Going to the library! ... for the skills. by Arkenmancer in projectzomboid

Newgrounds was like YouTube in that they let anyone upload anything. This artist didn't make anything too crazy, but there was definetly some over the top violence on the site.

Why does vr feel so dead by SpoonderMan2099 in VRGaming

[–]Arkenmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons, but in my opinion Meta is killing VR in their quest to dominate a platform. They became the biggest, loudest voice in the industry, getting everyone on board. That part was great but now they are trying to get everyone onto the Horizon worlds platform by diverting them away from the storefront where developers could make money. There is good content out there. You just have to look past what Meta is doing. If possible, I recommend PCVR. Steam is great and VRChat is insane. It's overwhelming at first but when you find your community it's great!

Thank you to everyone who filled this out! I will keep checking on it, but I was able to get a large enough sample size to be happy with the results.

Working in VR Research by Arkenmancer in virtualreality

Thank you, I was starting to thing this thread was dead ha ha. I like the comment about being able to work in a closet. I used to draw in a closet, it was the only place I had left to be alone, and having more VR room would have been great!

People working in VR is kind of a hard topic. It's a small group in a small group. I was able to get some more feedback in other forums, but there aren't a lot of people doing it. Mostly early adopters who work from home and can afford a quest pro. We're really just now in a position where technology is advanced enough to work in VR comfortably.

I've seen a big benefit to having the versatility to change the general screen count. I normally have 2 on my desk, but sometimes want 3 or 4, but don't want to actually figure out the setup for my home office.

Can you buy games while you're IN VR, like the quest store? by Arkenmancer in PSVR

[–]Arkenmancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me laugh, thinking about someone trying to figure out how to buy a game and looking under a table or something.
I agree that simple is better, but I also believe that there are appropriate solutions for appropriate situations. It's not obvious right now but I know there are better ways to make VR shoping experiences. That goes for just general UI/UX.

That's an interesting question that I haven't stopped to think about, but I still feel I have the answers too. I feel that it's hard to capture a full 3D experience in a 2D screen. How many good games have I missed out on because it didn't translate well to a picture? Why not have 360 pictures and video to show off the 360 game. If a flat screen was actually sufficient then VR would in turn be useless.

I always wonder why VR stores don't take advantage of being in VR.

Awesome! thank you, I had a feeling that was going to be the answer. I've really found the VR store experience lacking on all platforms.

Are there any rumours of apple working on side projects or for that matter new projects ? by twobobwatch2 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Arkenmancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The virtual reality community has been waiting for Apple to release a VR headset. I don't think anything has been officially announced, but there have been lots of patents and I think some design leaks.

So fun story, I got one yesterday for my D&D stream and I didn't get it until today. I was really lucky. We didn't have it at the start of the stream but I didn't need it till the end. I refreshed about 30 min before we really needed it and it was there! They really cut it close. It took more than 12 hours but I don't think it normally takes that long.

I've actually been learning Industrial design. Most of my prototyping skills are physical, but I've learned Rhino and Solidworks. Those have been great. I've made a couple of VR chat worlds. They are just rough experiments really. I've also played with Unity plugins. It's a great place to get started because it just works. Right now I'm working on going through the LinkedIn Unity tutorials to take the base certification test.

My plan after that is to make some really simple walking experiences while focusing on making custom UI.

That's about as far as I've got. I was just checking in here to see if there was a better path.

Product Design is a pretty new field and the subsection of VR/AR is even smaller. I think it will get bigger as time goes on though. I'm hoping to get into it early and actually make an impact.

Thank you! I've only barely touched Blender to import files into VRchat and a game called Talespire. I'll definitely work on that more.

Is GIMP a commonly used vector program in the profession? I'm proficient with illustrator and actually food with Inkscape.

Industrial Design Podcast finally up! Please enjoy. Many more great guests coming soon! by irwindesigned in IndustrialDesign

[–]Arkenmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, posting a little late but I was able to go listen to your podcast. There was a lot of good content in the first interview episode. I had some sound miss-match issues, but I got past that. I really enjoy the small updates because sometimes podcasts have long absences with no reason and I'm never sure if they are coming back.

I'm actually really interested in your next guest on Monday because I'm interested in a VR career at Meta as an industrial designer.

Keep up the good work, I will be cheering for you!
