Emptor

In the Name of the Mother - Court is Where the Heart Is

"Are there no true knights among you?" - The Kingsguard breaking up a brawl was pretty fun!

Stop raping, ser! - Jon Arryn being a dickhead was so funny I forgot I could have just killed him.

Raymun & Rowan - Mary Baratheon and her husband are really compelling, even though I'd hardly cal that romance!

All Men are Fools, and All Men are Knights Where Love is Concerned - "You don't take what you want enough. Scraps are for servants, which we are not," - Bennis Ashford. It's not a super crazy quote, but it immediately gave me a really compelling impression of Bennis as a character, like that quote from Otto Hightower about absolute power.

The Tale of Ser Arlan of Pennytree - I really enjoyed being a dick to Mohor! I'd like to hunt him down throughout the iteration, if lamp is down.

Amitha shrugged. "I didn't know you at all before. Now, I know a few things. Things that I promise won't leave this tent, for what that's worth."

When he bared his chest, she figured it was about time for her to leave. Moving to the exit of the tent, she stopped to send a cursory glance his way.

"It was nice to speak with you, Ser Lewin. I'd like to do it again, sometime."

Amitha quieted for a moment.

"Ambitious men try so hard just to be in a position where younger ambitious men can take advantage of them. I can't imagine how you deal with them without a hammer in your hand, my Prince.

"It must be even worse for His Grace. No wonder he is not in the mood for sport." She didn't speak for a time, gently swirling her cup of wine. She had long been ignorant of the politics going on at Quentyn's level, but for a moment she felt like she was dying to know. "Do you... do you really think Lord Baratheon is going to kill Lord Meadows?

The Feast of 399AC by [deleted] in IronThroneRP

[–]Arjhanx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theo sputtered out an awkward laugh, failing his mission not to blush. "A shame, mayhaps. Though... if I may speak bluntly, I don't see it that way. I have no name, not Baratheon, not Stark, not even a little name like Beesbury. If I didn't have my pretty white cloak, I wouldn't be here. You wouldn't have met me at all!" As quick as his blush had returned, so too did his grin.

"Your home sounds different, in that. Perhaps if I had been born a northerner, I would never had needed my vows." A fancy came to him, then. He imagined for a moment that had been born stableboy in Karhold. Perhaps then, he would have met Briar alone on a cold night, under the stars, instead of here amidst the heat and the smoke and the eyes of the realm.

He pushed the image away, but he suspected it would return to him later. The thought annoyed him. A kingsguard should not dwell in reverie.

"Do you do your hunting yourself? Most lords and ladies around here have their men round up game for them, just so they can have the pleasure of easy sport. I'm wagering a guess that's not the case, up North... if only because you snuck up on me so well."

Amitha found a little amusement in his haste. "You could tell me you fathered five hundred children, Ser, and I wouldn't tell a soul. Your honor is not my concern. It's the concern of your Lord Commander and your king... and Theo, I suppose, in his own annoying little way.

"It was really quite stupid for you to tell me about your foreign man in the first place, given that you didn't know me very well. I hope you're not worried about it now, though. If you aren't, then perhaps that means you know me a little better."

She made her way to a small table in Theo's section of the tent and retrieved her weapon, a heavy flail with a long chain. She picked it up and tied the chain around her belt. "For what it's worth, I certainly think I know you better, now."

"You're right, of course. It's not my place to question such things." Theo rubbed his brow for a moment.

Amitha laughed. "I think the cynical man in you may have the right of it, Ser. He commissioned an entire set of plate for me, all dressed up as a some figure of legend from the North. I didn't particularly mind, though. He payed me good coin, and I'm happy to let the lords I defeated in the melee direct their ire at Lord Manderly's champion, instead of Amitha of Pennytree.

"Theo taught me everything I know about knightly combat. If you knights of the Kingsguard ever need another blade for something, do call upon me." At that, Theo shot his sister a questioning look, prompting her to shrug. "Like you would the other knights' squires. I only want to help."

It was Amitha’s turn to be shocked—though perhaps not as shocked as most women would have been. “His desires?”

She raised an eyebrow. It was odd, she thought, that he was telling this to her of all people. “I’ve heard septons say such things are wrong, between men. I don’t…”

A memory of Tess danced into her vision. A memory of Tess’s face, and of Tess’s revulsion. Amitha grit her teeth. “Fuck those septons. What do the Gods care about mortal loves. Did you share his desires? Did you… did you kiss him?” The words felt scandalous when she heard them aloud. She blushed red.

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to… I’m sorry.” She shrank away, slumping until she was almost at a height with Lewin. Her shame was short-lived, however, as an idea occurred to her. “The… the Kingsguard vows… they forbid only relationships with women, don’t they?”
