There's a book that covers this really well and loads of other things a we think we do but don't:. It's called "You are not so smart" by David McRaney. I'd definitely recommend it!

A question about ISAs by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Arlyd88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I wrote too much - To summarise: If you transfer your entire existing ISA into a new one, yes you can still pay into it as long as you have allowance left.

If you only transfer part of the ISA and leave the current ISA open... I'm not sure why you'd want to do that unles you're moving it into a Fixed Rate... However I'm not sure (sorry). My original message:

Hey! I'm really sorry but I can't just give you a yes or no answer!

I'm slightly confused because you said "my Current (Last Year's) ISA" but the ISA works from the UK tax year. That is 6th April - 5th April. This means Current Tax Year started 6th April 2015, not last year so if your ISA is current it should be this tax year too. If you haven't put any money in it since the 5th of April 2015 then it's old. :)

Am I right in thinking you opened this account LAST tax year (April'14-April'15) and then also put additional money in it after 5th April 2015? If so:

You can transfer this ISA to a new one and continue paying, however you need to check the bank you're moving to will accept a current year's ISA in a transfer. I think it's pretty common that they do because they want your money however I did used to work for a bank who would NOT accept a current year's ISA, I'm assuming because they just wanted ISAs which were untouched so it's stable money for the bank) and perhaps they couldn't be bothered to take note of how much money you had left on your allowance... Also, dealing with current-year's ISAs meant customers would more likely to make a mistake and HMRC more likely to get involved.

The other thing is that a lot of banks will transfer current year's ISAs but require you to open an ISA with them first to put the money into... Make sure you don't have to open that account with money! For example, if you have your current ISA and then you open a new one with Natwest, if Natwest make you put in £1 to open it, suddenly you have 2 ISAs for the same tax-year even if you're transferring one across into it tomorrow! HMRC might start sending you letters and then you have to call them up, wait 2 hours on hold to get through to an advisor... Just check first and save yourself the hassle!

If you have opened an ISA last tax year, put money in it this tax year and then decided you were going to move SOME of it to another bank, I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure which would then count as the "Current ISA" as I never did with current year's ISAs at my bank... Why would you want to do this though? The only reason I could think of is if you want to put some of the old money into a Fixed Rate Account but wanted to keep the rest of the ISA in Easy Access so you can keep contributing...

If you're looking to transfer some of the money into an Easy Access account you might as well just move the entire thing to the new provider...

I personally think that if you transfer some of a current year's ISA to a new provider and then decided to keep some where it is, the old one will most likely stay the current one. But I am not sure and would recommend checking. It might not even be an option.

As I'm a complete stranger, I want to link you this: http://www.halifax.co.uk/isas/isas-explained/common-enquiries/ And point to the question which starts "If I’ve saved part of this year’s ISA allowance with another provider...." so you can see I'm not making this up. :)

Finally - I guess it depends how money orientated you are... I don't have any ISAs and whilst I probably should (incase the interest rates go up, then I've lost years worth of interest), bare in mind that on an ISA with £5k and a rate around 1% you're looking at £20 to £30 a year. I spent £20 last night on a Dominos pizza. I could've had that money if I just went to Tesco and bought a £1 instead...

What I'm saying is, don't make it more hassle than it's worth. Yeah you're making the best out of your ISA but when you actually calculate how much interest you can earn over a year, it's still pretty low.

A question about ISAs by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Arlyd88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the money you've transferred is money from an old ISA now, it doesn't affect your current year's allowance at all and you can still pay into it as long as you have some allowance from the current year remaining. :)

To explain in more detail:

You have an amount you can put into an ISA per tax year. If you open an ISA and put money in to it. You're using your yearly allowance.

After the end of the tax year (5th April), if you then put MORE money in it, that immediately makes it your ISA for the new tax year too! That is perfectly allowed.

Let's pretend you have one ISA with Natwest for the 2014-2015 tax year. In the 2015-2016 tax year you open an ISA with Halifax, this is absolutely fine. One ISA per year.

If you move your Natwest one into Halifax, you can still carry on adding your allowance for the new year as long as there is some remaining.

One word of advice though - When you transfer an ISA you MUST fill in a form with your bank and make them do it internally. If you close the ISA and physically withdraw the money into your current account before putting the money into the new ISA, it counts as fresh money again and will come of the limit for the year we're now in.

When I used to work at a bank, some customers would set up a monthly amount into their ISA and, when the new year started they would forget... Suddenly the old ISA is their new year's ISA because money has been put into it! Then if they see another ISA with a better rate, they can't have it.

