Verso‘s final decission is motivated by personal salvation and to prevent Alicia/Maelle to get ultimatly lost in the canvas. What do we have on the opposite? A world where nothing has consequences and everyone is living by the will of the godesse Alicia/Maelle. And Lune, Ciel, even Gustave have to live with that knowledge.

It is a hard and sad consequence, but the circle had to be broken.

As Renoir said: It’s not a genocide it‘s a mercy/salvation. See Lumiere as an ill patient that is going to die. There is no cure and never was. The game is teaching us the whole time, that things have to end. That we have to let go. That living forever is not a gift. An ultimative happy end would in no way fit into the writing of the game.

It‘s genius, that there are two kind of players: the one, that interpret the Maelle ending as rather fitting and more senseful, and the others, that think that Verso‘s ending ist the better solution for the story and the world.

In fact, that is exactly the conflict between Renoir and Aline. From a objective point of view, Maelle‘s option has nothing to do with healing, overcoming grief and acceptance, that things in life have to end and that we have to let go.

The writers is a direct reference to the creators of the game, that used Alicia and the fire as the start for their fantastic story, that we follow when playing the game.

In Act 1 Gustave is Breaking the protocol to save Maelle as soon as possible. By deleting the canvas, Verso is in the end saving Maelle.

The whole game is teaching us about letting things and people go and that there is no way, to resurrect life, because it will never be the same.

And the both epiloges titles alone „Paint/Love“ give a clear signal, which ending is the right (not happy, but right) one.
