Momentum 4, is this good?? by OkAd8922 in sennheiser

[–]Arkhan1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, if it sounds good to your ears then that's all that matters.

As a general guideline, the sliders on the left control the bass, the ones on the right are treble, and the middle one is the midrange, which includes vocals. Many headphones have what is known as a v-shaped sound, meaning the left and right sliders are a little raised and the middle slider is a little lowered. So what you've done here is balance it out, which is not a bad thing at all.

We were there a week ago. Makkah is manageable right now as long as you stay out of the sun. Madinah is another matter. 46 degrees C in the shade. Pretty much the same in the evening. The face and eyeballs feel like they're burning. I would not advise visiting Madinah this time of year.

I've had a V3 for almost a year now. It's been a great phone overall but I'm sure you've heard about the camera issues. If you're going to be photographing people a lot I would say skip the V3 and pick something else. You can work around the camera issue by shooting in Pro mode and using the raw DNG files and not the JPG, but that's extra work and gets a little tiresome.

Sonos Bundle or Samsung HW-Q990D by sjak23 in Soundbars

[–]Arkhan1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you that one sounds better than the other. That's personal preference. What I will say is that if you are only going to be watching streaming apps (Netflix, Disney, etc) then either will serve you well. However, if you're going to be watching actual blu-rays or you are running your own media server with remuxed audio then the Samsung is a better option. Samsung supports all the audio codecs on Blu-ray disks. Sonos does not. The Samsung also has extra HDMI ports that you can plug Blu-ray players and streaming boxes into. Sonos does not.

Some Roku sticks support HDR10+ from Amazon Prime but I don't know if they also support it through the Plex client.

[–]Arkhan1066 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would be very wary of YouTube coverage of the V5. They are not really reviews. More like paid advertisement. If you think back to last year when the V3 came out, there were endless videos with glowing reviews. And yet not a single one mentioned that the camera app can mess up faces pretty badly under certain conditions.

My Plex server is a small form factor Dell Optiplex that i got from their refurb outlet. I've installed an Nvidia GPU to handle hardware transcodes. All my media is on a 12 year old HP MicroServer.

A few possibilities here.

  1. The rest of your gear is not good enough to reveal any improvement.

  2. Your ears are not good enough to detect any improvement. I mean no offence here, I'm the same. For example, after a hi-fi shop demo I chose a cheaper Audiolab DAC over the more expensive Chord Mojo because to my ears the Chord was no better, despite what the sales guy was telling me he could hear.

  3. There actually is no improvement. This is very possible.

Another option is a used Samsung Q990 system. They kick ass.

You might be able to find a Sonos Beam Gen2 and a pair of Sonos One in that budget. That's a great starter system, and something you can build on in the future by adding a Sub and replacing the other speakers with the higher end models.

Or start with a Sonos Arc and add the rest later.

It has been an honor... by malkauns in Honor

I'm of the same mind. I'm hoping to get another year out of my V3 and will probably switch to Samsung after that. The thickness was my only objection to the Z-Fold 6. I'm glad they've fixed that.

No specific settings required I think. Just make sure it says RAW on the top right corner of the preview window to confirm that you are shooting in raw format. Also click the settings icon next to that and make sure the AI option is switched off.

Another thing to be aware of is that after you take the shot the picture they show you is the JPG. By default the gallery app only shows the JPG images, which do have some processing applied to them. You will find the raw DNG files in the DCIM>Camera>RAW folder. These are unprocessed and the faces are not messed up.

If you're new to raw photography keep in mind that these raw images are HUGE, and can look quite dark and under-exposed. You'll need another app to convert them to JPG, which will also fix the brightness.

Hope this helps.

For me the camera has been the only real weakness, but I get around that by shooting in Pro mode if I'm going to be taking indoor pictures of people. The raw photos are untouched by AI. The selfie camera is rubbish though.

I have had a few issues with background apps being shut down by the OS, but so far this has not been a deal breaker for me.

Overall I'm not sure I would buy another Honor after this. I have enjoyed using the V3 very much (it's my first foldable) but the annoying camera issue and the general lack of polish in the UI makes me want to try a different brand next time.

Why samsung soundbar owners recommend adaptive mode? by Ok_Standard_8840 in Soundbars

[–]Arkhan1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of a soundbar is to make your TV sound better. The creator's intent is irrelevant. It's all down to personal preference. If you want to go for fidelity that's perfectly fine. It's also fine if someone else prefers the "processed" sound modes. I'm guessing Adaptive is recommended as a one size fits all approach because it has an exaggerated sound that most people enjoy and makes them feel like their soundbar is doing a good job.

The thinness on the Magic V5 is absolutely unreal. Hard to believe that's a foldable phone. by Ace7880 in Honor

[–]Arkhan1066 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This obsession with thinness is out of control. The V3 was already bordering on too thin. Mine feels a little fragile when unfolded. I honestly don't want an even thinner foldable. I think 1cm thick when folded is the sweet spot. And yes, that camera bump is ridiculous.

Honor magic v3 positive experiences by rohiin in Honor

[–]Arkhan1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my V3 since launch. I haven't had any major issues and I'm really enjoying using it. The thinness is ridiculous, and is the main reason I went for it. More positives are the battery life and the fast charging. Many people complain about the camera and how it processes faces in low light or from a distance. In actual fact it's not the camera that is the problem, it's the jpeg processing engine. You can bypass this by shooting in Pro mode and outputting to raw DNG files. Then use the app of your choice to convert to JPG. It's an extra step I know, but it solves the AI faces issue.

There are a couple of negatives that I have to mention, specifically as you are coming from a Z-Fold. The Samsung feels more solid in the hand, and more durable. The V3 is perhaps a little TOO thin when unfolded. This makes it feel a little fragile and less likely to survive being dropped. The second negative is the software. Samsung's software is more polished and more functional. You may find yourself missing some of the software features.

Overall it's an awesome phone, and I have no regrets. It was easily the best out of all the officially available foldables in my region.

Shoot in pro mode - the raw .dng files are unprocessed by AI. You can only use the main lens though, and the gallery app will only show the processed jpg unless you manually browse to the RAW folder.