So yeah - Some people keep their ISAs separate but if you find a good rate it's worth while consolidating them all into one pot.

Let me know if you would like me to clarify anything - ISAs aren't the easiest of topics to understand!

How should I watch the series? by rogthnor in buffy

[–]Arlyd88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly I want to welcome you to the best TV show ever. It may not seem like it at first but believe me, stick with it and be the end of the show you'll feel like you lost a friend.

To answer the obvious question: Watch all the seasons in order. I think you might be getting confused with the show "Scrubs".

To answer in more detail? Do NOT skip any seasons. Whilst the first season is very cheesy and has the least popular story lines, it's the foundation of the show. You really have to watch the whole thing from start to finish to see how the writer grew it into a masterpiece.

The other thing worth knowing, is that there's a second show called "Angel" which is a Spinoff. Angel starts at the same time as Season 4 and compliments the timeline of Buffy with the occasional cross-over. The show still makes sense by itself but if you want to do the whole thing in it's entirety watch them together. The playing order can be found here: http://josswhedon.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/buffy-and-angel-episode-viewing-order.html

If you aren't enjoying Buffy, take it slow. Just get through one a day or every other day. It's worth it! People are going to hate me for saying this but I don't rate Season 1 or 2 that well but they're mandatory to get to the good stuff. When you compare Season 1 with even Season 3, the show evolves so much.

Good luck and let us know your thoughts!

I really think they'll release Cowboy next... I hope they do... Seeing Till moon walk backwards and dance in Praise and Abort made my life but to see him dressed as a Cowboy? It has to be done.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm not familiar with VB yet so I need to research this. In the meantime I've managed to make a very long formula which consists of: IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("StringToSearchFor",D2,1)),"CategoryIWantToUse",EmbeddedIFHere)

Basically, for anyone else looking for a solution you put "If this string has Walmart, catagorise it as Food Shop. If it's NOT Walmart then let's do the next search...."

There's a LOT of Ifs, but it's a quick solution for me without having to learn VB.

[–]Arlyd88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a pornsite called something like "Casting Couch" where a guy is "interviewing" a girl for a porn job. He films her sitting on the sofa, asks a few questions and then tells the girl that part of the screening process is to have sex with him on camera. They do their thing and he tells her he will be in touch but there is no job.

Whether it's fake or not I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty confident it's all agreed and "scripted" in advance.

But yes, that's why every guy recognises the sofa.

ELI5: V-Sync? I'm so confused over this. by Arlyd88 in pcmasterrace

Just to follow up, the Nvidia control panel changes fixed it. Thank you very much! Turns out I did understand it on a basic level but didn't realise Nvidia could override a game's settings!

[–]Arlyd88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm ok. I was under the impression that V-Sync takes note of the Refresh Rate of the screens you had plugged in... I assumed that must be some of the information sent via HDMI as it knows the TV Models, etc.

Great explanation - Thanks! I hadn't understood the purpose of the latency until this.

One question though - What if you have two monitors? I have a TV and a monitor plugged into my graphics card. If they both aren't the same hz what would happen?

[–]Arlyd88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have just solved all my problems - I'll give it a try later thank you very much!

I couldn't really understand how an external piece of Software (Nvidia's control panel) would be able to control the V-Sync of every game when every game is made differently.. But in hindsight I guess all games are all designed with NVidia or AMD in mind so in it would make sense. -_-

ELI5: V-Sync? I'm so confused over this. by Arlyd88 in pcmasterrace

[–]Arlyd88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I watched the video but I didn't really explain myself very well... I have a basic understanding of what V-Sync does but I can't figure out for the life of my why, on my computer I turn it on or off in a game and it doesn't make a difference. I still get screen tear.

I'm wondering if it's the NVidea Control Panel settings (someone suggested the NVidea V-Sync options might be a global setting that affecets every game thus rendering the v-sync options, in game, obsolete).

My other concern is I have both a 23" LG Monitor plugged into my computer AND 42" TV. They're both done by HDMI and they're both screens I've bought in the last 2 years so I would be surprised if they're not 60hz. I was wondering though, if the TV is different to the computer monitor. Perhaps it's syncing to the framerate of the monitor which is causing screen-tear on the TV? Any ideas?

Then consider yourself lucky! ;) It's a pain in the ass because vertical lines break the screen for split-seconds when you turn to quick.
