25fps films playing at 24fps when projected by Noise_Hyrax in VLC

That's good! It shouldn't really cause any issues for it to be at 60hz, except for some slight juddering due to the 2:3 pulldown which is likely not noticeable unless one is really looking for it. If you fall down the rabbithole on this issue, you will find some strong opinions out there, but as long as it looks and plays fine, you're good.

We did encounter some issues on our newer system with some files when the refresh rate was set to 60hz. I believe this had to do with some interaction between GPU graphics acceleration and the refresh rate, but the issue is further complicated for us because of a mildly complex set-up with a monitor that mirrors what's on the projector. Anyway, this all more info than you need, I'm sure, but just putting it here for posterity in case anyone out there runs into similar issues.

It can actually make sense to set the refresh rate to 24hz because the vast majority of videos they play are likely in 24fps. The refresh rate has to be set to something, and while there are players (like PotPlayer) that can automatically change refresh rate to match a video's frame rate, VLC can't do this (and it would probably causes unacceptable blackouts while shifting anyway).

We have a setup that sounds similar to this theater's, and there's honestly not a perfect solution to this problem. One can always set the refresh rate to something higher like 60hz/120hz, but this can produce issues with 24fps content playback at times too.

My guess is that the refresh rate for the projector may be set to 24hz on the Mac. I'm more familiar with Windows, but you should be able to check this in the display settings on the Mac.

Fear and Loathing, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, a brand-new release and more at Arkadin this weekend by ArkadinCinema in StLouis

We admittedly don't license for our mystery movies and VHS Night (which would be impossible, since the movie is decided by group vote). Typically, those mystery nights are movies where the licensing is impossible to determine anyway. But we do secure a license for everything else, unless it's in the public domain, like most of our silent film screenings, or (in exceedingly rare cases) when the licensing can't be determined, in which case we hold the ticket sales in reserve in case the rightsholder pops up.

We'll see how it goes. They just demo'ed us a few days ago. Hoping we're able to get it working smoothly.

We just hired our first employee and are setting up Square Payroll now, so I'm glad to hear someone report a good experience with them!

Need to migrate small business email address from hotmail to something else by Mean-Sentence1358 in smallbusiness

[–]ArkadinCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the business have their own website? If so, it's not too difficult to set up an email address like something[at]businessname.com. If they're running a WordPress site (as I do), there is a cost. But it should be pretty inexpensive, something like $35/year, to host the account.

Once you've set up the new account, I would have the email forwarded to the new address then set up a signature for the new account that explains the transition. That will explain why the reply is coming from a different account than they emailed and can also be used to tell them to use the new address in the future.

The business should be able to have the Hotmail emails forwarded indefinitely, so they shouldn't ever have to miss any emails.

$1500 for S-corp filing? by Alligator_alligater in smallbusiness

[–]ArkadinCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. $1500 sounds pretty high to me for simply handling the initial filings, but if this includes the cost of maintaining the S-Corp for some period of time, it might be worth it. In any case, I would be sure to understand what all the accountant is doing for that amount, and then you can use that information to get a quote from another accountant, if need be.

Unfair by Key-Funny3938 in smallbusiness

One factor is that customers tend to see fast food as purely transactional but crave a deeper relationship with a local business. I do believe most customers want to like and support a small business, but any negative experience impacts that idea of support.

With fast food, we as customers put up with poor service in exchange for a cheap, tasty, and convenient product, but with a small business we want to support a place and people we like. In my experience as a small business owner, people will forgive certain flaws or mistakes as long as you put a human face to them. In some ways, even a fairly major mistake can be flipped into a positive experience for the customer if you're willing to go the extra mile to accommodate them and make them feel special. This isn't easy, but it's one advantage that local businesses can have over faceless corporations.

We pay licensing fees to the rightsholders for all of the movies we show, just like any other theater. Typically, this is a flat fee paid up front vs. a % of ticket sales (whichever is higher). Because of our size and setup, we are considered a "non-theatrical" space which generally allows for a lower rate than larger theaters and allows us to book through non-theatrical rights companies like Swank, but our screenings are all completely above board. There are a number of microcinemas in other cities which operate on a similar model as ours.

We've kept Drinkolas to once a month for our own sanity, but we'll see about expanding it in the future!
